Why have I not met a girl like this? Classic bands are so distinctive and Rush is among the greats. I started with 2112 and have gone backwards and forwards since then. The guitar that you speak of is a double neck and the drummer that you thought was so great I ounce watched play while his whole platform was tipped upward 90 degrees. Rush has an incredible play list but, the 1st side of 2112 is genius. The whole 1st side of the album is a story about a guitar that is found in the future and how it is viewed by the ruling priests of the temples of Syrinx. A little buzz adds to the experience.

I was initially disappointed you weren't watching the video of this song, with it's sprawling suburbs, malls, and kids in high school and cruising and having to conform to the norms, but you were so into the lyrics, you totally "got it", and the pictures you created in your own mind were perfect. There are many, but this is one of the most fun reactions you've ever done. Thank you!

It's great that you shouted out Neal Peart on drums because much of this song is in sevens and then of course it switches to straight 8 at times to give extra Focus. But he is so good at making these oddball time signatures work and make them appealing to the average listener. I loved the way your innate sense of Rhythm took over and you were easily able to physically move to it, a lot of people just get frustrated by the uneven nature of that kind of time signature. John Bonham of Led Zeppelin was also fantastic at this, but it just seems like Neil took it to a whole other level. Rest in peace to both of them. Two of my all-time favorite drummers.

To fully appreciate these three men as musicians is to watch them play in a live setting as a cohesive unit. Masters of the instruments they play, and friends that fully get each other on a human level. Geddy Lee, singer, bass guitarist, and keyboards, juggling all three on some songs and making it look easy. Neil Peart, The Professor, a walking metronome of percussive precision whose drumming is aspirational for most would-be drummers, with a poet's soul crafting lyrics of depth, honesty, and integrity. Alex Lifeson, guitarist extraordinaire, is stealthy in his abilities compared to other shredding ax wielders, but at the same time, he is so underappreciated. Watch their induction by Dave Grohl and the late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, the band's acceptance speeches, and the three-song set they play...and the real RUSH is there in all of their glory. Wacky, brilliant, gifted, and amazing. One of Canada's greatest gifts to the world was this band!

As you likely know, that is 3 guys making all that music. Now, when recording, Geddy Lee does one at a time, but in concert, he sings, would be playing the keyboards on this, and playing bass pedals. Also, this song has to do with alienation growing up. Neil Peart was a genius at lyrics, and draws on his own shyness and introversion. I think all 3 grew up in greater Toronto, and likely draws on their own history as teenagers.

the genius of RUSH is how they construct their songs and making odd time sound like common groove time - this intro opens in 7/8 odd time then shifts seamless into 4/4 common time but drums adds after beat within to the groove of backbeat 2 n 4 Alex's guitar has ska influence here then band accent hits which is 4:3 creates a time against time sounds. Of course the subject matter is genius how everyone can relate to this song life experiences - great job on breaking down a legendary musician's band

I grew up in a rural town where, let's just say,I didn't belong. A popular target for faraway laughter and jock bullying. I literally hated my life in that place. Only two things got me through it; my dreams of someday being a rock star on tour opening for Van Halen or AC/DC,and this particular song. I remember all of a sudden feeling like somebody was speaking to me when I heard this song. It was powerful. Drummer Neil Peart also writes most all the lyrics. He was a deep thinker and a huge reader. His vocabulary had no limit. In some ways this song gave me strength when I needed it most. Rush is a very intelligent band that just rocks like no other, and there's only 3 guys making it happen! And losing Neil was a hard blow to the world of music. I was a senior in HS when this song came out. I lived in a suburb of Dallas, TX. Garland, TX to be exact. We had 4 HS in Garland, and many "Subdivisions" of homes around those HS. Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist for the band, summed up HS so perfectly then. In our school, their was 5 cliques: The Socials (richer students who were considered the elite), The Jocks (self explained, Football, Basketball players, etc.), The Geeks (the brains of the school, the thespians, and outsiders, we didn't have the term Goth yet), The Freaks (heavy metal listeners, dope smokers, and mischief makers), and the Ropers (the skoal dipping, cowboy boot and wrangler jean wearing guys and girls-the girls didn't dip). If you weren't a social or jock, those 2 groups could intermingle, you were a cast out. Later in the 80's, John Hughes summed it up with the classic "The Breakfast Club".

I think I mentioned this in another reaction, but the drummer, Neil, lost his family in the 90's and took a break from Rush to ride his motorcycle around the world to deal with his grief. He wrote all of their lyrics and has always been an introvert. Losing his family made him more so.
