I really like Justin. He always explains 'how' to play things. I used to be a great guitar player, but with time comes change, so I had to put down the guitar for 30 years or so. Well, now that i am 70, I have some time to 'start again'. Thank you Justin for helping me on my journey!

Great job , thanks for the lesson. I loved it. The capo works well for the version "Early years vol2". The same chord progression works for the version in the album "Closing time". I found easier to do the F/G and G9 using my thumb.

I have a couple of Tom Waits sheet music collections and have learnt maybe a dozen songs for the piano, but I always steered clear of trying guitar adaptations because it seemed clear to me that Waits composed the songs on the piano without thought for the complexities of his chords when translated to the guitar (his love of keys such as F , F#, C# and his not infrequent modulations by, say, half a tone up to four times in a song are more evidence of this). So, hat tip for producing a guitar version, which I will certainly give a go! Keenly anticipating your version of Christmas Card From A Hooker in Minneapolis. :-)
@garethcarroll29107 жыл бұрын
The original is on guitar
@PeterBirks7 жыл бұрын
Yes, sorry, I am aware of that (have all of his albums). But I am sure that Waits *composes* on piano. And I suspect that he did with this one as well.
@PeterBirks7 жыл бұрын
I'd add that these chords seem (to me) much more "natural" on piano. But maybe that's just me because I learnt piano first.
@PeterBirks7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, it is interesting to compare the version performed live on "The Dime Store Novels" with (I think) the later recorded version on "Closing Time".
@garethcarroll29107 жыл бұрын
I guess you'd have to ask TW. Pretty much the rest of the album is on piano. Maybe he preferred it on guitar.

Hmm everyone else has this in C but you've got it in D. Did you transpose it so you could sing it higher instead of in Tom's gravelly baritone?
@JustinGuitarSongs4 ай бұрын
It is the chord 'shapes' that are the thing. The capo makes the whole thing movable to raise the key up from open position key of C, to fret 2 key of D as here, and beyond. Cheers 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher www.justinguitar.com
@BookClubDisaster4 ай бұрын
@@JustinGuitarSongs Same chord voicing, yes. But I do think it's a bit misleading to teach it in the key of D when the original version is in C. I notice a lot of guitar teachers have this, "Whatever key feels right" view to teaching songs which I don't quite understand. Seems to me it should always start with the actual original key and if people decide to play around with it, they can.
