Hello. Not sure if I missed it, or it wasn't really stated, but refuse management is important in the butchering industry. If you do not have a large enough refuse pile then miasma can occur if the butcher shop is inside. If you have a cat/dog-splosion and try to butcher 30 in a row you'll find out that you run out of refuse space very fast. Stop orders with managers can help greatly here. For example ( if shells > 20 then { decorate with shell } ) or if bones > 20 make bone arrows can keep these things from building up automatically, and also keep you from running out incase a strange mood needs one. Also, put all but one male animals of each species in a cage. Female animals need to be out to breed, but you only need one male to do the job. The rest will just eat FPS and risk getting killed.

I didn't know animals inside cages don't starve, as the video stated, thats very handy to know! I will be utilizing your recommendation of storing all but one of the male animals I have- *with maybe exception to sheep.* I'm doing a cloth/farming industry. :)

I did a bit of a mistake there - grazing animals still need food in the cages. Your animal dwarves will feed them though

You can keep the space required for pastures down by increasing the grazing coefficient in the options menu. I always do that just so I don’t have to worry about whether or not surface animals are starving-they’re already getting murdered regularly in sieges and such on the regular-so they might as well die full and happy.

I do believe animals that graze still need to graze in cages. I have had animals starve in cages. Now the non-grazers are fine, and it helps with fort FPS to keep them in cages. I stuff all the babies in cages until they mature and get trained into war animals or butchered.

Did some info digging and seems like you are right! Grazers need to be fed while in cages, that's something I overlooked when making this video, thanks for correcting!

@@Ic0nGaming Set some dwarves to work on feeding caged animals in the the orderlies tab if that's the route you want to take.

So that's why they haven't been making soap. How do I find out if I have a vampire? Someone said "The dwarves that have been missing for a week will have blood loss." But I've not figured out where to start past that.

If a dwarf is found drained of blood you definitely have a vampire. You'll need a sheriff/Captain of the guard to unlock the Justice tab in order to charge a suspect with the crime.

Some other quick advice is that Vampires (and werebeasts) will often be "Previous Members" of many other locations, as they often get ousted upon discovery. So if someone has a rap sheet a mile long, it's an indicator

Can you automate placing young in cages and letting them out? I assume that's a no with the current game.

Automation for Animal Industry is basically not implemented, no. I really hope that the mods which are available for the classic version will hit the Workshop soon. But before this happens, it's sadly all manual.

even if you put the male bird in a walled in room it will still fertilize the eggs - but you can use fertilized eggs to cook so its ok. If you want to cook the eggs you can allow them in stockpile and they will not hatch once moved out from the nest box
