If I was capable of making a "top ten songs" list at my age (mid-GenX) this is one of the few that earned a spot on first listen and has never been knocked off the list, even after 31+ years since I first heard it.

The talent of this woman is phenomenal. How she’s not recognized as one of the most important artists of the last 30 years is criminal. An absolute gem and every bit as good a live performer as studio composer.

The “Nine Inch Nails” reference is a deliberate shout-out to Trent Reznor. (Who actually shows up on a later album.) “Little Earthquakes” is definitely a powerhouse album. Not every song hits as hard, but I would definitely not call any of them “fillers.”
@Ignatius1972
@Ignatius1972 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Tori put fillers on several loooooooong albums in her career, but not on Little Earthquakes, nor Under the Pink. After "from the Choir girl....." things (sometimes in, sometimes out) downhill, 8n my humble opinion

This such an amazingly powerful song channelling so much young female rage. Tori really excels at exploring the dark feelings that we all endure. And the instrumentation to back it up. You should check out one of her live versions of this song. Really amazing. And of course, the reference to Nine Inch Nails is fun because she duets with Trent Reznor on her second album with the song Past the Mission. I can't wait until you get to Tear In Your Hand, which is one of my all-time favorite break-up songs, mainly because she references her good friend Neil Gaiman.

I think it was a bit of a backlash to the hypersexualization of the 80s Madonna era. Tori Amos was a voice for abused bitter females.

She had "something" with Reznor, but Courtney Love put some evil spell into the whole thing and everything ended up. But after sometime, Tori and Reznor returned the friendship, they discovered the lies Courtney Love spread away were the main reason of their problems and had the beginning of the Amos "hate era" to Love. So, 'Professional Widow' is not about a celebrity couple. It's about a very personal issue Amos had (and has) with Mrs Cobain

Hi Justin, I'd love to see you react to some of of the songs from 'Boys for Pele'. Such a wonderful album - Hey Jupiter, Not the Red Baron, Past the Mission, Caught a Lite Sneeze, and Muhammed My Friend are my favourites. Under the Pink too is a great album. Baker Baker, and Bells For Her - BELLS FOR HER - one of the MOST AWESOME songs ever. Gonna have to go now and play it....

Yes, this album is definitely no filler. She was in a pop band that released an album (Y Kant Tori Read) before this. Although it’s pretty evident already, it makes it even clearer that her decision to ditch the band idea and base everything off of her piano and voice was the key. There are numerous B-sides, many of which are songs that were recorded for the album but left off, and those are all worth a listen after you finish the album proper.

Nine inch nails references Trent Reznor from nine inch nails. He sang backing vocals for Past the Mission on her album Under The Pink. They were a thing until they weren’t. Courtney Love was interested in Trent and messed things up. Professional Widow is about Courtney and her dad. Also…Closer To God Trent references Tori. Her father is a preacher.

Seeing another track from this album is always a welcome sight and makes me want to dive right in. This album is great throughout, but some of the best tracks are to come. I mentioned them a few days back but I have to mention them again since lately, whenever I hear a female vocalist, I've been consumed by the band Solstice who in early 2021 added a very distinctive female vocalist and instrumentalist who you've got to hear. Their live track "A New Day" is, to me, a must see. The version from Craufurd from 2021 is the one to see. The song starts out simple enough but just gets better and better for 7 minutes. My new favorite band, for sure. It is a bit proggy but when the keys and violin come in, the song takes off with its layers of sound.

This makes me think of what *Andy Edwards* (he has a great KZbin channel) says about how he finally reached the point where he "got" Joni Mitchell: Simple story: He started paying attention to the lyrics. I think the same would hold for Tori Amos. To get what she's about, you have to listen to what she's saying. (I'm a bit "lyrics-deaf", as Andy puts it, so I miss lots, but I think I heard enough here to get me started. Was curled up by the fire, snoring, dreaming of that night where we all howled at the Moooooon by that lake with the deer that taste so much nicer, and then my ears pricked up nice and sharply, and I woke up.) I give you permission to play more of her music. :D

You're also allowed to listen to *Cardiacs* - although you might have to do so in utter secrecy if it's Jim who's singing, and there's a tiny spice of chaos spin-drying as ye go. (For instance, in the very quick *Food On the Wall* kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJLLomeXh7tsaKs) (It does have a beautiful lyrics to go with it, though, so you could even sing along if you go to a secret enough place to play it.)

the easy assumption I feel is to look at the nine inch nails as a reference to the band and Trent, but because she is a minster's daughter and there are so many references to Christianity in a lot of her music, I always believed she was saying nine inch nails as in the actual spikes that were used to crucify Jesus.
@leashacarey9106
@leashacarey9106 Жыл бұрын
Definitely a song of willingly accepting degradation of the female as a plaything and her coming to realize her self worth (but still pissed about not only how boys treated her, but she allowed it.) And Nine Inch Nails is not only a religious reference (daughter of a Methodist pastor), but a shout out to Trent Reznor whom she would duet with on in her next album.
