05:13 "Try and get in your mind a really sad event in your life". .... "Oh nobody loves me but my mama... but she might be jiving me too". Instant blues tune! I love these "fireside chat" sessions, Justin. In the past you seemed reluctant to create vids in which you were not actually playing something... but I think you have shown these "chat only" videos have real value as well. Well done, my good man! 👍 🙏 💪

Yeah, I feel like I have stopped music for way too long, but it really is a key tool in maintaining mental health for creative people, and it's helping me a great deal now. I'm currently using your grade one guitar course, and it's been a really good way to get back into things. Thank you for all you do, Justin.

This is fabulous. It's the difference between playing the notes and playing the music. I am guilty of the former and spend too much time worrying about getting it technically correct. Am working on loosening up and going with the feel. I find playing standing up and wandering around the room helps! More of this please Justin and thank you. 😉

Justin, you are spot on with your connection of how to play the notes/chords and your inner feeling. It's an emotional transition.

This was so truthful. I do this all the time. I thought I may be one of the few. But music speaks to so many of us in different way. Thanks Justin. This was very insightful.

True.. have played the trumpet and tuba over 40 years and you can hear it! Now only 5 months starting playin guitar , not being able so good to lay my personality in the songs. Hope to reach a certain level to express myself.. passing of my son.. too sad..pain and joy have many grades. Play as I am ;) Thank you for grade 3

Been with you since the old old days and Jimi Hendrix solos etc. even theory. You’re awesome… and I’m still here! As far as music, people always me, like you all here, how did you get so good or play so well and all types etc… And I always said “simple, I tied the instruments with my emotions and life… every time I was sad, I played, mad, I played, happy, I played… you’re always feeling something so you’re always practicing your ear etc.”

That was amazing! Explains why I sometimes feel so connected with certain songs and disconnected from others. This reminded me of how Glen Campbell made jimmy Webb songs "his own" because he would really feel the lyrics and i can feel it too as he plays it. Awesome stuff!

What a dude, this amazing Justin is. It's clear he's reading these comments, and responding. This lesson landed at the right time for me. I say this because I now have enough technical proficiency to begin letting the emotions show through. That was one of his points: you've got to be able to play a bit if you want to express yourself, if even imperfectly. I'm working on "Something I feel Like A Motherless Child," made popular first by Odetta, then Richie Valens at Woodstock. I'm going it at the suggestion of my teacher, and is part of a program. It's finger style, with the melody running through it. I dreamt last night about slowing it right down, almost like Cohen, rather than trying to get maximum speed out of my mind and fingers. That just makes it sound bouncy and upbeat. My lady, who is losing her mother to dementia and old age, is living and loving it. Anyway, thanks for going in this direction. For whatever reasons, the timing was great for me.

Hi Justin, it’s interesting what you say about my technique. I have a couple of friends who are both good musicians. One of them is an incredibly accomplished and technical player but to me he’s playing always sounds a bit lifeless. My other friend on the contrary is a little bit more haphazard in his playing, but plays with real joy and enthusiasm and that really communicates itself to those people who are listening. There’s a whole lot more to it then getting all the right notes in the right order. Lots to think about here, thanks.
@ivanvarykino82022 жыл бұрын
So agree with you on this. I've experienced same with various friends and acquaintances over my life. The "guitar school" graduates I've tried jamming with are the least fun and emotional players. Conversely, the self taught, unique style players have been the ones I've connected with and loved to hear play.

Food for thought is always nourishing. Funny part is that I like instrumental music better than I like music with words. Some of the strongest feelings I've experienced are just from sounds that can make me soar or feel down or a myriad other ways.

One of the best intro's in rock to me is on the live version of " doctor doctor" the quieter blues guitar playing morphs into the rock, to me at the time I'd split up with my girlfriend, after a while I found myself still sad, but didn't want to feel this way, I wanted to break out, and that's exactly what that intro is ( to me ) doing. Defiantly breaking out of the sadness, to stand tall and march on. I'd never tire of listening to it, even though the event has long gone, it reminds me again, that sad feelings don't last forever.

You almost make me happy I'm one of those perpetual intermediates who is much to old to go pro or try busking. I was learning to improvise to a slow 12 bar blues one day and turned on the voice recorder on my iPhone and just improvised to a backing track using the minor pentatonic scale. When I listened to the recording, I was surprised to hear some passages that sounded really sad, which brought back memories of my childhood. I will re-listen to that recording again and incorporate those bits into another solo sometime. Good topic. Thank you 👍

Justin, I was watching tv once (many, many years ago) and a jazz guitar player was performing, when a special guest came on the set ... a guitar player of note, I can't be sure of this, but my memory leans toward Jimi Hendrix ... I'm not sure, but it was someone famous with a very recognized sound. The jazz player hands the guest his guitar, which had been set up for the first guy to play ... the guest starts playing and lo and behold, it sounds just like the guest should. I was stunned ... how could he pick up someone else's guitar and sound like himself ... just like that. The lesson I learned was that it's not about guitars, it's not about amps, it's not about effects ... it's about touch and it's about feel.

I can relate somewhat on connecting with the music back when I played jazz piano after a drink or two(no more). Occasionally I feel like my emotions are coming out in my guitar playing, but not yet on that jazz level. Sad or melancholy songs get me there quicker such as House of RS, or Wayfaring Stranger. I love this video and will rewatch it a few times. TY

I hope the scientists never find an explanation and music remains a mystery. There's something profound about how otherwise arbitrary points of frequency can occur within set patterns of relationship to each other and that the patterns are interpreted emotionally by the brain. It's one of those deep, water-into-wine mysteries of consciousness.

A mobile/smart phone or any other device is a useful tool, but like all tools, it’s in the hands and control of the user. Empirical evidence constantly shows though that, particularly with phones, the opposite is true - the user is too often obsessively and compulsively controlled by the dynamic that it brings, especially with social media. I’m in my 60s and during the larger part (so far) of my life when we didn’t have these things, the world was still spinning each day (and many people actually got a lot more ‘real stuff’ done - like learning about music and to play an instrument). I’m aware that society and the way we communicate and connect evolves, but I’m also convinced that rather too many are being duped into a delusion of the actual importance of social media, let alone all their streaming subscriptions.
@nakiarobby39962 жыл бұрын
I think I understand because I would use my phone to practice as well and I'll go on KZbin to check how to play a song (e.g. blackbird) or how to vibrato, etc and then I might see something about a certain celebrity, etc and waste time not practicing like I'm suppose to but it is in your control you just have to be focused and discipline to reach your goals.

Even if you are not the best guitar player in the world, you really have to enjoy your music and the enjoyment will shine through. If you are only playing because you have got to, or out of some misguided sense of duty, then it will sound dull and lifeless.
