Big Block Mopar 400: Studying Signs of an Engine’s Old Life

Anytime I can score a Big block Mopar and Transmission, I jump on it! I was able to trade with a friend of mine on this engine combo. The issue was that he wasn’t sure if the engine still ran and functioned properly when pulled. In this video, I study the evidence of the engines previous life, without ever pulling a valve cover. Next time we see if this engine can light off!

Looks to be a well serviced engine. Maintenance items replaced (wp/t-stat etc) oil looks like oil. Appears to be a good deal. I remember when the 400's came out and got kicked around as crappy smog motors. Little did most guys know that Ma MoPar had a winner under the hood of a lot of cars and trucks. Wasn't a fault of the basic design, it was mostly due to emissions. The 400's had big shoes to fill after the reputation the 383 had built. Looking forward to your plans and goals with it.

Just pulled my 400 out of my 65 Coronet, putting in the 383. The 400 wasn’t broken, still ran okay, last year at the track I had a few 6500 shifts. After the transplant of the 383, I’m going to Mopar Joe KZbin college and attempting my first engine rebuild 👍🏻. Thanks Joe for always having very interesting and relevant content.

You completely passed over the most impressive part! Out of the couple hundred B/RB's Ive pulled I have only seen THREE of those factory "vacuum amplifier" cans (vac boosters). Hopefully that thing is still working because it seriously helps out with large lumpy cams. Couple things worthy of mention: most important is the -3 at the end of the casting indicating it being in the 3rd run of the mold. That block ought to be pretty squared up. Next is the intake, biggest issue with 400's is the garbage exhaust recycling 'lean burn' bs. Chucking that intake for literally anything else would be the biggest improvement. Lastly being that bent 346 fan. If you couple the hayden 2947 with the 346 fan you end up with more magic cooling than ANY aftermarket fan out there!

Well, now you have got me all curious Joe. I had a 1978 Dodge Magnum with the 400 lean burn engine. Bought the car brand new. The car itself was beautiful, Charcoal Gray Sunfire Metallic with factory T-tops. I wish I knew then what I know now about Chrysler 400s. I pulled it out and put in a fresh 440 with 906 heads, forged crank ,rods and pistons. It had 10.5 to 1 CR, dual exhaust, 3:55 posi and lots of other goodies. Ran like a raped ape! A stroked 400 (451?) is a mean mother with gobs of torque. I can't wait to see it tore down to the bones. You could have a real gem.

If I had a choice of building a 383 or 400, I would take a late 400 every time. Bigger bores shrouded the valves less, the block had stiffening ribs in the sides, and the main bearing girdles were much thicker between the cam and crank journals. I think almost double if I remember right. A common misconception, is that the late blocks were cast thin. They weren't, and most actually had thicker, more consistent cylinder walls.

Yeah, that's my favorite big block Chrysler engine, .020" bigger bore than even a 440,,, largest bore of any Chrysler engine ever produced... I was once going to build one of those, but with a set of 440 4bbl. connecting rods on the 400's stock stroke, so it'll have the 2.0 rod ratio, = super high revving, superior durability. Then use a set of Ross custom forged pistons. Then have the whole complete rotating assembly professionally balanced, to make it all work, perfectly...

Engine is years old. Certainly had water pump and thermo replaced. - I imagine it has been into a few times. - Replacement oil pump would draw questions. Sooo, 451 low deck Big Block?

Good to see the 400 get some love. I've got a 400 that I pulled out of a 3/4 ton truck (76' I believe) at least 15 years ago. It did run. I know it would be a good builder. I've considered building it for my challenger.

They’re overlooked too often. I have some plans with this one. Mostly as a precursor to the bad boy 400 that I’m picking up from Ed’s machine. Nice comparison from stock to wild.

@@JustMoparJoe Man. That’s wild. I was always told big blocks wouldn’t fit in an A Body unless you cut pieces out. I have a 74 Dart Sport myself, although I’m more of a small block fan anyway so I’ll stick with my 360

Just get it through your head that the old wives tale of thin wall mopar big blocks is not true in fact later 70s blocks were stronger in critical places but a little bit softer on hardness of the iron.... I'm going to buy an affordable sonic thickness tester just to test the 17+ blocks I have that range from 70 to 78.
