Last year I joined the group that plays in our church. Though not the type of music that motivated me to pick up the guitar, the experience was tremendous. I learned stuff I would have never learned practicing on my own. Keeping time with the group, reading charts, identifying new chord voices, playing as an ensemble player, getting over the anxiety of playing in front of others, etc. At best, practicing/learning on my own allowed me to develop tools. Playing with others let me see how the tools were used within context.

Jamming with someone else is definitely the best, but I think a looper pedal is a great way to guit some practice in even if you just want to prepare to jam with someone else. It's great too because you have to learn both parts and can't just default to whatever you're more comfortable with/enjoy more.

This has been one of my biggest struggles. I’m 39 and everyone learning guitar seems to be a teenager or retired. Struggling to find someone in my remote corner of the world that’s interested in learning from each other without forming a band. No time for that! 😆

Playing with teenagers/younger people is a great way to learn. it’s crazy the way kids minds work and they get creative. They might realize something you’ve never thought about and you can really learn a lot from them sometimes.

Justin, this is a great video and I cannot agree more. As a complete beginner I had my second jamming session with one of my friends (also a very early beginner) at the weekend and I ended up teaching him what I was learning. Whilst he was learning I was also playing and not thinking as much about what I was doing and I ended up playing the sequence better than I do when practicing. I cannot recommend getting together with a friend enough.

Your experience speaks volumes in your suggestions! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I especially loved the section at 3:28. In my opinion, that's the main reason why most fail. Also, I'm astounded to see that you are THE ONLY one on KZbin who actually has a video about this. Just search "How to have a rock jam" and see the results.

Very nice and thoughtful of you Justin to take the time and guide youngsters through the struggles of communicating with others in order to make the connections happen. I personally was fortunate enough to not have that problem but always went out of my to try and make those kinds of people comfortable too. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦 !

While jamming in person would obviously be preferred, when I told a really good friend (who has played for about forty years) that I was trying to pick up the guitar during the pandemic, he said that we should jam. I said I wasn’t very far along, and we live too far from each other. He suggested FaceTime, and it worked pretty well for us. We jammed probably five or six nights a week for weeks. He taught me the twelve bar blues, some music theory, scales, and he brought in a couple songs to work on. We had that going for probably a month in a half, but haven’t been able to get together for at least a month now. 😩 I’m kinda surprised Justin didn’t suggest video conferencing, especially given the pandemic. Also, if you can’t think of anyone you know who plays, I bet if you post something on your social media, some of your friends will surprise you and tell you they play!

Chicago, IL USA is great for jamming. Primarily acoustic instruments jamming with sheet music holding them together. A few electric guitars with portable amps. The Old Town School of Folk Music has the Americana Jam on Wednesdays at noon. Free for the last 25 years. The OTSFM in Chicago is awesome. And of course, I am a paid subscriber to Justin Guitar videos.

I put a query out on my local commumity page to see if anyone played guitar and wanted some one to practice with. 20 odd people turned up the first night at all different levels. We ended up splitting the group to beginners and intermediate advanced. We meet on 2 seperate nights. We now have 6 regular intermediate/advanced players and 4 beginners. And my playing has improved so much We have a playlist that we work through everynight to warm up and then we work on a couple of new ones We have a couple that play the rhythm in different ways and one take the lead. I like the idea of using a capo...we havent done that yet.

I bought a Spider Jam amp years ago and now I’ve handed it over to my 13-year-old daughter who is a beginner. So it’s playing these songs recorded by session musicians, and she’s supposed to play along. I don’t know if this is too challenging for her, and I don’t want to put her off. Any suggestions about how to get started? Maybe just finding a chord that fits and play rhythms along to it?

I'm a loner and I'm usually bullied, marginalized, and ostracized in school. My family members and relatives are general people and not musicians. I'm usually trolled in forums and generally online. Looper pedal and making jam tracks on a DAW works for me better.

Teacher Justin. I'd like your opinion on somthin here on Timing-) i play "spot on' with a backing track, in a full band with drums & bassist or solo play & sing, However, i'm told my timing is off when i'm jamming with a few other guitar players without drums or bass. I hav a habit of "altering a song" e.g. A standard G&R Sweet Child O'mine to a mellow acoustic ballad. And it is here when the guirar players say i'm" too slow or too fast". Q.What/Who is the pronlem here???

Jam on my channel, learn some songs then contact a friend and ask them to come over and show them the channel, it can bridge the connection on deciding what to play and how to play it. Justin this was what I've been trying to do for years. To help get people to come together and jam. Help them learn and give them a way to stay motivated and grow as a guitar player. Thanks to you, because of your channel many years ago I have learned enough to help others in a way that I can help them. Please come visit me, maybe you can put a good word in for me. I'm not out to be a teacher - I just want to help inspire people to keep playing. To become a guitar player for life and not just to learn a riff or two.
