After growing up with three little sisters who were obsessed with ballet. And having to sit through endless recitals under the stern eye of my father. It was either grow to appreciate their efforts or learn to love bruises! Peace, Love, Merry Christmas.

How lovely. Thank you so much for reacting to this. Ballet is a brutal (on the dancer) and beautiful artform. I've taken dance all my life, studied in NYC where I've lived for over thirty years. I'm not a ballet dancer but if you take modern, Jazz, etc you are going to be exposed to some ballet warm ups etc. I've gone into classes with older women who were ballet dancers and have had to have multiple foot surgeries, suffer issues from overextension of their joints etc. This is something you give your life and body to if you dance at this level. Yes, pointe shoes are packed in the toe and are flat at the tip so you can balance. In class you generally use a soft slipper when you aren't specifically doing "pointe" work - I think this is true for the most part. I've been to the ballet at Lincoln Center many times with a friend of mine (she now lives in Ireland) and it's a great experience. You can see (if sitting close enough and know where to look) how their hands tremor with tension when one dancer is holding another who is en pointe in a difficult position. Everything is supposed to look effortless but here you can see the physical strength required. I have one question for you if you've made it this far.. Do drummers dance well? I would think they do since they have to have an innate sense of rhythm. Happy Holidays. I've been REALLY sick since Thursday night and don't seem to be getting better quite yet. Looking forward to the next reaction!

Hey JP, Merry holidays!! I was a ballet dancer until my late 20s, and danced on "en pointe" for most of it. In a company like Royal Ballet, each pair is made custom for each dancer's feet. I used to wear Freed, which is one of the oldest companies, and out of London. Freed is interesting because each "maker" has a symbol that they brand into a pair- so I used to seek out certain makers by trying to find their symbol when shopping for a new pair. A new pair of "toe shoes" needs to be worn in until they are form fitting, and the glue and packed material gets hammered and pressed by the dancer to fit their feet and needs. It's a bizarre ritual for each dancer, hand sewing, tearing apart parts of the shoes and pounding away until they were just right and ready to dance in. I also love that you spoke about how dance is an interpretation of the music by the body. Absolutely spot on. My body was my musical instrument and the art all stems from a love of music. Happy New Year!

The pointes are made of packed and glued paper, fabric, or cardboard.

An unusual and excellent choice, IMHO! There are a lot of well known tracks from Nutcracker that appear on various "highlights" CDs; this track is not normally one of them, but was great to watch and listen to, perhaps all the better for being lesser known, and of course an appropriate choice for today. Merry Christmas!

I'm a bit late, but this left-field selection caught my eye :) This's a wonderful piece, and from a ballet i've seen a number of times. I started to attend the ballet in the late 80's. I went for the music, but was quickly caught up in the whole experience, the dance, spectacle, it really draws you in. And even if you think maybe it's not for you, I'd recommend going at least once, and think you'd likely be pleasantly surprised. As someone with 2 left feet, to watch the levels of skill, grace and beauty, it's quite breathtaking. I've seen many shows, and a good number of companies. The Royal Festival Ballet (who became The English National Ballet), then TENB numerous times. The Moscow City Ballet, Scottish Ballet, The National Ballet of St. Petersburg (who I think have now changed their name). And a veritable supergroup of a ballet consisting of the stars of the Kirov, and Bolshoi. Yes, I'd definitely recommend giving ballet a try. And FTR, my favorite: Romeo & Juliet, Score by Prokofiev.

Hi Justin. Dave from London. Snowflakes Are Dancing! My late uncle was a big opera and ballet fan, and one Christmas he took me and other members of the family to the Royal Opera House here in London to see this ballet. I'm not much of a ballet fan myself but I love this music - Tchaikovsky is just a master of colour, drama and melody. Merry Christmas.

If you think about it, (I was hoping for some help from spell check). Was prog. He took old and new, combined them with respect and innovation, creating something that satisfied our need for familiarity and excitement.

I liked the offbeat hop as we ballet afficionados call it. Twerk Free zone too. Musically, I expected Jon himself to join in at the end Aaah Aaah ah ah ah. "God u know he wears a blue t shirt too with " God in Heaven" written on both sides" Hopefully u r gonna do the whole of Three Ships one day. Time, Justin, it's running out. Marvellous video BTW. ⌚🌸Diolch! Everybody Loves You but I love u a little bit more as someone once sang....😀

Great piece of music. What I don’t like is that the dancers constantly ‘wear’ a fake smile.
@JohnWhipp

@palantir135 - That may be your instant reaction, but what if I was to point out that this is just a small part of a performance that is more than 2 hours in total, and the overall performance conveys an entire story purely through dance, with no dialog. Those dancers will not "constantly wear a fake smile" for 2 hours; the smiles here will be a part of how the dancers are conveying this particular scene of the story through ballet (which takes place right at the end of the first half of the performance).
