Julian Cope actually helped fuel the post-punk interest in Scott's music. Cope put together a compilation album called "Fire Escape in the Sky: The Godlike Genius of Scott Walker", which consisted of tracks from Scott's albums between 1967-1970 and only songs that Scott had written himself. It was released in 1981 and Cope himself said he did it because he wanted a new audience to discover Scott's music.

One shouldn't lose sight of the fact that this translation of Brel's lyric was penned by Mort Shuman, who'd made his name co-writing Brill Building pop classics such a Save the Last Dance for Me and Hushabye and Elvis hits like His Latest Flame, Little Sister and Viva Las Vegas. Then Mort fell in love with Brel's music and moved to Europe and had a singing career there... in French, no less. And Brel was Belgian, for what it's worth (and it's worth plenty).

Fellow francophone here! And yeah, I think it is fair to say that Brel had this "rock" quality in the sens that he sang songs for the sole purpose of "shaking" or "rocking" his audience if you will. He just had a much more eloquent way of delivering that sort of feeling. Because if you look at Amsterdam or even Les Remparts de Varsovie, you could very well picture those kinds of lyrics in a metal song, it's just that Brel's mastery of the french language has yet to be matched in that genre.

I was introduced to Brel’s music by Moni Yakim, the director of the original Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Once you go down that road you become obsessed. It was through Brel that I discovered Walker’s music, and while both are big influences on my songwriting, I have yet to release those songs. However, I think The Divine Comedy may be the one act carrying the torch for Brel and Walker.

Love this. Scott is one of my my favourite singers. Took my years to find his LPs. Then in the 90s found them all ion HMV. Really appreciate this! 😊❤️
