Absolutely, Listen Up is the lost or hidden masterpiece. There are lots of great Oasis B-sides of course, but most people have heard The Masterplan, Half the World Away or Talk Tonight at some point. Listen Up, however, has slipped by most non-Oasis fans awareness and it really is as good as anything they've written. As someone pointed out, the guitar melodies are among their best but Listen Up is also really poignant lyrically. The "I don't mind being on my own" part is really moving. Again, as someone else said, the original b-side version is one of Liam's best vocals too. Since the mid-noughties Noel has been doing a beautiful acoustic version live.. Superb song.

Oasis was my favourite band from age about 14 to 18. I managed to see them live at Leeds festival one year. I know every song, I bought every single and album as they came out. I learnt to play guitar and loved learning to play and sing their songs. What can I say, I’ve grown up now and moved into other things, but I’ll always love their music and appreciate them.

I love Oasis and whilst not the most "technical" musicians, they do what's exactly on the tin: Rock and roll. I find it refreshing when a more technical guitarist (I don't know how else to put it) appreciates Oasis. In my anecdotal experience, it seems the opposite occurs. I think regardless of skill, it all boils down to the sound and melody and if our ears dig it. My normal retort to musical snobbery is thus: You go and write hit albums using basic chords that have been used millions of times before. Good luck with that. Keep up the great work Mr. H

I'm a musician, with decades of amateur playing experience. After I started playing guitar and then playing actual passing music for other people, exactly what you are saying here was etched into my being. If a critic turned up, I would offer them my guitar and ask them politely to play something for everyone. In thirty years, no one ever did! It's easy to say "love it" or "hate it", but for any hecklers out there, exactly how many hit records have you made? Good comment.

Yep. Not so easy. If it was, why isn’t everyone doing it? I enjoyed Oasis as a young man & im liking a lot of NGHFB stuff as an older guy, too. If I was to see a band live, I’d very probably choose theatre sized venues right away. I’m with Noel on there being a different & more intimate vibe there. Stadium venues are intimidating & you see the artists from 50 yards away on a big screen. Everyone waving their phones. Not for me in my 60s.

I believe Noel has told his inspiration from the Stand By Me chromatic bit came from All The Young Dudes, by Bowie. And it makes sense. And while it's correct to say they sound like AC/DC on the rawer tracks, because Marshalls and open chords sound like that, I guess his main influence for that sort of guitar playing came from The Jam (which was kind of the Oasis of Noel's generation - I wasn't there but I believe they were massive in britain back in the early 80s, right before the Smiths came along).

I loved Oasis as a teenager and looking back I think it was more to do with their Pistol-esque attitude than the songs. They still wrote some great tunes and Noel had a majestic knack for melody for a few years but as a 43 year old now I don’t find the back catalogue over-exciting tbh

I loved them for the first two albums. And “Whatever”. But the songs that were overplayed off the second album like “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” got boring quickly. Best songs on it were “Cast No Shadow” and “Some Might Say” imo. Definitely Maybe was their masterpiece for me. After that there was an occasional good song like “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” but I couldn’t get into most of it. I think out of the Britpop battle, Blur have left behind a far more impressive back catalogue.

Nice to see you giving McCarroll some credit. I think he was perfect for the more punkish songs of definitely maybe, whereas Alan White was perfect for the slightly more nuanced songwriting of Morning Glory. Imagine Wonderwall or Don't Look Back In Anger without those ghost notes and triplet rolls. He's the brother of Steve White (Paul Weller , Style Council) who imo is one of the best drummers ever to come out of Britain. There's actually a gig or two where Alan is unwell and Steve fills in on drums for them and it's unreal.

I feel absolutely blessed that I found Oasis at 14/15 years old. They were the 1st real band i liked. I was brought up listening to music, mainly pop acts i liked or listening to old songs my mum liked. Oasis were MY band, and regardless what anyone says, they changed this country. Thanks to Oasis i am a very passionate music fan and have quite a varied taste (and a half tidy knowledge - i consider myself decent at popmaster!) Seeing this video, i thought, "oh here we go, lets hear him try and slag Oasis off....the cheeky fucker!" but to my surprise, i really enjoyed it. The only criticism i have is that it was too short! I'd like to hear you do more videos like this with other bands/acts. Bravo JH

Stand by me chorus always reminded me of All the young dudes. The George Harrison reference is valid, but the rhytm is more like Mott, and the tune is a Man City chant so it was also well embeded into Noel's mind.

It’s so much more similar in every way, also the lads literally sang all the young dudes while playing Whatever live and noel once claimed he stole the chord progression for DLBIA (pretty much identical to stand by me except for skipping inbetween chords and also adding in the chromatic run at the end) from All the young dudes. One guy who worked with Noel also once said that Noel wasn’t familiar with the medley of Abbey road and admitted to him that Abbey road was the “one beatles album” he hadn’t extensively listened to so i doubt he’d know something that well. The fact that justin hawkins claimed that despite it being clearly knicked from all the young dudes is embarassing and if i were him id probs delete this video and talk to a therapist about the mistake he made

Oasis were magnificent. What’s the story morning Glory is the greatest story ever told. I used to think it was just an album full of classic tracks but it’s so much more than that. The sequence, the songs, the interludes, the B-Sides… it’s all telling a story about Melissa Lim/San Francisco. When this comes to light (and it will very soon) it will blow people’s minds. Oasis were the reason that I wanted to play guitar as a kid, I just loved them. At the same time they also sparked in me the dream of wanting to be in a band. Years later they were the catalyst that led to me and three mates forming a band that lasted 7 years, and a further band with one of those mates that went on for another 3. Our music was completely different to that of Oasis but it just shows how far and wide a band's influence can be if they inspire people to play music. Thanks to Oasis I got to live my dream of playing in a band, travelling the country in a battered old van, sleeping on floors, getting paid nothing to do it but loving every last moment of it. For that Oasis will always have my love.

Honestly, in the 90s I was pretty leery of the "U WOT M8?!" vibe that Oasis put off. I wasn't sure if they were the sort of people to punch a fan in the nose for asking for an autograph so I didn't pay them much attention. I think I didn't really like "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" at the time and the constant "They're the next Beatles!" hype was off-putting. On top of that, it was reported that someone from Oasis said they hoped Damon would "catch AIDS and die" and that did a fair bit to sour me on the band. I don't know if they really said it but it was widely reported so I presumed it was true. I was pretty squarely in the Blur camp back then and their slick, easily digested poppy tunes were simple to accept and keep in the old CD player. Things changed a few months after Morning Glory? was released though. Blur came to town and local interviewer Nardwuar went and had a chat with them. From the get go, Dave Rowntree started to bully Nardwuar. It's unprovoked, and it's incredibly ugly behaviour. It lasts the entire interview while the rest of Blur just stands and laughs and allows Dave to continue to bully Nardwuar. You can see it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5yxp55ogsycecU Rowntree has since blamed his behaviour on cocaine but that feels like a cop-out. I don't imagine many of us would morph into nasty bullies if we did a little bump of booger sugar. That incident made me question which of the bands were the nasty ones. It seemed like there may have been a reason for the reported feud and I started to spend more time listening to Oasis. It took a few weeks but I defected to the side of the brothers Gallagher. As the years passed, I found more and more in the Oasis songs and my enjoyment listening to them grew. The Blur canon on the other hand started to show this unctuous sheen of gross commercialism. Not all of the songs, but a good many. The more accessible and basic poppy elements of their songs didn't age well. Oasis while imperfect, still surprises me at times when I hear something new in a song I think I know well. For me, they were harder to get into but they have endured far better than their rivals with the creepy bully.
@lucydolby1980

Just watched it. So uncomfortable to watch! Outright bullying. Sounds like Dave now uses it to keep himself in recovery so some good has come of it: "These days I keep a clip of the interview on my phone. I don't drink, smoke or take drugs, and if from time to time I wonder if I'm doing the right thing treading this (sometimes rather lonely) path I play it, and have the answer." Nardwuar responded to the apology on his Twitter page, where he wrote, "Thanks to Dave of Blur for this apology... I do appreciate it."
@OTOss8
@OTOss8 2 жыл бұрын
@@lucydolby1980 Yeah, I'm aware Dave said that and of Nardwuar's reply. You can watch him stream on Twitch most Mondays and Fridays at 3:30 PM PST. You'll have to forgive me if I don't dust my hands and say "well that solves that, all better now". I really do take a dim view of bullying. I think I'd be more inclined to believe the apology was heartfelt if the excuse of cocaine wasn't what was trotted out. To me it feels a bit like people apologizing by saying "I'm sorry you feel that way". Just own up to it. Say you made a terrible mistake and you behaved in a way that you're ashamed of. It just came across as him ducking responsibility for his actions due to the coke, but if being on coke absolved a person of responsibility then it would be handy to keep a bit around in case you ever found yourself in an automobile accident. Just take a little bump and say I'm normally a better driver but I was using coke. I do get your point though. Forgiveness is very important and Nardwuar is way too nice a guy to hold a grudge even if it's warranted. He's probably nicer than I am. If I ever cross paths with Rowntree I won't ask for a selfie or an autograph. I'll just ask to see the Nardwuar video. I'm not totally convinced he still keeps it there.

I know you asked for a bands name, but hear me out: The songs you listed are all written by one man and you know who he is. So if we consider one man being responsible for writing Oasis’ songs during that era, not including the possibility that management fucked up for them, I would like to throw in Ed Sheeran. Surely he must’ve been sued at least three times for ‘Perfect’ and that’s just one song! And it’s even worse in a time when it’s normal to see AT LEAST 4 names on the song credits of people who aren’t even in the band, I mean, how many songwriters does it take to rip off someone else’s song? That being said, I believe in some way that - while credit should always be given where it’s due!! - taking inspiration like that and channeling that energy into creating your own songs is part of the Rock’n’Roll tradition. As long as the band or songwriter(s) turns that into something which makes it their own instead of blatantly copying, it should be fine.
