The doctrine of justification by faith alone addresses this critical question: What must we do to be saved? During the Protestant Reformation, this question prompted heated theological controversy, and it remains an important question for us to study today. In this message, R.C. Sproul looks at the doctrine that Martin Luther upheld as the article by which the church stands or falls.

I wholehearted agreed with Martin Luther on the doctrine of justification by faith alone. God the Father is just and he deals justly in dispensing justice to the unjust. But God the Father declares the the unjust as justified through showing grace to those who put their faith in his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

I love how RC focuses on the positive affirmation of being in Christ, rather than the fire and brimstone condemnation of our life here in the flesh route some take. Scripture warns us of the consequences of sin but tells us to focus on "that which is good" which is the Word of God and God Himself.

I've been Prot. my whole life, and to this day still go to a baptist church. But its funny I never read the Bible from beginning to end. And as I do so it becomes clear to me that Protstants are wrong, as is this gentleman, with respect. Infusion, baptism and penance seem more biblical to me than imputation and faith alone. I like the idea of penance. The Bible seems more real to me with that understanding. Faith alone and imputation has become empty to me as I actually read the Bible myself and get older and wiser. The Prot. Church feels more empty to me, as all the sermons increasingly do from week to week.

The whole thing then hinges on what is meant by the term faith. Is faith merely a one time moment of a feeling or declaration of trust? It would seem that it must be more substantial than that since we would expect more from our friends, children, or anyone else than simply words to show that they trust us or believe our willingness and ability to help them; how much more then for God who puts us to the test, and says plainly, "show me your faith without works, and i will demonstrate my faith by my works."

Christ is the author and finisher of our Faith. Everything we need to live godly in Christ, comes from Him when He lifts us out of the Dunghill. Thus saith the LORD... Knowing that a man is NOT justified by the works of the law, but by the Faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the FAITH of Christ, and NOT by the WORKS of the law: for by the works of the law shall NO FLESH BE JUSTIFIED. Then they said unto Him (Jesus), What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent. ...for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their works, just as God did from His.

@@TheBibleSays Your are correct but your understanding is off. When you are born again, you WANT to do good works. Jesus becomes your EVERYTHING. Good works manifest from salvation. It's not "ok, now that I've accepted Jesus as my Lord and savior, I hope I do enough good to finish the job". Jesus said "it is finished". Faith without works is dead because if you profess to be saved and haven't changed, then that person is lying to themselves. Otherwise, what would happen to a person who lived a life of sin and put their faith in Jesus as an old man? Why should he bother since he won't live long enough to do enough good to make up for it all plus earn his salvation? You and Mr Sproul are Both correct. The problem lies in a complete understanding. I have a good example for you: After I was saved, one day I found a wallet with money in it. Before I was saved, I probably would have just taken the money and tossed the wallet. Instead, I tracked down the owner and returned it all. That 'good work' was a manifestation of my salvation. Although it wasn't required to return it for salvation, if I had kept it, my actions would have been a manifestation of me NOT being saved. Faith and works DO go hand in hand, however; good works come from being saved. They aren't put on a score card to see if I've done enough to be saved. Hope this helped. (Sometimes I'm not very good at trying to explain my point). Many blessings my friend.

This is the beginning of your "faith" walk. As you hit these places in your Christian life turn to what the Lord says: "There is NOW no condemnation to those that are in Christ Jesus". "I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more". "As far is the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us". "For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more". When you get down because of something, remember you are HIS workmanship, not yours and He will work on us until He brings us Home. Trust Him. 🥰

This video made things 'click' for me, Jesus said "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing" Read it up John 15:5... How does a branch receive fruit to bear? It is by the vine! How does a branch get saved? If its connected to the Vine. As long as you stay in the vine, as a branch, you have nothing to worry about. If you worry about bearing no fruit as you don't want to get cut off from the branch. Don't worry. The Vine you are connected to will bring the fruit through you.. And remember, you can always ask Jesus for help.

I'm sure some will disagree with me, but it seems Rome redefines terms, as well as plucking scriptures out of context and building entire doctrines on them. It's ultimately salvation by works. Grace infused works, yes, but work nonetheless. I know, I know. "But James says..." James tells us that faith apart from works is dead. Meaning, saying "I believe in Jesus" does not necessarily mean you have a saving faith. James is not addressing people with saving faith that aren't doing works; James is addressing people with a nominal faith, and since their faith is nominal, they are unable to do good works. Saving faith is accompanied by the Holy Spirit and *will produce works (1 John 3:9; Ezekiel 36; ); the nominal faith that James describes is the same kind of faith he likens to that of demons -- it is not submission to Christ but mere intellectual assent. "The demons believe God is one -- and tremble." People who believe theological truths *about* God but are not submitting themselves to God in repentance. True faith brings justification; true faith is accompanied by the Holy Spirit, and will produce good works (Ezekiel 36, 1 John 3:9)

Is a person saved by "faith alone" as is used in the modern climate? No! Is a person saved by faith? Yes. Similarly, a believer is also saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8), by the gospel (I Corinthians 15:1-2), by baptism (I Peter 3:21; Titus 3:5), by enduring (Matthew 10:22), and by Jesus' blood (Romans 5:9).

You see then that a man is JUSTIFIED by Works/Deeds and not by Faith only? Likewise, was not RAHAB, the Harlot was she JUSTIFIED by her Works/Deeds when she received the messengers and send them out in another way? For as the Body without the Spirit is Dead, so Faith without Works/Deeds is Dead also." 22. John 5:29... Revelation 22:12... "Behold, I am coming quickly, and MY (Christ) Rewards is with ME (Christ) to give to every one according to his/her WORKS/DEEDS/ACTS." In Conclusion... The two words, "declaration" and "infusion," trigger the intense spiritual battle that continues from the time of The Fall to the present. Looking at the lives of God's chosen people from Seth to Paul we find nothing but sinners who have been declared by God the Father to be righteous because God the Holy Spirit gave them faith to believe in the work of God the Son. The evidence from the Word of God, the Scriptures do not show any "infusion of God's grace." When a group of believers, therefore, get together to hear a preacher, and that preacher proclaims the "church religious system" instead of The Gospel of Christ's righteousness alone for salvation,", it is no longer for that time, the "church."

Romans 5:19 says that through Christ we are made righteous, NOT declared as righteous as understood by the Reformers (that is, we are NOT made righteous but legally declared as righteous). Being made righteous implies infusion. Gen. 15:6 says that Abraham believed in God and it (his belief) was counted to him for righteousness. However in Psalms 106:31 what is counted (the same Hebrew word as in Gen. 15:6) for righteousness to Phinehas is NOT faith or belief, but what he did. Scripture says in 1 John 3:7 that he who does what is right is righteous. Why being made righteous is essential? Scripture says it is righteousness that delivers from death (Prov. 10:2) and the righteous shall go to eternal life (Mat. 25:46). Our ability to have faith and to do what is right (that makes us righteous) comes from and is only possible by grace through Christ - apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). From Scripture we know that we lose our righteousness through sinning in Ezekiel 33:12: "the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins". That is the reason why our sins need to be washed away or forgiven. Contrary to what Sproul said in the video, the existence of deadly (mortal) and non-deadly (venial) sins can be found in the Bible (1 John 5:16-17). Scripture denies (double) imputation in Ezekiel 18;20: "the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself."

@@Wgaither1 If you follow imputation concept of the Reformers, scriptural distinction between deadly/mortal and non-deadly/venial sins become meaningless as all your sins (past, present and future) are counted on Christ who bore them on the cross. Thus in his letter to Phillip Melanchthon on 1 August 1521, Luther boldly wrote: "No sin will separate us from the Lamb, even though we commit fornication and murder a thousand times a day." (source: Luther's Works, Vol. 48, page 282).

@@rockycomet4587 there is plenty of untruth too, like Santa Claus & flying reindeer, the invention of "Easter" in place of the Biblical date of Passover, the day upon which Yeshua died, the changing of Yeshua's Holy Name meaning "salvation" given by the Angel of the LORD into the transmogrified "Jesus," the replacement of the commanded Sabbath of the LORD with the observance of "Sun"-day with no command from God, Yeshua or the apostles to do so etc. Indocrinated with tonnes of UNTRUTH, and the opposite of truth is a LIE, and we know where ALL LIARS end up! Great religion with too many anomalies to make it credible or tolerable. 🙃

@@HearGodsWord He's right in the minds of those all indoctrinated by his teaching, and all others outside of that equation don't care whether he's right or wrong as they are not brainwashed by the repetition of Biblical stories, principles, rules, laws, theories & beliefs. 🙃
