I don't get Seiko and Orient hanging on to mineral crystals. Sapphire is available and cheap as seen on hundreds of Chinese watches. If the vintage look is what they want, go with plastic - at least it can be polished with toothpaste.

Any time a Zaibatsu appears to do something irrational, the first question is whether it's to do with integration. My guess: Seiko Epson produces its own clear acrylics but doesn't produce its own synthetic sapphire.

Jodi, as a WIS (watch idiot savant) and having owned 2-300 watches, Orient Star is a fantastic line. The value per $ is very good for a non-micro brand. I own 3 and haven't paid more than $400 for any of them, and I'd put them against 6-800+$ Swiss watches any day of the week (except for movement finishing, which leaves a little bit to desire). P.S. My wife knows when I'm watching your videos, she can hear your voice from the intro lol.

I have this watch for years now and I love it. I learned from the power reserve that you can wind an automatic watch very fast by putting it in your front pocket and walk a few hundred meters. Without power reserve I didn't know this.

I have the AF02004W that came on a leather strap. It actually came in a very nice long watch box as opposed to the square the bracelet version comes in. I understand that the power reserve is a signature complication for an Orient Star. I don't mind it especially where they have put it and I find it very useful when I'm not wearing the watch for a couple of days. I also have an Orient Star basic date both are virtually spot on in terms of time keeping time gaining only two to three seconds over the course of a week.

Sorry Jody I love the date and power reserve. Pity it's not a sapphire crystal. A personal opinion - I'd have liked some little dots of lume by the hour markers and a sliver or lume on the hour and minute hand. Then it truly would be a 50's-60's throwback dress watch plus some practicality too.

I'm watching this a year later because I was curious about this watch compared to my 38 mm Bambino. I'm thinking the Star might actually be less refined overall. Like the second hand issue you mentioned - on the Bambino it curves with the dial and goes all the way to the minute track, which is itself closer to the edge of the dial. Plus the Bambino has brushed case sides, a nicer shaped crown, and a slightly thinner case. On the other hand, I'm kinda digging that fuel gauge on the Star. I guess you can't have everything.

I picked this one up - early in my watch collecting obsession, late in 2017 - from LongIslandWatch for about $285, but they don't seem to be carrying the Orient Star line any longer. I have an Orient Star Sports Watch in PVD and a gray dial and I absolutely love it. I replaced the leather strap with an PVD and 21mm "Greige" single pass NATO from Crown and Buckle and the result is one of the best-looking watches in my collection. The watch itself is probably best described as a pilot watch due to its large flieger style screw down crown. Very thin. Very reliable and very pretty for a military themed watch. I thought these had been discontinued but Orient USA just reintroduced them. I got mine from Japan for about $350. Not sure what the Orient USA guys are smoking for selling the same watch for $1200.

I was interested to hear your comment about the bracelet and maximum size of wrist. The leather straps are sized similarly as I know from the silver handed Vs I have. Are Orient Star watches designed to be Japanese market only product I wonder? For me these watches have the ever so slightly clunky nature of a vintage Omega dress watch and really capture that aesthetic. And the quirks to me are defining characteristics without which it would look like many another Orient offering. When I bought mine, the choice was between the Star and a Bambino Small Seconds. I disregarded the Cocktail Times for being indiscreet and blousy, we old brits seeing sharp but understated as the way to go when dressing for dinner.

However Orient have just released the Bambino 38mm, and it currently looks to be readily available in the UK, and at almost half the price, I'll probably jump for one of those.

Same situation with my mako XL! I removed only one link for my 18 см wrist!

It’s a wee belter alright but there appears to be a ‘refresh’ model: RE-AU0006S00B. Far more akin to the SARB line for those who can’t get enough.

Imo, I don’t like the placements of the power reserve and the logo. If they swapped em it would be perfect

Sometimes I can't understand why everybody is talking so much about a saphire when we know that if watch is abused, the case is going to be scratched anyway so what is the point of having a perfect crystal on a demaged watch? Once if restored, crystal can be replaced and so on... And, Happy New Year!

My sapphire crystals have, so far, never been scratched. My mineral crystals have.

I am a big wrist guy and watches that are under 40mm look small and has if it was a female watch, a good example I have is the Lorus lumibrite, it looks tiny, I wished they had a 40mm lumi, I love the watch but I rarely use it because of the size it has...

Yea, I would hesitate to buy this because of the small bracelet. With EVERY watch I buy having a soft strap, I have to factor in the cost of buying a longer strap because it's usually tight even in the last hole. I don't know how I'd do with this bracelet, and I really don't like universal bracelets.

It's a nice piece, but reminds me too much of the bambino, Two pieces that I'd consider for the price are the Heritage goth classic and the outdoor with the black dial

Lovely watch but if they won’t do sapphire I’d rather they do acrylic than hardlex for the crystal. Just as cheap if not cheaper and you can polish out the scratches.

cheap old plastic is indeed cheaper. But from my understanding a modern good acrylic costs about as much as a sapphire
