I don't get Seiko and Orient hanging on to mineral crystals. Sapphire is available and cheap as seen on hundreds of Chinese watches. If the vintage look is what they want, go with plastic - at least it can be polished with toothpaste.

Jodi, as a WIS (watch idiot savant) and having owned 2-300 watches, Orient Star is a fantastic line. The value per $ is very good for a non-micro brand. I own 3 and haven't paid more than $400 for any of them, and I'd put them against 6-800+$ Swiss watches any day of the week (except for movement finishing, which leaves a little bit to desire). P.S. My wife knows when I'm watching your videos, she can hear your voice from the intro lol.

I have the AF02004W that came on a leather strap. It actually came in a very nice long watch box as opposed to the square the bracelet version comes in. I understand that the power reserve is a signature complication for an Orient Star. I don't mind it especially where they have put it and I find it very useful when I'm not wearing the watch for a couple of days. Sorry Jody I love the date and power reserve. Pity it's not a sapphire crystal. A personal opinion - I'd have liked some little dots of lume by the hour markers and a sliver or lume on the hour and minute hand. Then it truly would be a 50's-60's throwback dress watch plus some practicality too.

I'm watching this a year later because I was curious about this watch compared to my 38 mm Bambino. I'm thinking the Star might actually be less refined overall. Like the second hand issue you mentioned - on the Bambino it curves with the dial and goes all the way to the minute track, which is itself closer to the edge of the dial. Plus the Bambino has brushed case sides, a nicer shaped crown, and a slightly thinner case. On the other hand, I'm kinda digging that fuel gauge on the Star. I guess you can't have everything.

I replaced the leather strap with an PVD and 21mm "Greige" single pass NATO from Crown and Buckle and the result is one of the best-looking watches in my collection. The watch itself is probably best described as a pilot watch due to its large flieger style screw down crown. Very thin. Very reliable and very pretty for a military themed watch. I was interested to hear your comment about the bracelet and maximum size of wrist. The leather straps are sized similarly as I know from the silver handed Vs I have. Are Orient Star watches designed to be Japanese market only product I wonder? For me these watches have the ever so slightly clunky nature of a vintage Omega dress watch and really capture that aesthetic. And the quirks to me are defining characteristics without which it would look like many another Orient offering. When I bought mine, the choice was between the Star and a Bambino Small Seconds. I disregarded the Cocktail Times for being indiscreet and blousy, we old brits seeing sharp but understated as the way to go when dressing for dinner.
