Those two songs were recorded way before he left his wife, which he did in 1986-ish. I’ve always loved this one. Brian writes some real bangers, and he can still come up with these gentler ones. He’s a great songwriter.

Brian was a very melodic writer at times! Another song about his complicated love life. Thanks for all the reactions!

Brian’s solo records Another World and Back to the Light he’s really come to his own as far as his vocal style. Listen to songs like Love Token, China Bell and Resurrection. Cozy Powel was his drummer on those.

Great reaction. Brian's got a nice smooth voice. Roger has a gravelly rocker voice. Freddie holds the universe in his voice. John's their dancer.

Well after being a Queen fan since I was 10 years old (since 1980) I’ve learnt something new today, I always thought that the bridge section was Freddie, didn’t realise it was Brian’s voice sped up. Love the reaction videos keep them coming 👍

One of my favourites from one of my favourite albums. It just seemed to fit for me listening to it, back then, and as with practically every other recording that you tend to get, let's say, a tiny bit obsessed with over a period of time when having first heard it, you automatically associate it with the time in question, whenever you listen to it again. And, nearly 46 years later, it still has the same effect on me. Brian's dulcet vocal tone and the sense of melancholy within them along with the subject matter of leaving home not being easy, with the added sentiment of it being worse for those you're leaving home. The acoustic guitar giving a more homely feel to it all. Which is very apt. Wonderful album track which, despite being a little bit of a downer, kind of gets you in the mood for what is probably one of the most up-lifting songs ever made!

A pretty melancholy sounding song. More sweet than amazing. I like the way his guitar almost sounded like a violin to me at times. Like your reaction Justin ✌🏼

Yes about the voice...less "timid." People's back stories do have an influence.

Love this track... incredible chord changes and those "string" parts are just wonderful... I think Brian does a great job on vocals and I often wonder if it would have been better known if Freddie had done the vocals. That sped up vocal really sounds modern now I think...

Hearing May, or Taylor sing lead reminds me why their harmonies are so very good. Very nice song & addition to the album.

I really like Leavin' Home, I think it's a well composed song. Brian's voice improved substantially when he started his solo career after Freddie's death. Recently I heard one of his songs for the first time; Teasin' Around. I could hardly believe it was Brian, his voice is deeper and more powerful. Once again, thanks Justin for brightening my day .

Totally agree on May evolving his singing. But standing next to Mercury... That`s like Bob Ross next to Rembrand. Both talented, but way different. ( Bob Ross was better then i ever would be, but hey, for comparissment sake.)

Guitars add so atmosphere to this track. Brian Really pushes himself vocally, the high note at the end, nice. This is the second to last Queen album track that Brian sings lead. On the next album, Freddie puts his foot down about it. If Brian and Roger are singing two tracks each per album, that leaves only about 60% of the album for Freddie. Not good enough darling.

I can imagine that when you’re a 2nd singer in a band with Freddie,.. it can take some time to find your place. The things that standout to me about this whole album is the sound engineering going on from song to song. This song for example has a fuller recorded voice and fuller darker acoustic guitar sound as opposed to other recordings. Even the drum sound on this song sounds more complex…. The opening guitar chords have a darker sound as does Brian’s voice, let alone more “confident “.

Brian was always very shy about singing. It was very rare for him to sing lead live. Something I totally understand. From this point onwards he really started shine. As I've said before, his opening verse on Who Wants To Live Forever was beautiful. I could listen to him sing gentle songs like this all day.

It's interesting throughout this journey because one thing I have noticed is Brian's songs may not be all the hits but they are really good. Talk about growers and it only takes two or three listens and I can't get them out of my head including this one...

I've read that the swells were done with the faders rather than volume pedal or knob.

yeah would be really interesting to know.. .I read somewhere he was playing a lot of single notes and overdubbing rather than them being chords... it's a really interesting sound for sure..

Brian is a singer and had his own band after Freddie died. And during Queen days he had the lead on quite a few songs.

I think 39 was Brian's most impressive lead vocal but that song, composition-wise, was a work of art so maybe that acted as a booster for anyone with a half decent voice? But, I agree, he is very good here, possibly his best ever. It's ironic you should say he's finding his voice in lead vocal because I think the next album, The Game, was his last to feature him on lead while Freddie was still with us?

Hey Justin, great channel. Interesting to see your personal journey with Queen. I'd be interested to know your synopsis on Queen and their transition through the albums. Which album is your favourite album/era to date? Bicycle Race and other Jazz songs are a far cry from Liar and Son and Daughter on their first album. Did Queen sell out to pop music or did they manage to keep their avant garde aura? Also, one good thing about the Beatles was the variation of Ringo songs, George songs as well as Paul and Johns songwriting, do you not think the decision to have songwriter variation was a good thing overall?

This song kind of sounds of a Beatles influence to me. It's late was recorded before Brian and his first wife even got married and this album was long before Brian and Chrissy were separating or even having cracks in their marriage so it is probably not about him and more about something he is witnessing around him.

Thanks, Justin.. Brian is so emotional... lol I really hope you get around to some of solo works after Queen... I know it doesn't belong in this line-up.. but this one, please? will blow you away (if and when you get to it...)...Brian had such vocal talent... of course he said himself "eventually we all realized that everything sounded better when Freddie sang it...".. still: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYukiml3npWCsNk.

im surprise you havent not done the 2 new Geddy Lee song yet, the lost demo, i think those 2 songs are surprisingly good, and even more after multiple listen (realy!) , i think they are completely different from rush and even from is solo album, and i think they are better than a lot of Rush song (im realy a big Rush fan, so even more surprising for me) and those on is solo album as well, looking forward for your review. :)

To me this sounds so much like Dark Horse era George Harrison, it's eerie. May even sounds like Harrison during that unfortunate period. I don't like it. Jazz rating: 2/10.
