Not too long ago I've learned about your channel and the "insane amount of work you do on it" (in your own word😂). First let me say that by using just "insane" you are selling yourself short. So far and honest to God you are my most trusted laptop reviewer. Always on point and always mindful for us "the users". So as insignificant as it may seem I wanna say thank you for being on KZbin and doing what you do, and I wish you all prosperity and success. Second I have a small suggestion! It would be awesome if you could make a video on ryzen laptops (best for each price class, and best overall), also do you think that people should wait for nex gen in perspective to (normal flow users, producers, coders, and heavy users). Thank you Stay safe.

Great review and thanks for going extra miles to clarify the myths about the processor performance. Notebookcheck also confirmed same about the i5 model of this laptops, beating i7 in other Ultraportables. In other Ultraportables, going for i7 may be due to having the 96EU version of the XE Graphics, but for this, sticking with i5 is the best choice since this having a dedicated GPU.

In my opinion any review of a laptop with a screen resolution taller than 16x9 should include an assessment of the readability of alphanumeric characters. I know this almost must be subjective, but Josh's report of the number of Excel lines he could comfortably read (about 7:50) was as valuable a metric as I've heard. I went through this part of the video three times. Subscribed.

Hey Josh, there’s a good reason Intel charges more for the i7 versions, and that reason is binning. i7 chips are generally no different than the i5 chips, except the i7 chips hit better core clocks at a given voltage, because of the higher quality binned silicon. So going for an i7 would still give you a good ~200MHz boost without increasing the power consumption of the chip.
@noelwade3 жыл бұрын
@Josh - Thanks for the content & details, as always! To answer your question: This laptop is for people like me who want something more portable and stylish than a 15" battlestation, who need an outdoor-capable screen, good battery-life, a microSD card slot, and want slightly better performance than Intel XE graphics (or way better performance than Vega integrated graphics), for light gaming and KZbin content creation. Since 13-14" AMD thin-and-light laptops are nearly unobtainable right now, this HP Envy 14" is pretty darned close to ideal - for me, if no one else! I actually *love* almost everything about the Razer Book 13 I just picked up, _except_ the Razer's keyboard is terrible! Shallow key travel with a mushy bottom and if you don't hit the keys in the middle, they don't register. It ruins an otherwise *incredible* laptop with amazing build-quality! (The only other bummer is its lack of dedicated GPU)

I would really appreciate some help and advice here. I'm having an extremely hard time deciding on a laptop to buy. My budget is $1500 - $2000 though I'm willing to stretch it a little more if I see more value. I don't play any games whatsoever. I use photoshop a lot and recently I have been interested and learning to do some video editing and audio production with Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition. Everything works fine on my current laptop except for Premiere Pro which won't even run. It would also be nice if Photoshop and my audio production software would run faster. I currently have an Ultrabook 2-in-1 with touch screen (Dell Inspiron 13 7378, 2018 version) and it's very outdated for me and just doesn't meet my needs any more with it's integrated Intel UHD 620 GPU. You have to understand I didn't even pick this laptop to buy it was simply a $400 bargain 2 years ago in a brand new condition and I just ended up liking it until I started looking into video editing. I don't want to invest in a desktop setup now since I move a lot, a laptop is a must for me. Last year I was very excited about Huawei Matebook Pro X (2020 version) and I'm so glad I didn't buy it! But then I got excited about the new Dell XPS 15 model with touch screen and GTX 1650 Ti until Nvidia announced their RTX 3000 series so I decided to wait for the new laptop models with the new GPUs. The dilemma I have right now is this: 1- My laptop is not good enough for my needs by any means, I have been waiting for quite sometime now but I need to buy a better performing laptop sooner than later. 2- I use the touch screen on my laptop quite a lot, the tablet mode and being able to flip the screen 360 degrees isn't very important, but I got very used to a touch screen that I'm just having a hard time accept a laptop without on. 3- I considered XPS 17 9700 with RTX 2060 and I love that device, except I don't feel comfortable spending over $3k which is a lot over my budget and I still won't be getting the RTX 300 series. 4- It's really hard to find a laptop that fits these needs. I have recently been interested in the Zephyrus G15 GA503. Yet grew disappointed because of the soldered ram slot (I understand I'll need to upgrade the ram to get a better video editing experience) and the lack of even a bad webcam to be used while in transit in an airport for example. The lack of touch screen isn't a big issue though. 5- I have considered Asus flex 13x but I don't like the proprietary eGPU I understand I'm comparing apples to oranges when I put tiny sleek Ultrabooks side to side with Performance gaming laptops. I'm just lost between the two. I don't care about FPS since I'm not a gamer. but I need a good display in a sleek portable laptop. What are my options and what're you suggestions? Should I get something of what's available now? (and what would that be?) or should I wait a bit more for new things that might come out soon? (Will Dell even make a new XPS with RTX 300 series this year?) Thank you for reading and for any replies in advance!

As someone who is really interested in this laptop for general personal use as their "main" personal computer, I think I can help you with the question "who is this laptop for?" I think, while there is nothing this laptop is "the best" at (other than maximizing the performance of an i5, wow!), it is an extremely solid all arounder. I want good battery life. I want a dedicated GPU for heavy gaming, on lower settings if I have to but I can squeeze in a lot more games on a 1650 than on integrated graphics. I want light weight. I want a 16:10 screen. I want good I/O. -The Specter has a taller screen and a lighter weight, but its port selection is very limited! -The macbook pro has better battery life, but way fewer games will run on it (also port selection is even worse). -The Omen and the Envy 15 have better graphics performance, but are a lot bigger. -I think the Zephyrus G14 is the most comparable competitor, so I can understand someone wanting to go for it instead. Similar size, with a lot more graphics performance. But it has no webcam! I kinda expect my main laptop to have a webcam, I gotta call my parents and stuff, you know? Also I'm pretty sure you can't charge it off of USB-C which is a huge minus in my book. Also no thunderbolt but that's less specifically important; I'm fine with regular USB-C *if* it supports displayport alt mode and power delivery. Thunderbolt is nice because it guarantees those things -System76 sells the Galago Pro which is very similar, except with more ports (ethernet! 2 USB-Cs!) and Linux by default (you could install Windows though, nothing's stopping you). Unfortunately I think they are having supply problems, and are having trouble fulfilling the configuration with the 1650. Also its battery is smaller. It's technically a Clevo chassis, but good luck finding other sellers of it. I will definitely *envy* those RTX 2060 GPUs though. I wanted to hold out for a 3050 or 6500M (and Wifi 6e!) but ran out of patience when my 5 year old laptop started impacting my job interviews

Hi. Love your reviews. Absolutely on point. I want to buy a laptop for work (multitasking), please advice if the HP Pavilion 14 dv0058tu fits the category. What are the pros and cons....Thanks!

I guess I'm just confused on why you spend a whole beginning part of the video talking about how good the i5 variant is with it's cpu performance, but then at the end when you are mentioning who it's for you use a picture with the i7 variant selected (even though you've mainly been talking about the i5 one) and say if it were around 1,200$ you'd recommend it. But the one with the i5 is 1,250$ Is there a reason for doing it this way?

That was a mistake in the b roll. The i5 model I have did match the price I was referring to. We will be more careful with the b roll in future

Linus said it best. "A higher clocked processor that thermal throttles will not perform better than a lower clocked one that doesn't".

Great review :-) Would you recommend it for someone for whom Yoga 7 Pro with Ryzen 4800H would otherwise be perfect, but needs a bit more GPU power?

Very useful vid for me, great stuff Josh! Very interested in how the graphics performance is noticeably better than the Spectre 14... Might have to take that laptop off my list.

From an value standpoint I totally agree with you regarding i5 vs i7. Regarding performance though I want to add my two cents: the idea behind the Tiger Lake i7 is that its able to deliver better performance because it can achieve higher frequencies while using the same power as the i5. Of course, if one lowers power, because of insufficient cooling or other reasons, the result may be an i5 clocking higher than an i7. With the same cooling however the i7 should be able to sustain higher frequencies. Thats because in general i7 get the better quality silicon dies, the ones that are less capacitive and therefore need less voltage to achieve a given frequency. So im curious on what frequencies the i7-1165G7 and i7-1185-G7 would run inside a Laptop that can cool 42 W sustained . I would expect them to run at the advertised 4,1 GHz or 4,3 GHz sustained, which in CB 20/23 equals 4,1/3,8 = 1,08 or 4,3/3,8 = 1,13 the score of the i5. At the time of writing I wasnt be able to find any reviews for the Envy 14 i7-1165G7 unfortunatly.

I clicked on your link but I don’t see an option to choose i5 with 1650ti. Only 1650 Max Q. Did I miss something?
