Today I'm talking about one of my favourite bands and a band that I believe should be much more successful than they are. It's Foxy Shazam. If you're not already aware of Foxy Shazam, you might recognise Eric Nally from his collaborations with Macklemore. An incredible frontman. Let's talk about what is so great about this band and why, oh why, they are not garnering the success they deserve.

The hardest part about being a Foxy fan (well over a decade for me now!) is knowing that they should actually be the biggest band in the world and headlining gigantic stadium shows but seeing them constantly unable to break through. It's heartbreaking. Their music is absolutely infectious and their live shows are just overflowing with energy. Without a doubt one of my favorite bands of all time. Buy their records, go see them live. Trust me you won't regret it.

I'd never heard or seen them until this video, and to me they sound fantastic, but it's probably a novelty element that's stopped them, Electric Six were actually a good band but the whole thing was too novelty to be anything more than 15 minutes, some people like Beck have had huge careers while having extremely eccentric songs but it's really difficult to do

Here's something fantastic though.... I believe they are exactly where they are supposed to be. There's something special about being a Foxy fan ( which I've also been for over 10 years after my buddy's band opened for them in Ohio). I really think if Eric wanted major fame, he'd be pursuing it . But he's a family man, and this is working for him. Who says crippling commercial recognition and corporate obligations are the benchmarks of success anyway? I think they are perfect. ❤

I saw Foxy Shazam live once in 2009. Small little bar in Lansing Michigan, Mac's Bar. Eric was standing with the crowd after the show because it was a bar, I tapped him on the shoulder while he was telling two sorority girls he was not going to go to their sorority house cuz he was married and had to get home. I awkwardly said "I freaking love you guys, blew my mind!" And he said in that little high voice "thank you I'm glad you liked the show" and shook my hand, and looked me dead in the eyes. Been a fan ever since.

Not true for me… I moved on to other bands like king gizzard who keep stretching the rock genre by going into so many genres. Though foxys “flamingo trigger” turned me onto a lot of screamo but it was nothing like them. They did it different. I still listen to their first two albums a lot. Damn. I Guess you’re right. Taking a somewhat long hiatus just as they were breaking due to typical band turmoil didn't help them, but they do have their die hard fans like myself. I am glad to see them back plugging away as they did previously. They've released two albums in the last 2 years so they used the plague to their advantage by writing and recording and now they are back to their road dog selves spreading the gospel as it were. An interesting note about the video you showed is they filmed it in a venue called Bobby Mackey's on the Kentucky side of the Cincinnati Metro area, which is known for it's paranormal activity so it fit well with that video. Excellent content as always Justin!

After bringing one of my best friends to see The Darkness in 2012, he recommended Foxy Shazam to me as we were walking out the venue... someone within earshot immediately joined us and urged me to listen to them ASAP and noted they had just opened on the earlier leg of the Darkness tour (the date which i missed). Long story short, i quickly became as obsessed with Foxy as i am with the Darkness. I listen to the catalogue repeatedly... and have sprung for multiple physical formats (same thing with the Darkness). i repeatedly tell everyone i know these are the best two rock bands of this century and both should be much bigger... yet another gripe i have with the world. I first saw them on the gonzo tour before the breakup. it was a great show, but gonzo took a while to grow on me... as such, i felt i hadn't really seen the band i loved... well, in February ('22) i finally got the Foxy show i was craving at a little club on Bleeker street in NYC. it literally blew me away. i have been to over 200 concerts (that i can recall and setlist.fm can prove) and that show skyrocketed into my top 5. from the opening notes to the closing chord... holy fucking shit. Foxy Shazam should be so much bigger than they are. Like the Darkness, they SHOULD be a household name. it's a fucking crime they are not. they are incredible. Justin, your contributions to their work have been great. i was delighted to see your name in the liner notes for Burn. cheers my friend. thanks for doing this video!

My two cents - they were on a sharply upwards trajectory with Church of Rock n' Roll, but the follow up album Gonzo was such a different tone and style that it failed to connect with the audience they'd just captured and it all fizzled for them. The bust up was understandable at that point, and Eric really showed his genius in his solo works and the Macklemore collaboration, but with Foxy it's a different magic and I'm glad to see it coming back. Burn was a reintroduction to the world, but of course the pandemic was in full throttle. I'm very much looking forward to The Heart Behead You and seeing where it will take them.

I knew Foxy Shazam back when I was 8 years old and I saw the crazy "The French Passion of Animality Opera" music video. They were the reason my cousin and I started a rock band with the same energy. That seems like years ago now. I'm 25 now and this band has always been an influential part of my musical life. I met all of them and almost went on tour with them. They are some of the nicest people I had ever met. My band covered all of their songs and we always tried to let people know who they were at school. They really deserve a bigger audience. But, Covid struck and most young people these days would rather listen to rap and hip hop which is why I think Foxy Shazam has not had the breakthrough they deserve. I will admit that their new music is not as good as it used to be. But, they still have talent that deserves as much attention as a band like Queen. Foxy Shazam will always have a place in my heart as the most underrated and most fun rock band of all time.

I can hear the 70's glam influence in the singing and music with a current twist. I've heard of them but have never delved into their catalog.. I'll check them out.. Thanks!

My wife introduced me to Foxy Shazam coming home from a roadtrip. I remember because it fit so well, anthemically returning to our home after a successful quest. That's what their music always reminds me of. Triumphant! I then introduced her to a KZbin video of Eric eating a handful of cigarettes.

I don't know how I never stumbled across the band earlier, but I only discovered Foxy Shazam in 2019. I became an instant fan and binged their catalog. So many amazing and unique songs. Now I'm dying to see them live for the first time. Hope they tour Canada again soon.

They would make a great double bill with Eagles of Death Metal. That would be a fun night. I haven’t seen EODM in a few years but if they are anything like they used to be they could make a Tuesday night seem like the greatest Saturday night.

You've recorded yet another brilliant episode. While I was jogging an hour later I was still thinking about it. Even though your shows are served with a generous dollop of humor, there is usually a nugget of existential questioning in there. I was thinking about when I was in Blue Oyster Cult, what opening act never got their fair share of success that the so righteously deserved? That would have to be Mother's Finest, a group that is still active today. Joyce Kennedy is a brilliant singer and the band as tight as… (some kind of scatalogical reference) and their live show was insane. I don't know why a group like that is respected in the music community but not as popular as most of the headlining acts they toured with. So with that in mind l I will check out Foxy Shazam further. Looks like a good steer as we colonists like to say.

Mr. Hawkins, I can not say I'm a fan of your group The Darkness, outside maybe the one song about love that made it big, but I do enjoy watching you here on KZbin. After watching a video where you broke down a Slash song, I told my wife that I think you would make an excellent music teach. Anyhow, I don't know why I'm doing this comment other than you say "I enjoy your ramblings, you seem like a nice person. "

I saw Foxy Shazam live at Bamboozle 2008, and it was one of the most engaging, fun and hilarious performances I’ve ever seen. Eric is an incredible frontman. Loved his feature in that Macklemore song “Downtown” a few years ago Edit: Justin- you love The Dear Hunter?? Oh man that’s a band that deserves an extended video. Casey Crescenzo is one of the most talented and ambitious musicians out there.

Been a fan of Foxy since Flamingo Trigger. I can easily say they were the band at the top of my list that deserved more success and recognition than all the rest. I preach the Foxy gospel to anybody who listens.

Hey there, Justin! I have a fun fact for you. So, I grew up with Foxy in the Cincinnati music scene before they became as big as they are now, even had a friend who was in the band in their beginning stages (so proud of them and their accomplishments). In the Foxy video you featured here they’re at a famous bar here in northern Kentucky called Bobby Mackey’s Music World. It’s a cool local shout out but the fun fact is it is considered to be one of the most haunted places on Earth. Lots of books and television shows about it. It’s allegedly a “portal to Hell”. Love the channel! Cheers!

Big fan of Foxy Shazam been to 4 live shows each one better than the last. Great music great live stage performances even in tiny little clubs. We once ran into the band at a next door Arby's in Flint, Michigan next to the Machine Shop. We were dumb high school kids, they were a working class band touring just trying to get a bite before the show. Sky was super cool and took a picture with us. I've never seen a band work so hard, do so much, get so much recognition and have real raw talent, and make varied great undeniable music, yet still ultimately fall short of real fame and success in the way the band and the music deserves. To me, Foxy Shazam deserves to be as big as Coldplay. Their music and lyrics and stage performance and vocals and theatrics and talent and raw talent merit more attention. I do really appreciate that the great Justin Hawkins gives them props here. They are the greatest band that never was given the chance to fly as they so deserve

SO HAPPY to see this pop up today! I'm one of the many who asked for a video on them. I was first introduced 10 years ago when my buddy was crazy adamant that I give them a listen because he had done a show with them in Ohio. It really didn't take long to become intrigued and shortly therafter , completely hooked. What an absolute POWERHOUSE of a frontman Eric Nally is! There's just no one else like him. Sadly, I've never gotten to see them live , something always happens last minute that has prevented me from being able to go.(Including one year on my damn birthday! :( !) But that's ok. After a long hiatus, and during a terrible loooong depression, I found the song Dreamer right when they had just regrouped. I pretty much snapped right out of it, it was like a miracle magic act that I still can't explain. I am forever grateful, and would one day just really love to shake that man's hand. Thank you Justin, this was my favorite one yet!

I stumbled across their Dangerous Man video way back in the day! I finally saw them in San Antonio at the White Rabbit in 2010. Their live show was the craziest most amazing thing I've ever seen! I went up to Eric after the show and told him his band was the savior of Rock and Roll. haha! I tried to see them as often as possible before they vanished! Got to hang with them in Waco, Tx for a while after the show. We were trying to organize a time to see the new Predator movie together back then. haha~ I am still Facebook friends with a few members, and past members, :P I agree with you! They should be one of the biggest bands on Earth. I am glad they are back doing music !
