My true pain and villain origin story is that they were so protective of Meadows through that 2013-15 run, refusing to deal him when they could have desperately used another starter or bullpen arm. To then give him ~50 games before shipping him out the door in the worst trade of all time is most Pirates thing that could ever happen.

Especially since teams like the Pirates have to guard their prospects. That literally is the only avenue they have to get better. For years, they were untouchable and for them to then give away the entire store at one time for Chris Archer is just the most baffling thing ever. It is like not drinking for years and everyone complimenting you for your will power, then you throw it all away on one bender.

Great video! One thing I would add about the 2014 Wild Card game is about that Grand Slam. It’s one of the most fascinating home runs to listen to, because the Pirates fans are practically screaming their heads off, the place is deafening, you couldn’t hear yourself think if you were in that stadium… and then Crawford hits the ball, and the place goes silent. You can practically hear individual people talking on the broadcast, it’s just the most eerie thing ever. Just one of the most epic “silencing the crowd” moments, you could tell that everyone in the stadium knew that the whole damn season was over at that moment…

There was a similar moment in the mid-80s after the Pirates turned the corner following the drug trials. The Bucs were within striking distance of the Mets in June, and the Mets had come to town for a three-game series. On a spur of the moment, I bought a ticket in the upper deck behind home plate. The Pirates led by a run going to the top of the 9th and brought on their hammer, Jim Gott to close it out. He got the first two outs and had gotten two strikes on Howard Johnson. We were going nuts screaming and rocking Three Rivers Stadium to pull for the last strike… and then Johnson took the ball for a ride. Tie game. I never heard a crowd become so silent so fast. The Pirates had runners in scoring position in both the 9th and 10th innings but couldn’t get the winning run across. The Mets scored in the top of the 11th, but the Bucs went down quietly. The momentum swung the Mets way and the Pirates stumbled the rest of the season.

The Pirates aren't so awful every year that they rarely win. I mean, typically then end up around .500, give or take a few. But they're mired in mediocrity, have an owner who couldn't give a single, tiny fuck about the on field success and only recently finally rid themselves of an abysmal era that lasted far beyond it's best days. I grew up just outside of Pittsburgh and can hardly remember their good seasons as they're interwoven with so many bad ones during my 32 years of life but I can say that odds of seeing a win are about 50/50. The nice thing, just like Camden Yards, is even if they suck the stadium is just a sight to see. It wasn't nearly as nice back in the Three Rivers stadium, but PNC park is absolutely stunning.

I was introduced to sports through video games, and the Pirates’ ratings were always at the bottom lol (along with the hometown Tigers). I always knew them as the bad team, and it made me wanna see them do good. I never liked seeing the same teams always doing good. I was rooting for them when they had their playoff runs in 12-15. Disappointing nothing came from it. Would be cool to see them get something going. Upper management can be a major team killer & my Tigers are trying to figure that out right now. Would love to go back to PNC. Even Pittsburgh is great, the mountains & water surrounding a big city was surreal. Michigan is so flat & boring in comparison lol

@@MattLemonsackMusic Hey I got into sports much thanks to video games too. I mean, I played sports as a kid and into my young adulthood but I didn't follow them on TV or the stats. But thanks to playing NCAA Football, Madden and NHL I got into following sports for real. Changed into a huge NFL and NHL fan but baseball was never something I was big on. Unfortunately in no small part because my hometown team has done so poorly during my 32 years of life. They've been trapped in this middle of the road, pretending they can develop a world series team but they've been awful at developing state of being. The management wouldn't trade assets when they were worth the most and would demand so much that their value would tank before finally trading them. They did that for years and years and we're really hoping the new management will change that. Though I don't follow them really so I can't say I've been keeping up. I just know Bob Nutting is a miserly owner, he won't invest in the team in hopes of growing their appeal and reach. He just wants to make a profit so keeps payroll low or at least preferred it that way with Neal Huntington. But I can totally relate to wanting to see an underdog succeed. That's something I've done in every sport. The Pirates hopefully will one day improve back to their 70's relevance but nobody in the Pirates sphere of fandom expects anything anymore. They just wait to see improvement. Or at least 99% of them do. I remember watching the Bengals last year, even as a Steelers fan and being well aware of the heated rivalry they share, being thrilled to see the underdog Bengals make it to the Super Bowl. It's always something I cheer for. It's why I cheer for the Toronto Maple Leafs after the Pittsburgh Penguins. While they're not really underdogs anymore as they've assembled a talented team, they can never get out of the first round of the playoffs and their fans haven't had a championship since 1967. I hope the Tigers get back to relevance too and win another series in honor of Mike Illitch. He always wanted them to win one under his ownership, even if he didn't manage things properly. And considering what he did for the Red Wings, it would have been so cool if they'd have won one while he was still around. Also, I too appreciate Pittsburgh's beauty. It absolutely is a fairly under rated charming city. But I'm sure Detroit has plenty to like and it's a lot easier to see the beauty of something from an outside perspective. Which is why I try to keep my perspective on sports neutral and not go too far into a homer mind set.

@@adamg7984 I played soccer as a little kid, but ended up loving hockey because of NHL. Ironically it was the only sport I didn’t end up playing lol. I actually picked all my favorite teams through the games because picking the home team seemed too easy, I wanted to pick my own. Stayed loyal too lol The situation with Pirates’ ownership seems similar to the Lions. Except the trades like the ones in this video are more unique to baseball & an easier way to throw away success. The Lions’ failures have resulted in all kinds of conspiracies with the Fords lol. I’d imagine that happens with any constantly losing team. I was hoping for the orioles to actually get a playoff berth this year, but we still got Mariners which is really cool to see. Except the Tigers now have the shared longest drought in AL… The Wings & Tigers were powerhouses when I was growing up (didn’t get really into baseball until I played it in 05 so I didn’t experience the early 00’s Tigers lol) so it’s weird that they’re the underdogs now. At least my other teams (Avs and Braves) have spoiled me lol. I miss the local playoff atmosphere; I took it for granted lol. I’d like to see the Leafs do well too. It’s fun to laugh at how they’re seemingly cursed, but their fans deserve a payoff lol. I was rooting for the Panthers in the Eastern conference this year but that was disappointing.

As a Braves fan, I've been telling people for a couple years now, that I really feel for fans of both the Pirates and Reds franchises. Both being good are good for baseball especially when you consider their rich history. Remember that each has 5 (FIVE) rings, and the Pirates last won in 1979! That's a pretty big deal when you think about the fact that most teams don't even have 1 or 2, and the Braves just won their 4th last year. I guess my second team would be the Reds since my Grandparents on my dad's side were from Ohio and I would always wear a Reds hat when I was just a wee lad. The problem is that both franchises have been essentially run into the ground by bad FO decisions and/or complete apathy with regard to fielding a good product. And it's sad. I especially feel for Reds fans because their owners really don't give a crap at all.

@@closethockeyfan5284 Passive-aggressive much? I don't claim to have all the answers. I'm just saying that those 2 teams being good is good for baseball (in my opinion) because of their rich history. It takes owners who care about winning, a strong farm system, and a GM who knows what the heck he's doing. Sort of like the Braves and Anthopoulos. Not really rocket science. The Braves have always been middle of the pack in salary/payroll over the years but they know how to maneuver and generally make very smart business decisions with regards to players and trades. Does it take more than the Pirates and Reds are currently spending? Absolutely. They just have the wrong people at the helm. And it's certainly not *all* about money. Just ask the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, and Phillies about that. There's absolutely no reason why the Reds or Pirates can't be good again, but as mentioned in my OP, it comes down to the front office.
@closethockeyfan5284
@closethockeyfan5284 2 жыл бұрын
@@HomeStudioBasics Sure, let me ask the Yankees and their zero losing seasons this century, the Dodgers and their so many recent division crowns and easy playoff berths I lost track, and teams from the NL East are moot because they're all big markets, even if Miami doesnt function like one for the Marlins (though because of that they have also been stuck in futility, to my point). In the same way, most teams in the Central divisions are small markets, which explains how teams from those divisions poke through, though even there the sustained dominance years of Detroit and St. Louis (which functions like a big market in baseball and always has) can't be denied. The Braves spend middle to upper, and they can afford to get in the top 10 when making a push. Pirates and Reds can't make the top 15. The successes like Tampa Bay and (until recently, because it wasn't financially viable anymore) Cleveland are the exceptions, the anomalies, not the rule. Small markets need to be darn near perfect and stay within a budget, whereas the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, etc. can blow $20M+ per on half a lineup and have them all suffer bad injuries or performance problems without batting an eye. Braves can take on at least one, probably two of those. Pirates and Reds torpedo their windows if they try that just once and it blows up, doomed to irrelevance or at least uncompetitive mediocrity for several years. Yankees, Dodgers, etc. don't even understand the concept of windows because they can perpetually compete by waving their dollars. And I wonder who's able to invest the most in the best staff and R&D surrounding the teams. Absolutely ridiculous to insist the money isn't the foremost determining factor, that anyone losing is merely incompetent. It's statistically proven as a stronger correlation of dollars to wins than any other major pro team sport in the country, and it's not close. Big markets can sell out virtually every game. Small markets struggle to sell out weekdays even when they *win!* Just look at aforementioned Cleveland and Tampa Bay--and no, the Trop's problems are not so far gone that people would be unwilling to watch great baseball. There sinply are not enough. "Absolutely no reason," give me a break. There are 300 million on the Dodgers alone. The chasm between haves and have-nots grows increasingly mammoth each year, painfully clear to many people who got fed up with the lack of parity and tuned out. I don't blame them--why waste their time when MLB clearly wants to maintain this system as long as possible? People will watch guys fiddle with their batting gloves and call time every pitch across three-plus hours if their team has any chance, but the mirages continue to be fewer and fewer. It's not the pace of play or three true outcomes or foul balls. Big markets have attendance as strong as ever. The problem is the disparity, so unmissable in the hurting franchises that people give up.

Edit: Hey man, so I got some nostalgia from the name Francisco Cabrera, so I looked up his stats, you know better than I do but I think a video on his 1992 12 game run of his 238 OPS+ could be a really good video topic. Have a good night mate :)

Everyone acts like the Archer trade killed the team. It didn't. So they traded a pitcher and a position player that they probably wouldn't end up signing anyway to try ant get a proven starter. The fact that they didn't sign any of the other pitchers (Volquez, Happ, etc) and got little value for many subsequent trades are what really derailed them.

I disagree, all sorts of examples that have done little (if any) more despite much larger markets and more favorable circumstances. White Sox and Padres until recently went through failed spree after failed spending spree, which the Mariners have kept doing--never even made the five-team playoff format, if I recall correctly. I'd definitely put the Mariners at the top. Rangers and Angels have run their teams into the ground year after year also, despite enormous cash flow, and one of them has arguably the two most electrifying superstars in the game! Tigers look like they might've come short on their rebuild; what have they done lately? Royals have done very little over the same span outside of the two years in the World Series. One could easily argue they had the luck while the Pirates didn't (see 2013-15 St. Louis Cardinals). That's really the only difference. What in the world are the Rockies and Reds doing, for that matter? Where is any semblance of success from the Marlins since their last Series win almost two decades ago?

As a life long pirates fan this video brings a lot of pain lol. The funny part is Huntington always said they'll spend the money on players once the team was ready to compete..every year since the wild card loses their payroll did not go the correct way. Cherrington seems to have the team heading in the right direction but that remains to be seen.

@@justmaxproductions you are correct about that and it still holds true to this day. BUT that's where they could have spent their money. They could have had a solid lineup had they not traded them all away and spent their money on pitching. I could go through the list of terrible hitters they have replaced guys like Cutch, Marte, Walker, Harrison, Meadows, and Bell with but I dont want to take myself into that dark place lol

@@checkadime8779 The guy literally said before the draft he was going to be a Yankee the first chance he got. Nobody was going to have him beyond Year 6. That ensured his trade value remained at the sole two years of control. Musgrove turned out pretty well. Feliz fell off. Moran had some value but then tapered off from sheer slowness. Martin couldn't quite make the leap. It's odd because at the time Feliz and Martin were called the best pieces of the deal. It was insufficient value mainly because it was dispersed over four players, but a fleecing it was not. People also like to downplay that Cole was coming off a very unimpressive year.

The mistake was them being under the current ownership group. You cannot sum up the past 20 years of my life as a pirates fans other than "oh look talent in the farm system, it would be a shame if we...traded them for draft picks." How many years until we can stop trading for futures. I have seen a total of trye 3 playoff contender years, and they weren't even really contenders. God, why do the worst teams have the best ballparks tho.
@warlordofbritannia
@warlordofbritannia 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not just that they traded for a fading Archer. It’s not just that they gave up Cutch’s heir Andrew Meadows in doing so. But they also gave up Tyler Glasnow and Shane Baz. Archer would post an ERA of nearly 5 in 172 innings as a Pirate. Meadows made the 2019 All Star Team, finished 14th in MVP voting that year and 20th in 2021. Glasnow has struck out 12.2 per 9 across 268 innings in Tampa and posted an ERA nearly two runs lower than Archer. Baz only has 40 innings in the majors but has already proved to be as electric as Glasnow. So, the one time Huntington traded the farm it backfired spectacularly...I can’t tell if that’s irony or a self-fulfilling prophecy.
