Love that you're thrifting your dress. I got mine at Salvation Army for $20 15 years ago. Brand new overstock from a bridal salon. No stains or even a bead out of place.

There used to be a show on TV where a bride to be and her mom/grandma or whoever brought the old wedding dress to be remodeled for the bride to be. At the end they show the before--bride modeling old, outdated dress--and the remodeled dress and they also let the bride choose a new dress and then bride decided whether she wanted to wear the new dress or her mom's/grandma's remodeled dress. It was amazingg what that seamstress did with those dresses. I love the victorian dress.

On the 1st dress…do NOT cut that skirt off until you give it to your girlfriends Mom. She might use part of the top for a waistband.. I sew and that’s what I’d do. A nice wide waistband♥️

the second dress is not 50's, it is late 80's/early 90's and looks like a Jessica McClintock or possibly her son, Scott McClintock.

I have seen people remake/modernize a similar dress here on KZbin for a bride who was wearing her mother's gown. The seamstress kept the skirt pretty much as it was, but she lowered the neckline to show cleavage, took out most of the sleeves and had an off-shoulder flutter style sleeve. She made a choker necklace from the top of the neck of the dress. Which gave it the Scarlet O'Hara barbecue dress style. the top of the neck of the dress had a cameo looking style medallion in the center of lace neck so it was prefect as a choker necklace.
