" Subdivisions " is considered one of their best songs(save for the few who only like Rush's long songs), not just for the music, but for the lyrics too, being about feeling like an outcast/powerless, a huge majority of people have felt that way at least once in their lives, it hits hard emotionally

This is my favorite Rush song and one of my favorite songs ever. The dark, washy synths. The elegant, complex drums that complement everything. The tasty bass licks. The guitar's power chords and snarling solo. The earnest, pleading vocals. Not only are the melodies of the vocals and solos perfectly sing-able, the lyrics also hit _so_ hard: themes of loneliness, powerlessness, conformity, mundanity, escapism. The line "Be cool or be cast out" is so simple, but it slays me, dude. This is the first song I listened to as soon as I heard that Neil Peart had passed in January 2020.

This song gave me such comfort that I was not the only one who was "not one of the cool kids", and I was truly a "dreamer" and a "misfit"! And at 69 years old, it still gives me **almost** flashbacks to my high school days! One of my favorite Rush tunes and the only Rush tune I can play on bass, keys, and vocals. I had the fortune to play it on Cruise to the Edge and due to technical difficulties I became an “instant folk hero” on the ship. Being given only 5 minutes to set up bass, bass pedal, and the keys tech showing me which keyboards have the verse sound and the lead synth for solos… well I forgot to check the mic. So I went in to start singing the first verse and there was nothing. So I kept on going, singing, with nothing coming out of the speakers or the monitors. Near the end of the first verse, Mike Thorne, the drummer for Saga sticks a mic in my face and Rob Rutz the organizer trying to “rectify” the situation with a new mic. Mike even said “Subdivisions” while we entered the chorus. By the second verse the mic incident had been restored. The whole thing was captured on video by my wife and on my channel if you care to take a look

For me, this is tied with 2112 as my #1 Rush track. It culminates EVERYTHING that made Rush great (yes, even the synth - this had just the right amount - never taking over!) I get chills, literally, at the opening synth drone of this song, the drums are on point, Geddy's bass lines are amazing, and Alex does what Alex does best - give a perfect atmosphere then kick your a$$ with a killer solo... and then come the lyrics! As one of those 'dreamers/misfits' & self-professed 'nerd' - this song spoke directly to me (and so many like me). Neil was painting a picture of himself, of his childhood & adolescence, of his feeling the pressure to fit in, but not - which mimicked so, SO many of us to a 'T'. Rush, the thinking person's band, was communicating on a human level more than any other track so far (IMHO), which solidified them for me as my band, and a fellow Canadian no less (I live just outside of Toronto). Rush perfected the science of taking a long progressive epic, and compacting it into a 5 1/2 minute masterpiece! Thanks Rush & RIP Neil.

The benefit of living in New England as they have concerts that are within a couple hours driving distance so you can see a show during a tour twice very easily.

@Vimana2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Justin. I really enjoyed your reaction once again. You always have great things to say and I love to hear what you think. Subdivisions is a truly great song that also has a couple of my favorite drum parts and fills. The melodic synthesizer theme after the chorus and between the verses is fantastic with such well chosen notes. Geddy Lee is an exceptionally good bassist but I appreciate him as a keyboard player as well. There are many well played synth parts and well created sounds on this album including some great guitar parts. The Analog Kid is a good example of that and has an impressive guitar solo as well. I think all the albums from the 1980s has some of the best guitar parts Alex Lifeson ever created. Geddy also played some of his most interesting bass lines. People don't mention it so often anymore but Rush used to have these chapters. They made four albums and then a live album. After that there were some more pronounced changes in their sound and they started to look more into the future, so to speak. A Farewell to Kings, Signals and Presto all started these new chapters for the band. I absolutely love Caress of Steel and 2112 but the next two chapters really defined Rush for me. Signals started the 3rd chapter. All the albums from that chapter ending with the live album "A Show of Hands" was still "classic Rush" for me. The chapter that Presto started in 1989 wasn't my favorite but had some really good songs as well. "Available Light" from Presto is one of my favorites. There were still a couple of fresh new ideas but I didn't find them as much as before. I still thought the album "Roll The Bones" had some great vocal melodies but it seemed to me that the focus of the songwriting went to somewhere else after that. I know people who really like the Counterparts album. This chapter, especially on Counterparts, was more guitar driven and focused a bit more on guitar riffs with a heavier guitar sound. The song "Stick It Out" is a good example of that. (I know "Stick it out" has some heavy sounding riffs but how about the vocal melodies? They just work and do their part but doesn't do much more for me. There was somewhat of a stylistic change and you could find these kind of vocal melodies on later Rush albums much more.) It seemed that many people were happy to get songs that sounded "more rock". It just wasn't what I needed from Rush. For me, the chapter that started with Signals was full of great melodies and well-crafted songs. Some of the best vocal performances by Geddy also had beautiful melodies containing many of the very best lyrics written by Neil Peart. It didn't matter to me if it didn't sound as close to rock music than before or after that. It was still rock but with some innovative additions to the sound. Well, you could almost call it symphonic rock. There are some good examples of that on Hold Your Fire, like the middle section of "Second Nature" for example. "Manhattan Project" from Power Windows also had a string section. Hold Your Fire had a couple of beautiful songs that were quite unusual. You could even say those songs are closer to the music of some great film composers, maybe even Vangelis. Is that a bad thing? I always loved the variation. It was just absolutely fantastic music with a lot of creative arrangements. Many people I know, myself included, really like the symphonic prog rock of the 1970s. Could it be that the biggest problem of this Rush chapter for some of these people is that it took place in the 1980s? Well, that's my thoughts. Take care and I hope you're having a great day.

This is one of Rush's best tracks, you can feel the spirit of the 80s here, bass, drums, guitar and synthesizer all the time compete with each other and catch up with each other, it's so beautiful, you enjoy listening to such music, the lyrics and the meaning of the song are also at the highest level, By the way, the lyrics were written only by the drummer and poet Neil Part, this song has been on my playlist for a long time, I don’t know, in my opinion these guys conveyed everything they wanted to convey to the listener, and there is also a video that simply complements the song, but the studio version was enough for me to do everything understand. I have to say that IMHO this is the last great RUSH Album. It heralded a massive time of change for the band. A change of sound,a change in production, a change of direction with regards to songwriting. A change in Geddys' voice from a distinctive diminutive voice to an almost monotone talk. Signals only showed a slight of all these changes...it really came to the fore with the abysmal "Power Windows " I'm a massive RUSH fan but an honest one. Could you imagine Power Windows being released before, Moving Pictures, Farewell to King's or Hemispheres! Their careers would have ended with PW. After Signals they changed from being undoubtedly the greatest rock trio of all time to merely a very good band. Some Rush fans will scream at me that they evolved......well that's true but not for the better. There is the odd one or two great songs in the latter era Tai Shan being one.......but in general the Rush heyday ended around 1984.

The Rush albums where there's more synths/keyboards are my favourite Rush albums. This song is a perfect demonstration why! And that bass! Sometimes it is like Chris Squire was playing some parts. Great song from a great album.

Not sure you could not heard this song, but you just cracked open an amazing album. Keep going. Listen to it all. And Permanent Waves too. And Moving Pictures. Let’s go!

My 3rd ever concert was seeing Rush on the Signals tour (with Golden Earring opening)... amazing show and a cherished memory. To answer your question, I'd say that 99% of Rush fans would probably put this song in their Top 10. One of those moments when it all came together just right. Personally, I think 'Countdown', which closes this album, is on equal par, a truly magnificent song that closes the record perfectly.

I wish we had gotten Golden Earring. We got Rory Gallagher, no disrespect

This is tied for me with Xanadu as my favorite song. The combination of all the roles played and the lyrics make this the most cohesive song for me. The lyrics are Neil’s best, IMO. The intro is so interesting and energetic. The synths have aged well and still feel fresh unlike some other 80s music where their use dates the songs. I never tire of hearing this song.

If you were in high school in the 80’s, this track spoke to you,..

Signals came out 40 years ago last month. Forty. Years. And I still remember getting the LP the minute it hit the stores. It’ll never be Moving Pictures for me (because that was my intro to Rush), but still love this album.

Yes, this was a very popular song. All of the guys in Rush grew up in the suburbs and all of them didn't feel like they fitted in.

This was written after the Permanent Waves and especially the Moving Pictures tours, when the guys realized they had a whole new devoted younger audience, of seemingly disaffected and awkward early teens, primarily male and suburban. Having grown up in the suburbs of Toronto himself, Neil wrote this as a tribute to that phenomenon of bored, neophyte suburban kids, trying to fit in with their peers in high school who get entranced by the bright lights of the city, go downtown to find excitement, and end up in dead-end cut-throat corporate jobs, eventually wondering how they got there, and start dreaming again about a future life back in the suburbs. It's depressing, if you really think about it, really, but it's dead accurate, and as much joy I've had taking the piss out of Neil Peart's hokey lyrics, these are some of his best, and most relevant, and well-timed for the band. It's not about "a dream of buying a house for you and the ones you love," it's about "Fuck! What Have I been doing down here? What did I give up?!" See Pink Floyd's "Dogs," etc.

Its a Rush classic for sure ! Maybe their most popular video too. Signals is considered as their first album synth 80's era. It was released in 1982. Watch the official video ! ;-)

This, Tom Sawyer, and Distant Early Warning are 3 of my favorite Rush songs. The first 2 songs off the album "Roll the Bones" (Dreamtime and Bravado) are also some of my favorites.
