Looks and sounds like standard flatpicking to me, some cross picking (down, up) I'm always way impressed with his Travis picking like on " they killed John Henry" or " Harlem River Blues". Its something I've had to practice and practice at and im only just now " so so" at it. For him it seems effortless. Check out " Dirty Rag" it's track 5 from Midnight at the Movies. It'll blow your mind

He definitely had a habit at starting at one tempo and ending at a slower one esp. when he didn't have a rhythm section to support him - YET - he was the best most communicative performer I ever had the pleasure of hearing live, so, in the end, it really didn't matter.
