Arthur is a legend in his own lifetime. Saw him at Glastonbury 2001, he opened with the line, "It's thirty years since I got banned from this place for burning down the stage"'.

A great rendition. The slightly unhinged, haunted vocals, the growling and ascending, swirling organ, great drums does it for me too. Totally in keeping with their sound and vision, image.

Hearing Arthur Brown's vocals is a good reminder: need to return to Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination sometime soon. Also, if you want to react to a really cool Screamin' Jay Hawkins song check out "Whistling Past the Graveyard".

The Screamin' Jay Hawkins version is incredible. He has done a special version for a French movie called “Peut-être” (with Jean-Paul Belmondo). Screamin' Jay Hawkins plays in it as leader of an orchestra. He is amazing. It's a Sci-Fi movie from 1999. One of my favorites.

Circa 1981 - I won tickets to the Rolling Stones Tattoo You Tour via mail in (the only way for the public to get tickets if I remember). I sent in 1 letter an won!!! My dad had to get the tickets from Madison Square Garden and as he was walking a way, someone offered him $250 for the pair. I wasn't a huge Rolling Stones fan, so I was semi-upset that he didn't sell them. Nonetheless, the opening act - Screamin' Jay Hawkins - did this song. It was very powerful and very theatrical. Glad my dad didn't sell those tickets. Oh yeah, that little band known as the Rolling Stones were pretty dang awesome! Have an amazing day all.

Have been an Arthur Brown fan since December 1967 and great they are still touring. So pleased help crowd fund and my name included on the Zim-Zam-Zim cover. Fire was the very first single ever bought and then after bought a record player to play it on. Saw The Crazy World of Arthur Brown at 'Rhythms of the World' including chatting to Arthur in Hitchin just a few years ago. Fans of all ages and was a big success. Also saw both Arthur Brown and Kingdom Come at the LSE in London back in the late '70's / early 80's. Last year bought the "Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come Eternal Messenger An Anthology 1970-1973" CD collection which includes tracks not released before. Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come album "Galactic Zoo Dossier" is still my number one favorite album. I crave music that is different, and that album is just that "very" different that would not to be to everyone's taste in music. What I love is finding AB's obscure albums, also his guest appearances, example with Alice Cooper, also Kula Shaker to name just two.

I really enjoyed the organ on that, lifts it to a whole other level. I had a look at the background to the recording in answer to your question and hadn't realised that Kit Lambert (producer and manager of The Who) produced this album along with Pete Townshend. Apparently Arthur Brown wanted the record to be a kind of concept album, whereas Lambert wanted to capture their live set, so I'm guessing 'I Put A Spell On You' was one they used to play live? According to Wikipedia they compromised and the record included some more conceptual stuff interspersed with material they played live.

I love this song. One of my hobbies is collecting different versions of this song. I have about thirty versions, including five very different ones by Screamin Jay and three very different versions by Arthur Brown (this one, the version with Crane on piano on the Chisholm In My Bosom album and a version with Kingdom Come as a guest artist, after he had officially left the band). I first heard the song via the Manfred Mann version. But it was the Crazy World version that inspired me to star collecting. In my opinion it’s the best cover of this song that I’ve ever heard. Annie Lennox did a great version as well and M.Diggo’s very 70s disco version is rather pleasing. I refuse to talk in any detail about the Marilyn Manson version. The most well known version is by Nina Simone. Controversially I have to say I’m not a huge fan, although it’s perfectly good in its own way. The problem for me is that so many other versions draw their inspiration from the Nina Simone arrangement and I find that rather boring. Screamin’ Jay never made much money from the original release despite it being one of the best selling singles in the US that year. He approached the record company and demanded to know why other less successful artists on the rosta were earning more than him. He was told, quite bluntly, “it’s because you’re black. Get used to it and get the f*** out of my office” or words to that effect. Hawkins was a famous womaniser. There are currently about 50 people who have been proven to be illegitimate children of Screamin Jay. The song came about when his then girlfriend found out about his two-timing adultery and walked into a club in the middle of his show and slammed her engagement ring down on the stage and stormed off. He wrote this song in response - effectively saying “you can’t leave me. You’re mine.” When the song was a hit and he became very well known she came back. He promised to stay faithful. He didn’t, of course, but made sure she never caught him out again!

Again I recommend Arthur Brown's next band: Kingdom Come. Their 2nd album (also entitled Kingdom Come) was a big favourite of mine in the 1970s. I'm not sure it is available any more. A worn old dusty vinyl original is up in my attic somewhere. Spirit of Joy is a good track off their third album, Journey.

There is a jazzier version of this by Angelina Jordan when she was 9yrs old (the one filmed in black and white), where she sounds like a 30 yr old channeling the original. Then, if you are impressed, you could go back to when at 7 yrs old she auditioned on Norway's Got Talent (which she won), singing Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" (There is a version with Eng. subs).

Hey JP from Ned n Janet in Spain. We were lucky enough to see Screamin Jay a couple of times and he was one amazing force of nature who put on an incredible show. A coffin, skulls, flash paper, hoodoo voodoo, with a bone through his nose wearing a cape and his crazy cane. Astounding and hilariously scary with a voice that shook your soul.

This is great! Of course, now that you've become a little bit familiar with the young version, I highly recommend checking out his 2014 released song (there's a video, too) called The Unknown. For the first time it occurs to me that there might be an unreliable narrator of the lyrics, here. He's saying "I put a spell on you," but quite clearly it's more a case of, "You put a spell on me." Certainly gives it a little twist if you read it that way. If you get in the mood for more spells, maybe try the kind that *Sleepytime Gorilla Museum* used to cast (using instruments of their own devising, too). kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaqleZ1nrdlrfK8

Play some Ralph Vaughan Williams. and have a *Vile Countdown* . Apologize for it. And then nevertheless carry on with it. And there's no hurry to start counting. A Vile Countdown is almost entirely made up of your beautiful and glorious corporation's inspiring Message. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX7GiIh6rZ2HrJY There are some excellent guidelines for _decorum_ given here. Why did he cover it? Well, having seen the video of SJH doing this, it's very like the general ambience/showmanship that Arthur Brown brings on stage and I'm sure that he means it as a homage to someone he respects and is very much influenced by. Rolling Stone magazine? Pfft. Amongst albums panned by RS on original release were Are You Experienced? Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Exile on Main Street and Nevermind. Always be reassured that your taste is way better than the US's premier rock magazine.

A rare beast this song. It's the only one I can think of were the original is the weakest version I've heard. Sorry, but Hawkins over the top vocal, and that 'parping' sax grate on me. Here we've a much better, 'jazzier' version, with a great vocal, and those fantastic keys riffing throughout. A great cover this, but as I say, most of them are. And so many versions: Nina Simone, Creedence CR, Annie Lennox, and my personal fave (till now, maybe) Joe Cocker's version.
