Death Valley in a Heat Wave - The 130º Adventure

What is Death Valley like in a heat wave? What does it feel like to stand, walk, even hike in temperatures above 125°? How fast does a popsicle melt? Can you cook an egg in a frying pan without any flame? These are the questions we attempt to answer as we chase the hottest temperatures ever recorded on planet earth, in this century at least.
Death Valley, the hottest place on earth. On Aug 16, 2020 a record 130° air temperature was recorded, the hottest temperature recorded on the planet in 107 years. The current recognized world record was the famous 134° temperature set in Death Valley at Furnace Creek in 1913. That record has come under scrutiny however, and along with several other record highs, could be thrown out. If this happens, as seems likely, the 130°F temperatures recorded on Aug 16 will be the hottest verifiable air temperatures recorded on earth. Less than 48 hours later, during the peak of the heat wave, we arrive on the scene in Death Valley. Will the record be broken? Can we survive 130°? And seriously, how long does the average popsicle last in that kind of heat?
Come along on one heck of a high heat adventure, to Death Valley. It don’t get no hotter than this!

Surprised how many comments are about us wearing long sleeves. LONG SLEEVES are ESSENTIAL for Desert Survival. Think Bedouin or Desert soldiers… you dont see them in tank tops. The air, sun, and heat radiation is so hot, and the evaporation is so intense at these temperatures that LONG sleeves are a huge survival MUST. Any quick google search will prove the point. Just leaving this comment since so many people clearly don’t know. Here’s some links below; www.wikihow.com/Dress-for-Desert-Conditions www.treksw.com/desert-hiking-clothing-checklist-2/ blog.coolibar.com/the-secret-advantage-of-long-sleeves/ www.outsideonline.com/1769041/what-should-i-wear-desert-hiking www.apathways.com/survival-blog/survival-tips/desert-survival-gear-essential-items/

I went there July 23, 1981 and it was also a heat wave year. We did not get out of the car from near the beginning of the Valley until we got to Furnace Creek. When I got out at Furnace Creek it was a feeling that I will never forget. The wind was blowing and it was scary. The clerk at the front desk at the hotel looked at us like we were idiots for even being there. The next morning when I got out of bed I will never forget- I went out on the balcony and it was still dark and about the coolest time of day or night and there was a mercury thermometer on the wall that read 118 degrees.

I live in the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs/Coachella[duh]) and we hit 122 the other day and 125 a few years back... you step outside and think "I can handle this, Im good" and about a minute later, you realize that you can't. Its that hot. The human body starts to cook at 120, its not a fun feeling to have sweat instantly form and evaporate without any cooling effects. The heat feels like a 50lb weight on your shoulders, and the reflective heat from the ground is even worse, like being pushed hard into your chin by someone from below. Our pool was about 101 degrees tonight, kinda felt like a spa. Summer sucks! Double edit; everyrhing he is describing is about right!

The first time I went there was with my mom on my 21st birthday (Vegas trip) and it was in a torrential rainstorm. The roads were so flooded and my mom was crying but wouldn't let me drive the rental car because I wasn't insured. The temperature was 114-115° and the rain didn't bring it down at all!

Glad you survived! You now have me beat by 4 degrees - my hottest is 126. I can vouch for that oven blast feeling, and I remember having to use my t-shirt to be able to hold the car door handle. "It's a dry heat" only applies up to about 120 in my opinion.

I liked your little adventure. I grew up in Reno, NV. I know the desert. Yes, respect the desert. Drink water constantly. I like your long sleeve shirt idea. I use a wet shirt and wet cloth around my neck. I miss the smell of sagebrush. I also miss the quail in Reno. It's so much fun to see the little family walking in a straight line down the sidewalk.

I think everyone should experience this once. And once is enough! Bro here is absolutely right that there's a BIG difference between 115 and 125! At 115 it's really hot. At 125 it's so hot it's painful - even in the shade. You can feel the hot, dry air sucking the moisture out of your lungs. You feel the sun burning your skin and you go, "No, wait... I'm in the shade," and realize it's literally the HOT AIR burning you!
