I'm a bit late to the party...but I heard Mr Brightside by The Killers again recently, and somebody told that the song IS STILL in the charts. Still. How?! Why?! What's going on? Why is this song so popular, an anthem for some. Is it even good? What about it has captured the zeitgeist of its time? Let's discuss, please.

Man this made me laugh. You're a funny guy. In terms of the song I think they hit a nugget of gold when they combined those powerful feelings of jealousy with those positively charged anthemic melodies. I think people also feel a togetherness when they ball it out together at the nightclub. I feel like it's continued success has something to do with it being anthemic, but also to do with the complete lack of competition that surrounds it in todays charts.. keep these vids coming Justin!

The jealousy combined with the anthemic “destiny is calling me” stuff is perfect pop. There’s a dichotomy at play, pulling you down, then up. There’s this strange phenomenon in song writing where presenting a negative emotion or problem, followed by a positive one at the apex, gives the positive part a sense of emotional credibility. It’s not just a narrative arc like a book or movie because a pop song is 3 minutes and often vague. It taps into something fundamental in human beings.

I ran into the 3 of them (minus brandon) when they entered a restaurant in Amsterdam, I ended up playing pool with them and asked Dave Keuning (the guitar player) "what was it like playing live8 it must've been crazy with the amount of people there?" He replied "umm yeah" 😂 so I hustled them out of 40 euros shooting pool. He likes to say "yeah" it seems. 😂🤷‍♂️ looking back though I'm not too sure what I expected him to say. He didn't say much but I was wearing a Killers shirt that he didn't recognise and asked me where I got it from. I asked if I could have a pic with him and he didn't have any issues with that. I get the feeling he's maybe the quiet one in the band though :D

For me, there’s endless momentum and loads of melodic tension. Love the way the melody in the chorus jumps to “…PRICE I pay!” - instant hype. Also the way the main melody keeps coming up to the root like it’s it’s a ceiling, before broken through 🙌 Nice tense use of Vsus4 chord too. Post-chorus synth alongside the guitar is simple but sounds transcendent. Finally, the lyrics are very relatable and almost make a story about your partner getting off with someone else feel like a weird triumph. The use of “I never”, a twee English expression of surprise, but bellowed passionately, is a genius bit of songwriting.

The expression is "Well, I never". You can't abbreviate it to "I never" and have it mean the same thing. If that WAS the intended meaning, it would have had all 3 words at least the first time, (and then maybe just echo "I never"). That meaning is out of context anyway, and doesn't fit with the rest of the lyrics. And given the way "Well I never" is used in conversation, would be completely "cringe".

Top 5 essences of Mr Brightside: 1) Freedom: Jealousy is one of the more difficult emotions to quickly get yourself out of. And this song is an ode to the release of jealousy. Who doesn't want that in a bottle? 2) Brotherhood: I’ve lost count of how many times this song has made me put an arm around a complete (drunk) stranger and sing loudly together. What is the cure for jealousy? For over-attachment to one person? having a non-restrictive good time, and feeling like you have ‘brothers/sisters’ around you. This song is associated (in so many people) with dance floor experiences of feeling the love. 3) Euphoria & Chant: Mixing dance with indie. The repetitions of the riffs almost have a dance/trance music-like feel. It has a hint of that same euphoric feeling as stuff like born slippy, and just well, whatever trance music is doing, and mixes that with Oasis (the band) shout sing football match chanting. 4) Antidote: So basically, this song is an anthem that IS ITSELF the actual antidote to jealousy / over-reliance on one person. It is the essence of friends who you don’t have to try hard to impress. How many people have experienced having to almost change entirely who they are to try and ‘fit’ into a relationship? Or having a friend who completely changes who they are to the point you don’t recognize them because they are now in a relationship, and only then to have that f*****g thing break down and cause them pain, jealousy and hurt. 5) Real friends of adventure: The song is ACCEPTANCE, BROTHERHOOD, summed up in this quote from the 1986 film Stand by me: “I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?”

Really great summary, the lyrics are unashamedly transparent about the bread crumbs of jealously and what it does to you (the unraveling feeling perfectly emoted by the short bars at the start of the song and the pauses between each consonant for effect as each misdeed is laid bare). Then, the feeling of euphoria or release, where the subject almost embraces it and says in as many words 'I knew it all along, now I see it and it's on you, I'm moving on" the chanting/arm around another effect, we've all been there, I'm now shedding this skin.

Typical indie/pop songs have that verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus thing. The "I never" part feels almost like its own unique "not a verse or chorus or bridge" thing. It elevates above all of the rest of the song somehow (which almost all songs do not achieve). We don't even know (or care) what that "I never" means, but the pure acceptance in belting it out is exactly what we need to feel. And it feels f**king great.

This song is just catchy as hell, but speaking of this being played at a funeral. This song has a huge emotional impact on me now because my cousin's son died in an accident, and this was his favorite song. He was always such a friendly guy that was the life of the party. Even though he was only in his early 20s, he had randomly let his friends know that he wanted his funeral to be a celebration and that someone must play this song. So at the end of the event, they played this song as loud as they could and asked everyone to dance one last time for him like he was still there.

That’s such a beautiful thing to do. I wish more funerals focused on the celebration of the persons life. Tell the great stories, the funny stories, play their favorite tunes, try to have a laugh. These quiet whispery mournfests are just constant tears. Seeing so many people hurt is just devastating. We all will hurt, but I think it helps to really remember the best times with their closest friends and family. I’ve found that when people forgo the viewing part (the deceased didn’t want that) and slide shows were shown of their life and the good things leaves people still grieving but with a heart filled with love and some joy. I’m very sorry for the loss of your cousins son and so young. I swear the meanest worst people seem to live forever. Thanks for sharing that.

I think its success is the constant anticipation of the chorus. It's one big build up and the holding on one note in the vocal creates that tension and sense of urgency. Everybody also loves a song they can shout when they're drunk...

Brandon has gotten better with age; voice He keeps to himself (family man with kids) I think in an interview, he did say in the early years of fame fell away from his religious upbringing. Depending on who is interviewing him, he is quick witted and funny.

Just so you know, “substance abuse” is considered out of date terminology these days. It has the connotation of blaming someone who has what we now call “substance use disorder”. We’re talking way beyond ‘bad habits’, and instead about compulsion, when someone no longer has the choice to use/drink moderately, and so can’t make the decision to ‘abuse’ a substance. It is a lonely, painful, confusing place to be, because you act in ways that aren’t what you actually want. I wanted to share that as I just reached a year of sobriety. In this song there is a distinctive and immediately recognisable guitar riff, catchy as hell melody , driving bass line, and is easily sung at any event involving inebriation. The drumming on this track is masterful. He’s simple, driving but very decorated. Great hi hat work. If you listen to the drums you hear lots of little fills/ decorations that repeat themselves throughout the song. It adds a whole bunch of energy without distracting from the song/ drive. He adds to all the little hooks going on in the melody/ other instruments. The second verse drop and repeat of “it was only a kiss” is iconic.

This song never quite had its hooks in me until the Killers performed at the 2017 AFL Grand Final. My team won that year, breaking a 37 year premiership drought and one of our star players jumped up on stage and sung this song with the band during the post match concert. So now this song is anchored to a very positive memory for me (For those who don’t know, AFL stands for Australian Football League, and is the highest professional league of Australian Rules Football, a unique sport only played professionally down under. It’s basically Gaelic football played on a cricket pitch)

I recently revisited this album , & forgot how great it is , especially for a debut . The album has no fillers & you mentioned the bass , the bass playing is great ! The song is pretty incredible. I’ve had big debates with friends about why it has remained so popular. I think it’s because everyone has felt the pain of feeling betrayed and then , the important part for the song, obsessing over what might have happened. Can you think of other songs that empathize with that kind of mental obsession? I can’t. The other thing is that I feel it balances perfectly on the tip of dance and rock. At the risk of being a bit too much… just for the record… I think a “pedal” is only when a bass note holds underneath changing chords, not in the melody. Could be wrong but I think that’s it.

As an LDS (Mormon) person with a higher than average BMI I'd like to weigh in. The Killers Rhythm section is amazing and always serves the song. Ronald Vannucci Jr. has become one of my favorite drummers. Brandon Flowers is one of the best songwriters in the last twenty years. Regarding LDS underwear: Modern undergarmets resemble a typical undershirt and boxers. However, in the old days they were one piece and had slits for whatever business needed to be done. (There's nothing that different with regular undergarments of the time.) The garments themselves aren't sacred but the covenants the represent are. As far as health LDS folks are encouraged to use moderation in their diets with a few prohibitions. I struggle with this because I do like my sweets. Other than covering the undergarments LDS folks wear normal clothes. I think Brandon is just flashy.

I listened to the Killers Hot Fuss quite a bit, thought All These Things That I've Done was a great tune. I like The Darkness a lot more though and a shout out to Mr. Dan Hawkins for his great job producing, engineering and mixing Motorheart. The album gets better with every listen - I think Justin Hawkins is channelling Prince on It's A Love Thang (You Wouldn't Understand).

The reasons this song was such a great hit are 2: 1) It is incredibly easy to sing along to, the vocal part spends a lot of time on one note, or moving a step. It fits nicely in the average vocal range too. There is more challenge(?) in the chorus, but not much, and it feels great to sing. People like feeing competent. 2) it sounds great in a pub, when you’re drunk. The song is cocky. I don’t mean lyrically. I think that’s why it did so well in the Uk. That’s it. Don’t look further than that. Yes, there are nice things about the pedal note and the bass line descending, that all helps. But at it’s heart this isn’t a complex song, so don’t make it one.

I always appreciated the mix of the drums, synth and bass making the track sound as big as it does. The guitar is mostly clean arpeggios throughout the song up until the outro “I never…” part, only then does the guitar do any strumming with a little bit of gain, thus elevating the song that much more. Plus, in the context of rock music in 2003, it was a post-nu metal world and in America, bands like Nickelback Three Days Grace Puddle of Mudd and Godsmack were everywhere. Bands like The Darkness and The Killers were a huge breath of fresh air because no one in the mainstream sounded like that.

Also, not for nothing, but the early-00’s rise of bands like AFI, Thursday, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, The Used and My Chemical Romance in the mainstream was great too. I know that kind of music and aesthetics aren’t for everyone but there were incredibly talented musicians in those bands that ultimately inspired tons of kids to pick up an instrument.

I liked The Killers from the start but it was Day & Age that really got me into them. I’ve bought everything since. In fact Sam’s Town really grew on me over the years too. They have their own sound and he has great delivery. Still live his voice isn’t as good as on the albums. Compare him to Tom Chaplin from Keane who is a far better singer but The Killers are cool. The “riff” is a four note motif that sounds like The Edge or a Snow Patrol sped up! “I looked like a piece of actual shit” J Hawkins, 2022. That will look great in a book “The Darkness-In There Own Words!😂🤣😅 That Jealousy imitation has me cracking up. Brilliant Queen song!

To me this song exemplifies a few things 1. the tone, tempo and gradual build-up to the crescendo, particularly the line "Jealousy slowly taking over me" perfectly illustrates the cathartic feeling that comes with discovering the bread crumbs of infidelity, the desperation and frantic jealous feelings inside, and the call to action, to basically run straight away and do something , whether it be rational or otherwise. 2. The short rapid bars (the listener discovers the subject's multiple rapidly manifesting fears of this other person's infidelity and behaviour) and the feeling it creates with the subject seemingly unraveling, seems to have lasted the test of time and become the go-to UK anthem. The short domino effect bars make for an easy and great chant, plus the falsetto and elongated "eager eyes" just adds more emotion (the cherry on top of the chant) 3. For me, it's one of those songs that just gets better or I feel like I'm rediscovering it every time it comes back on the air waves, always reminds me of those great early days of the 2000s when people were talking about the dawn of a new rock era with bands like the Strokes, Killers, Bloc Party and Kings of Leon (when they were decent, some people say they never were) but I liked them during that time period.
