For me, Joni is *the* greatest singer-songwriter of all - and this one of her half dozen or so best songs. The music is simply exquisite: the gorgeous melody, the lush chord changes, the sumptuous arrangement (when the strings come in at the start of the second verse, my heart gives a sigh). And the words, pure poetry, delivered with utter mastery. Every second of this song and performance is perfect.

So glad you love this track Justin. When I hear this whole album I feel like I should be listening to it lying in a wheat field,on a warm Summers day,gazing at the blue sky as the sound washes all around me .

Her post Blue albums, from For The Roses to Hejira, are the peak of Joni's songwriting genius. Blue gets the accolades, and it's certainly an album that most songwriters can only dream of writing, but Joni's absolute masterpieces are the albums, each one a masterpiece in its own right, that come after it.

I've heard this song many times, but I suddenly made the Gone With The Wind connection when I heard Joni mention the southern belles, Clark Gable and the main Scarlett character. One of my younger sisters has had a lifelong obsession witth GWTW, so I did get to see the film, which is mainly about a woman's personal struggles. I like how that story mingles with Joni's distinctive crooning vocals - a very surreal dreamlike experience.

First to sing praises of Joni. The greatest songwriter of all time.

A word of warning JP: when you get to The Boho Dance, this one goes straight into the next one, Harry's House/Certerpiece. Hissing is the most sophisticated of all her albums. As she said in an interview, on this record she cut her players "some slack". This string arrangement, and the finale in particular is absolutely amazing.

Joni is on another level than all of her contemporaries. There’s no one better. This song is a masterpiece.

Please don't worry, Justin! I'm in my late fifties and I have never watched "Gone with the Wind" either! It has been nice to listen along to this album with you. My vinyl copy of "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" is very scratchy, so I don't play it as much as I should. I have just listened to a beautiful new song by British folk singer, Katherine Priddy, called "Close Season". The song has a great vocal performance by Katherine and a very wintery lyric by poet, Simon Armitage. It would definitely make a a great listen on the channel at this time of year!

This album just has got a lot of class. I haven't - because I haven't ever watched 'Gone With The Wind' either.

The lady was magic. I am so happy that she recorded so much of life. As an old fart, I'm not sure where cinematic became a good thing, but there is no doubt that the soundscape she created was superb.

Wow... you're stepping away from AM radio hits. Joni's FOR THE ROSES and HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS are two favorites although they receive barest of support outside her fanbase. I consider HISSING to be her great Film Album, with songs essentially create films, one after another. It's a fantastic voyage. It's worth months of listening, and for me, decades. Plug it in and take off for world's seldom visited.

_The Hissing Of Summer Lawns_ is the godlike masterpiece that people traditionally believe _Blue_ to be. ...and you're not missing anything with _Gone With The Wind_ - it's trash. Popular trash, but trash nonetheless.

This woman is a goddess of Music. I'm sure her lyrics are poetry, but honestly, I never really listen much to her lyrics. I just release myself to it and go with her flow.

A great song on one of the best albums I have ever listened to. I love Blue but I think Hissing Of Summer Lawns is better. edited to add that I have seen Gone With The Wind. It was popular and I guess seeing it will give context to the song and to a certain view of American history but if you never see it, you will not be missing that much.

Compressed Vinyl grooves and bad pressing hindered my appreciation of the coda when i tried to dig this song. Today i walked on a cloud. Other lost songs for cloud walkers inc. 1. Jerry Burns - Pale Red 1992 2. Judie Tzuke - I'll Be The One 1985 3. Toni Childs - I've Got To Go Now 1992 Chairs Justin. It's a "dog eat dog" remember! Unless u got Joni & Michael in yer cans to remind u otherwise.

Some people don't like GWTW because they consider it racist. But if you miss this one, you're missing a great performance by Hattie McDaniel, not to mention Vivien Leigh's. At this point in life, VL was one of the most beautiful women around
@bobholtzmann3 күн бұрын
And both Hattie and Vivien won Best Supporting and Lead Actress at the Academy Awards, with the Best Film and Director included for that year. Vivien Leigh's film career would always be centered on this film.

You've never seen Gone With The Wind? Frankly, my dear Justin, I don't give a damn!😉 I haven't either, apart from the odd bit when it's been on tv when I've turned it on.
