I was raised all over the US. Dad was oil refinery tech. My formative years we lived in Alabama. My mother made friends with a Cajun Matriarch, and I was "raised" by the Beasley family to hunt, fish, trap, skin, butcher, still and brew. I joined the Air Force right out of High School and went into non-traditional training where I knew more than the instructors on survival. I've since trained thousands to survive and thrive. I am retired now and raise my own food and make my own wine and mead. Rest for a Cajun is playing gospel, bluegrass, blues and family songs while passing a mason jar. The songs get softer and slower as the night goes on. This reminds me of those hot sticky nights with a cool breeze now and then listening to the guitar, harmonica, fiddle and box drum. Good times, good memories.

If you play bass, you might want to take a serious study of "the blues" - a surprising number of metal's sick bass guitar licks come from the blues. Most heavenly blues player I ever heard was actually the bassman for a metal concert warming up, Megadeth, I think, but it might have been Metallica or Guns & Roses (I was setting up T shirt booths in the concourse, while the tour guys got the stadium ready for the magic)

@@crabbtrixexp You are so kind., I am honored by that gesture. I can get by, but I have a 97 year old neighbor who has a major hernia from a man who kicked her after someone thwarted a rape attempt (on a then 91 year old woman)! She lives with her mentally handicapped daughter (70ish) and I worry about what happens when the mom passes. They live for each other. The medicine the mom needs is $3.50 a day ($105 per month), but they don't have enough money for food, let alone medicine, so I help out as best as I can. I cannot bear to see her in pain at the end of her life. She is one of the kindest women I have ever met. They have no one else in the community who can help, so I stop by every week with a package of pills, and some rice and veggies. The past few months I cringe when I see the daughter approaching my home to look for tomatoes, onions, chicken, toilet paper...because as a foreigner, there is no way I can say no to their needs. It has been a struggle to help (and to do so graciously without feeling burdened - I am not always at that point, truthfully). I need tires, but they need food and they will always win out. If you would like to help my neighbors, they would consider a gift from God. A few months ago I bought a big box of groceries. The daughter was ecstatic that I had included a big bar of laundry soap, evidently something they had not had in a while. And the excitement over a soft brand of toilet paper for the outhouse made me want to cry. It was beyond humbling. I may be living the blues, but their life has been the blues for most of their existence. My YT channel has an email link. You can reach me there if you would like to help. Thank you so much for your kindness.

Make a mental point to stay off them through the hardest time. Been there, that's the only way to go. Otherwise, you are risking relapsing when the time gets harder. Purposefully stay off them through the "as bad as it gets" part. Literally brute force through it using sheer willpower. Remember that once you are through it, nothing can make you go back, and you are free. You can do it. Good luck on your journey, it's worth it on the other side.

If you've put it down in the last 2 months... here's your sign to go pick it back up again! The learning curve is steep, especially as you get older, but it's not impossible and it's SO rewarding. My oldest student was 68, and she was awesome! Stick to it! You got this!
@melodyscamman2443 жыл бұрын
Sandra, don't play those stupid songs in the Mel Bay books, that is what is driving you to distraction. Go to the piano and tune to DADGAD. The lowest 3 strings can slide down together. You can just slide and drop in harmonics here and there...oh yes you can. Play with the lights off, just what ever sounds good. It will all fall into place. Also, to learn to finger pick, start with some John Prine songs and run your fingers slowly first the pick up the actual correct timing. Go for it! I am 62 and had a heart attack and triple by-pass, stroke and a broken shoulder and arm. I still play but it hurts like hell in my arms but I still do it. We all played till our fingers bled.

Don't give up, I learned guitar at 15 all completely self taught, within a couple or few short years I was playing covers of some of my favorite bands and videogame composers. 18 years later I've been slacking hard for the last handful of years after some friends I jammed with moved away or had kids, but after finding this dark blues by JJ it's inspiring me to pick up my axe again. 👍 It's never too late to start. The best advice I can give you is to stick with it, because as you improve it becomes far more enjoyable, which leads to even further motivation.

I've been listening to JJ for a few years now, although I don't really have the time to sit and around and do things for enjoyment these days. As everyone on this thread said, this is a totally world-class blues player and we are lucky and privileged to get to track him down and listen to the music so easily. This collection puts me in mind of the first season of True Detective, which was a DARK and somewhat disturbing mini-series. It would have been a splendid soundtrack for the show, although I can't say that T Bone Burnett didn't do a good job, I just think this is even darker and eerier and fit the Louisiana swamps perfectly. Whether you think so or not, this is high praise from me, because I loved the soundtrack that Burnett produced. I just love this more.
