I've been a hobby sewist for five years now and I reached the stage where I sew almost everything either with a white or a black thread - I don't mind and no one ever commented on such a tiny mismatch. Great work on your pile - lots of fun to watch these!
@mackenziesapphire75543 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't do anything in black and white, but honestly, when the seem won't be visible and I don't want to buy a matching color, I mostly just use whatever's in my machine already - or that one purple thread that I bought for one project and won't ever use again for anything anyways

My mom is very into sewing as she grew up in East Germany when you couldn't get a lot of stuff but also especially stylish clothes if you weren't of average size in my mom's case she was always very skinny so she just made her own stuff. I grew up watching her and helping as much as I could at the age I was so now I'm 29 and always repairing clothes for people because many of my friends barely even know how to sew on a button. I also do teach them because I personally think it's way better to show them so they can do it again on their own instead of them again having to wait until someone who can do it has time to do it for them. I also have many friends who are into cosplay and explaining and showing them how to use a sewing machine and how to use patterns is always a fun time. I just got a new really cool and really cheap secondhand fake velvet jacket that was so cheap because some of the seams in the lining are either barely hanging on or have opened completely. The lining fabric isn't falling apart though so it's actually quite an easy fix it just takes some time. Took that project out while watching your video but I definitely haven't finished with the video, still always nice to sew along with someone else.

I cleared my 2-ish year "project pile" this summer in preparation for a move - I told myself there was no way I was going to pack any clothes with holes in them. The longest part was reteaching myself how a sewing machine worked...which wouldn't have been a problem if I just used it every few months as projects came up 🤦♀️ it was probably 45 minutes of sewing, another hour of problem solving, and then years worth of mental baggage just disappeared back into my wardrobe to be worn for years to come! Some of the repairs were honestly hack jobs but they're all wearable & nobody has ever noticed but me.

Love to see this Leena! I've been mending my clothes for a while and my one tip would be that preventative mending is best for the thigh/crotch holes. The second I see a hole developing, I enforce the fabric with some hand stitching or add a patch so it never gets to exist in the first place!

I mean mostly while watching I ran around the house being late and getting my shit together, but I love your sewing videos Leena because I come from a family who can actually sew and are perfectionists and I can't work a sewing machine so I never have any confidence in trying repairs so it's nice to see someone more like me doing it!

I actually just tackled my repair pile a week ago but I'm happy to see other people doing it as well! Most of my repairs were for pajama shirts and pants (because during the stuck-at-home times these see the most washes). I don't have a serger so I just zigzag stitched the areas where the threads came loose with my sewing machine, except for one pair of pants that I had to both zigzag , straight stitch and top stitch to make sure the hole in the crotch didn't rip open again.

Hey ! It's really comforting to share these moments with you ^.^ ! I also have strong fabric eating thighs and a much loved 3E jean from H&M from 2012... I patch it a whole lot amount of times with the japanese sashiko technique. So I love it more and more and more, it's really pretty (quite sloppy so it doesn't fit for work... ) and I think you might like the *aesthetic* ... But beware, it's time consuming and sown by hand.

It's so fun seeing you learning my hobby! For super thick things like the jeans, I recommend using a thimble to save your poor fingers :) (Abby Cox has a great video on how to use a thimble). Also, to avoid having to sew through 5 layers of fabric, you could bring the needle in at an angle to do a whip/felling stitch (Bernadette Banner has great videos on basic hand stitches like these) so that you only need to go through the top layer or two of the denim instead of all of them. That homemade dress was such a good second-hand find! Happy mending :)
