I bought the Sammy. Love it. Then, after a few months, bought the tools, the double domed crystal, lumed bezel and a strap code clasp. I have spent more than I would have if I'd just bought the Zelos. But...I can tinker now and make this Samurai MY Samurai. At least thats how I'm justifying it. Interesting comparison. Just one note I think the percentage is about 73% vs 79% not 75% and 77%. Also with this comparison I think you also need to add a category such as availability. If you add this Zelos will get 0 and Seiko will get 10. The problem with zelos is when you go to buy a watch they are sold out. I.e. the Zelos GMT.

Good showdown. However should be at least a draw imo! Why?: 1. Lume - according to your video the Samurai lume lasts longer! Zelos bias perhaps? 😉 2. Price : Seiko wins! Why? Their brand Cachet as you said is much better. If people (including Mr JOMW😉) are willing to pay a substantial amount of cash for say an Oris diver with a printed dial and basic Sellita movement partly because of the Oris name and Swiss reputation and ‘feel’ that they are paying a reasonable price then I think it’s only fair that Seiko should be afforded a little indulgence when it comes to brand value too. Therefore $399 for an ISO certified dive watch from one of, if not THE leading dive watch producers in the world (proven professionally over many decades) should mean that Seiko win the price category hands down! I agree about the Hardlex btw - they should at least have a sapphire option and charge $20 less for Hardlex (for those purists who don’t want sapphire on a diver). Hardlex lets their watches down. Enjoyable video as always!

So it takes two to match up on a samurai, also you call them both divers but only one is certified so yeah seiko has the assurance of its water resistance. You also are using a more expensive version of the zelos but all samurais are made the same with lume, so if you want good lume you pay more in zelo. And in the looks department again you use the more expensive zelo but the save the ocean or the great white samurai look so much better that the zelo and aren't that much more expensive than an orange samurai.

I love Seiko. I have Rolexes, omegas, one patek, but the Seiko is what I look at on my wrist and say, THAT is lovely. But! The hardlex, the misaligned chapter ring, the inconsistency with bezel ratchet across the models(I have three turtles, with a different bezel ratchet over the three of them.) You can virtually see Seiko like to cut corners. That's one area where micro brands flourish, they constantly churn out the same quality, and attention to detail across their models. Because they want to satisfy their customers. If you don't get that same quality, then there's a issue somewhere. Whereas, Seiko. You get a good watch, from a faceless company, that will randomly give you a good watch. But God, they make lovely watches to look at.

As always, great informative and entertaining video. I would have rated the Seiko more harshly in the X-Factor. With Seiko, it is always a gamble whether or not you get misaligned bezel insert or chapter ring. That is one reason I now look elsewhere for my affordable diver fix.

Regarding pricing, I think one thing to keep in mind is that large companies like Seiko who sell through traditional retailers need to feed the sellers: 30-50% of the price goes there. Smaller companies who sell directly to the customer online, can pretty much keep everything they take. I think this may explain some of the spec differences like sapphire vs hardlex, ceramic bezel vs aluminum. As the watch market is probably contracting, at some point even large companies may jump in the direct to consumer boat and rely on internet publicity to sell their wares.

It's interesting how hard it is to find wide shots of watches on wrist. Seeing the Samurai on your wrist at the 0:53 mark shows that the watch looks just fine, size-wise, to my eye. Most wrist shots focus on the watch details, not how it looks as part of a whole.

I own the orange Seiko shown here and I have to say it’s just fucking cool, man. It wears great and you feel cool walking around with it on your wrist. Extremely legible, practical and robust. But in my experience, pressed clasps are way more comfortable than milled clasps. The milled, no matter what brand, always pinch me. I have a Zelos Skyraider Bronze with the blue dial and it’s a great watch but unfortunately all other Zelos watches look like prototypes to me.

Come on Jody, a brand that has been around for decades v's a brand that is a couple of years old with a difference of 3 points. Don't think so. I'm not a Seiko fan boy, have bought numerous Chinese specials on your recommendation. I understand the Scot in you ( I'm one too) can see the value in the Zelos but I'd gladly have my 2nd gen orange monster (hardlex, hollow end links etc) over this any day of the week. Also, 200m ISO certified v's 300m on only their say, call it a draw. Really!!

Seiko also includes dealer margin.. If zelos sold through dealers with same base Mark up. It would sell for $1000-1200.. so essentially a $450 vs 1200 watch.... Seiko has to sell through distrbution channels due to sheer market share..

You should add another category to your list, the value of the watch on the used market. There are a lot of people, like me, who tend to by their watches used. You can get even more bang for your money buying a gently used Samurai. If that were to be included on this comparison. The seiko would get a couple more points added to its total.

I bought and sold that exact Samurai. I now own a Zelos Swordfish. The Swordfish is a much better size, the newer Zelos bracelet is miles better than anything Seiko has. Plus the dial is cooler and mine has the steel bezel. I missed my Samurai, sold it because it was a little big, glad I bought the Zelos, reminds me so much of that watch with upgrades.

All mineral crystals will get scratches regardless of what the manufacturers imply. I bought one beater with a mineral crystal that was inset below the dial and it still got scratched. Since most gents who buy a dive watch are desk divers, wouldn't it make better sense to have a sapphire crystal?

you rate Zelos very high, no problem in that you favour Zelos. Look at the dial which in the end every one looks at dial and that makes or breaks the watch Seiko takes it in spades. X factor Seiko 9 Zelos maybe what 5 Seiko wins.

Having had a look now at the Zelos site I have to say I'm very much taken by the black sand and bronze NH35....very taken...where's my wallet?

Should I go the safe and standard Seiko route, look into some of the entry level Swiss options like Steinhart, or consider a micro brand like Zelos? Who thinks the zelos disappeared while the seiko was still glowing away? I've got the blue faced one which I love. The fine waffle pattern adds an extra dimension. The Samurai also has a great feel to the bezel and a date function.

The only thing, the availability of the watches is a very important point, as of now, I can't order a Zelos swordfish as they all sold out, and they are more expensive on ebay....You can have a samurai very easily on Ebay or Amazon at anytime, for a better price than retail. Watched this one a few times but just noticed totals are 66 & 71, thought perhaps it was due to percentage points out out nine categories with possible perfect ten in each, but that didn't work either...likely a product of Scottish Arithmetic or just editing ;) I managed to grab a new Swordfish 40 in the gray sand with date before they sold out in eight hours, looking forward to receiving that one. I actually have both Samurais and Swordfish. I like them both. It’s interesting that Zelos went from a ratcheting clasp to a double foldover clasp. Usually it’s the other way around. I actually ordered the full lume version. Seiko is getting a lot of criticisml lately. Mostly for bad QC and constantly increasing prices. The Samuri is still reasonable but you bring up some great points. It a microbrand was to release a diver for $335 with mineral crystal they would get torn apart. Seiko does it and everyone is fine.

I think the main secret is price. I just bought a Seiko King Turtle Manta Ray edition for a much cheaper price on Amazon! My eyes couldn't believe it! Except for the clasp and the controversial ciclop, I'm sure the Kings did well this time, sapphire and ceramic bezel. In Mexico regular price for this watch is around 600 USD. Too much. But for one day, I found it on 400! Of course in less than one hour was sold out! So, that' my point. As long as price is justifiable, a watch is becomes the perfect watch.

C'mon Jody, the "Save the Ocean" dial is gorgeous. It appears to be selling very well by the different editions being offered and can be had at the same price you paid for this seiko. The dial score of that watch should beat the Zelos. But your other criticisms of the Seiko are spot on. Seiko iirc offered more sapphire crystals back in the day than they do now.

Managed to grab myself a Samurai PADI a couple of weeks back brand new from Goldsmiths jewellers for £175. Still not sure what they were doing dropping it from £429 all the way down but I won’t complain, certainly no issues with the watch. Now I want a Zelos too!

Come on Jodi there's certain things your highlighting and there's certain things your not paying much attention to Seiko's history in watches vs Zelos and you mark it 9-6 the Zelos should have got a 5 at most. Then there's the fact of the Samurai being ISO dive rated which your practically ignoring. I get the Zelos having higher specs like most micro brands, but X factor even??. I've had a Pagani Design because of the specs it included but I soon realised when you look down at your wrist it doesn't hold up. That's why the Seiko wins in that department not just, but by a mile. These are my opinions and probably why you might get grief criticising Seiko. All the same great channel, love watching the reviews and you've helped renew my interest in watches from when I was young.🤞👍👍

I thought I recognized an orange samurai in the intro to the MeisterSinger video! I was very curious to see what you had in store for it, and you didn't disappoint. I mostly agree with your assessment. I have Seikos and microbrands and love them both, to the dismay of my wallet! (Although I got my SRPC07 for 265 USD...)

I love when a reviewer tells it like it is about Seiko. I am sure than the Seiko fan-boys will throw a tizzy. As for mineral crystals, a waste of money. I have only one watch with a mineral crystal and I had to replace it because of the scratches. I don't own a Zelos but I will say this, of the microbrands that I own, I have no desire to flip one. Moral of the story, buy smartly.)))

I call foul, unfair 2 on 1! :-;-) I do like that Zelos carbon truthfully. Would have been nice to put both on the Timegrapher given the alleged QC problems at Seiko.

I don’t know about that final score. Too close for my taste as the Zelos is SO MUCH better than the Seiko in most categories.

*I* like it when people criticize Seiko. I think they're a company that has lost their way and their fans are rabid for the sake of being rabid.
