1999-2007 are the best years of women’s tennis for me. Great variety and fierce competitors which are absent in today’s field. We have serena, venus, davenport, kim, henin, capriati, mauresmo, hingis, sharapova, kuznetsova, myskina, dementieva, pierce, and seles. One slam wonders were rare during those years. Now one slam wonders are everywhere like stosur, schiavonne, ostapenko, sloane stephens, wozniacki, bartoli, ivanovic, and andreescu.
@ProudTarjaholic3 жыл бұрын
I acknowledge what you're trying to say, but you swap names as you please, or so it seems... I mean, among the so called "multiple Slam winners", you call Myskina? She won 1 Slam and other than that never made it passed the quarterfinals. Dementieva? 2 finals lost. Meanwhile, you call Wozniacki (1 Slam, 2 finals lost) and Bartoli (1 Slam, 1 final lost) among the "one Slam wonders"? What is that all about?

I always see comments about Henin and Hingis, but to me they don't have a lot in common. Yes, they both share finesse, and a lighter frame, but overall Justine was a much more agressive player, hence her success in the power era. Justine's game could be smart and delicate, but she was a phenomenal athlete as well.

@pomerlain89242 жыл бұрын
@@victorlupas4875 It's a mess. When we see just about every draw fall apart at a GS, it's a mess. The top 10 is like musical chairs. Players today don't have the the consistency of players from 15-20 years ago. The current world #2, Anett Kontaveit has one GS QF to her name. Maria Sakkari is ranked #3 and has one International-level title to her name. In 2003 alone, Clijsters and Henin met 8 times, with 6 of those meetings coming in finals. In today's WTA, it'd be miracle if top players played each half as many times in a two year period because they lose so early at events.

A lot of henins shots seemed to land mid court giving the opponent an opportunity to put the ball away and I wondered if its coz of her height compared to a much taller davenport who was always able to hit right down the line on almost any shot

Davenport? Henin was miles superior to Lindsay in clay court tennis. I think the depth of Henin's shots was very good throughout the match and that is more important than hitting the corners.

@jkj92247 жыл бұрын
wow, Kim looks like henin's hitting partner here, not a grandslam finalist. At that time, Kim was not as much powerful as Williams' sister (even jennifer) and not as much tactical as henin. She was just good moving player(like split). She has changed a lot when she cameback in 2009.(espeacially backhand side and return ability)
@justineandserena7 жыл бұрын
Ms lee yea that is true about Kim but at Wimbledon shortly after this she nearly beat venus but choked it away. And she also choked in the Aussie open semi to Serena nearly beating her So Kim defiently had power them just not much tactic an finishing ability

Ms lee it’s nuts how henin gave Kim a bagel 6-0 in set 2 an henin was not even at the peak of her powers .. an Kim being such a great baseline and retriever could not offer more resistance
@justineandserena6 жыл бұрын
Ms lee not necessarily true Kim still had more power then henin an beat her earlier in the year ... Justine just became more aggressive an Amped up her play an found ways to beat Kim... henin won the next 4-5 battles Kim got a win over a injured henin in 2005 Rogers cup final Then in 2010 in three very see saw tight matches

She didn't hit the ball as flat Davenport, Capriati, and Williamses, but she had plenty of power and was definitely capable of hitting a lot of winners from the back of the Court. The problem was she was wildly inconsistent and streaky, off the forehand side in particular as seen in this match where she made a boatload of Errors off that side.

Kim would play much different if she won that 2001 final which she should win. Her problem at this moment was mentality. Something changed in 2005 but only after she bulked up a bit and her shots sharpened. 2009+ Kim would prevent Serena from reaching 15 slams if she existed whole career.
@MrJupiterjazz7 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of her winning slams had to deal with the fact that she didn't have to take out top tier players in finals. It is so much easier to beat a top player outside of a final. But at the same time, it goes to show how mentally frail a lot of the women on the tour are.
@aaronclark2767 жыл бұрын
Welp, she didn't. But since you wanna play "what if" Serena would have dragged her in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 so...#23
@5561_DollaDollaBills6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure Kim would've prevented Serena from her domination considering Kim's poor record against Serena. The only players that have had an effect on Serena are Henin, Hingis, and Capriati. Now, I do agree that had Henin played longer, she & Serena would have had a great rivalry. Clijsters never quite had the "it" factor against the best of the best.

@@regulusarcturus I don't know Hingis very well but I'm Belgian so I have picked up many stories about Henin over the years. She may have been disliked (I don't know if that's true) but unjustly so. In Flemish media she was also often depicted as a cold and kind of bitchy person whereas Kim was always smiling and sunny and everybody loved her. But during the 2004 Olympics there were plenty of (Flemish) athletes that met her in the Olympic village and who were pleasantly surprised and who said Henin was nothing like her image in the media and that she was actually very nice and even funny. She simply is (was?) an introverted person that has difficulties opening up to people and liked to stay in her own private bubble when on the Tour. People tend to read into that the wrong way. When I used to see her on Belgian television for instance (mainly after her career) she always gave me the impression of being a rather calm and pleasant, bright woman.
