Several years ago, I didn't know much about watches, but I knew I liked the diver style, and I wanted an automatic. At the time it was coming up to my birthday, and my mom asked me what I wanted. I found the cheapest diver I could on Amazon, which happened to be an Invicta grand diver, which is like the pro, but a little bigger. I didn't have any idea about the brand, but I liked the look, and it was affordable, and importantly, an automatic movement. My mom of course got it for me, and I fell for it hard, got a new strap for it, etc. She died about a year later, and it ended up being the last important thing she bought me, and I still love it, and wear it quite a bit, even since I've added more watches to the collection. I couldn't care less about what people think of the brand.

Did my last 3 tours in Afghanistan with a G-Shock DW5600. Couldn't kill the thing. And it does still sit in the bottom corner of my watch box. I'm pretty anti quartz, but I'm glad I made an exception for that watch. The main reason I bought it specifically for Afghanistan is because it was the one watch I could find that let me keep real world time and "Afghanistan Time" one one time piece. For those of you who've been there, you know what I mean.

just wait for it. There is a reason why it’s a poor garbage in house movement and made so fast into a mass production. That is actually impossible to achieve in such a short period of time. It's everyone I was looking for... surprise feature: of you lift your arm to look at the watch in the typical watch-reading position, the backlight goes on. I already have another solar/atomic G (MTG-M900 on the resin strap from the GWM-500 👍), so I recently picked up a G-Shock-esque Casio W-219H for $16.88... I think it is shaped like the original MRG-100, wears a little better than the square on my 7" wrist, and fixes my issues with the F-91W (i.e., larger, better water resistance, better quality resin, better strap, better backlight, better screen protection, actual 18mm lugs/springbars, and bigger numbers/display)... so far, I'm loving the Casio W-219H as an everyday and you can't beat the

The AliExpress comment at the beginning of the video caught me off guard. I must have taken too long of hiatus. Would love to see a video about why attitudes have changed towards those brands. Ali is how I came to JOMW to begin with. With that being said, I know he focused on major brands - but as a die-hard Christopher Ward fan who has been eyeing the Twelve for a while, Jody's own Erebus Ascent really packs some wild bang for the buck. You can really tell that Erebus was a passion project for him and his business partner as that particular watch punches far above its weight class. Especially the textured dials. Kudos to you Jody for being modest - but I think anyone would be hard pressed to find better value, wrist presence, and attention to detail than your latest release.

I started collecting in 2020 after my father passed away in December 2019. I got a few of the Invictas from his collection. They weren't Pro Divers, but they weren't completely obnoxious either. When I started checking out the Invicta website, that's when I really went down the rabbit hole and wound up owning several Pro Divers. Like you pointed out, stainless steel and automatic movement for about eighty bucks made me very interested. There's definitely some cost cutting. As you often say, your money is spread very thin. Sapphire crystal would be a step up, the lume is crap, and the bezel action can be hit or miss. But I think they're very good watches and I'm glad to see them getting some praise from folks online. And I completely agree with you on the Glycine Combat Sub, which is my favorite dive watch.

This video really shows that at the $50 or $100 price points, AliExpress watches have no equals. The Casio Duro has lousy lume, wears big at 44mm wide, and the Timex Expedition is as cheaply made as its price suggests. The Chinese mushroom brands have better movements, sapphire, ceramic bezels and much better lume for similar money. Not only that, but they are actually cheaper now than they were three years ago,

PLUS, Timex and all the others get either components, complete calibres ("movements"), or whole watches from China. They buy CHEAP and add a premium ... which we are supposed to pay for inferior stuff. Timex is always on my list. I am on a limited income and cannot afford to waste money on cheap junk. Glycine Combat Sub GMT owner here (GL0380) since Jan 2024. Exceptional quality and value, PLUS heritage from a 100% swiss brand over 100 years in operation. They are a literal steal. Bought from Ashford, no issues. Great recommendation! Two thumbs up for the Glycine!

At the top end of your list is a watch brand YOU turned me onto! STEINHART!!! Especially my OLKO Special Edition of the Ocean 39 GMT. Though they now go for just over $500, I got mine for just under and it is, hands down, the favorite watch in my collection. Classic design (thanks 1970s Rolex), sapphire crystal, all stainless steel with solid end inks and milled clasp, 300m of water resistance, and a Swiss movement, I don't think they can be beat for the price. Hell...at twice the price!

Wow, I just got in the mail a DW-5600UE today! After seeing this video and enjoying the watch so much, let's just say I don't foresee any buyer's remorse. I ordered the original DW-5600UE because it's cheaper, but Amazon sent me the new one for $45! Idk if it's just an accident or what, but it was a very nice surprise, I almost ordered one from Japan. The led light is pretty nice.

I think the purists like the electroluminescent backlights but to me it's just evolution. LED tech has got so good they are brighter and use less power, what's not to like about that?
@Dreamweaver94
@Dreamweaver94 13 күн бұрын
@@simonbeasley989 Yeah I think you're right, purists, or maybe just people nostalgic for EL backlights prefer it. The green looks cool, but like you said, the led uses less power and is brighter. On the updated Tough Solar Squares you can also set the LED display time to 3 seconds, twice as long, which would be really nice. After wearing my DW-5600U for 10 days, I found the flashing LED alarm option to be really nice too.

Thanks for another informative and cool video - very glad you excluded micro-brands, it's very annoying how they almost never have stock (especially of hyped new releases) I think some of them cynically use 'scarcity manipulation' to drive demand, it's not like they are offering some unique in house movement or something special...

What do you think of the Lorus military watch (RXF41AX7) in the sub $50 category? Also full Lumibrite dial and 100m water resistance, so more than the Timex. It's a Seiko brand, so I would assume a decent quality...?

The Glycine is severely underrated and is the most easily wearable diver out there. Super thin, with delicate and intricate handset to fit in that profile and a bracelet and clasp that just hug the wrist so nicely. My black Kamasu is my daily, but I may get a different dial color to maybe wear it more.

Jody, did you look at my watch box? I have 3 Timex Expeditions with a 4th on the way, a Citizen EcoDrive, 2 Invicta Pro Divers, and I had a G-Shock, but I traded the G-Shock to my buddy Matt for some tools. It fits his wrist way better than mine. The Bertucci A-1 is on my shopping list, as is the Wenger Urban Metro. Love the value watch round ups, because the less I can spend on watches the more I can spend on fishing tackle.

Great video! For the under $50 category, I would add 2 more watches. First, the Casio Men's Tough Solar AQ-S810W-1AVCF ($38.46 Solar with 100m water resistance). This is IMHO, one of the best beater watches ever, and I have never had the solar power go below high even though I don't wear it every day. Next the Timex Men's Ironman Endure 30 Shock 42mm Watch. It is about $43.28 and has a full 200m water resistance. While the Casio is a little cheaper, this is also an inexpensive watch which IMHO is a little more comfortable to wear than the Casio (that's why the Timex is my watch of choice on long international flights).

I had the smaller 800 version of that Casio (42mm instead 48mm). I bought for being Tough Solar ... and HATED it! It bit me on my 19cm/7.5inch wrist, so I do not even want to know what the bigger 810 would do! It went back to Amazon. The problem with Casio is, that most of their watches are now oversized and shaped like porcupines, that want to bite my wrist all the time. They are MUCH worse than Invicta in that regard, with Invicta actually being smoothly shaped and thus a lot friendlier to wear, believe it or not. WTF happened to the small and smooth Casios of the 70s and 80s I grew up with? They could have upgraded and evolved them with larger displays, and cases big enough to accommodate that, but smooth and without edges! But no, they had to turn them into weird fantasy military junk fantasies for teenagers on dope. The only one left for older eyes needing a larger display, which is also 100meter proof or better, is the Duro, but that is not solar, and just another battery eater. They are missing so much in opportunities for great watch designs. Back to other brands, for automatics and other, better solar watches! Sorry, Casio lost me a while ago!

Timex tickingness is not a bug, it’s a feature, it’s designed in purpose to constantly remind you the battery is charged, it’s the next big step after the EOL (end of life ) battery function 😹… I found the Boderry Voyager the direct competition to Bertucci, Titanium at very affordable price. Invicta too has a model pro diver in titanium, NH35 movement with 100m WR, a great proposition. As for G Shock, well I’m currently in my G Shock appreciation revival and I get the casioak, the Rangeman, the old G lide gwx 560. I’ve been a naughty boy 😅 Thanks for the video.

Maybe - or maybe it'd come across as an Ali shill to include them, because as a value proposition the likes of San Martin can be very difficult indeed to beat. Quite tempted by one myself at the moment... SN004-Q-B - Bronze cased diver with an SW200 - under £400 (before any import, presumably, but still looks a bit of a bargain). I don't need it, and typically prefer to wear bracelets over straps or I might've already jumped - but damn it's a lot of watch for the money and that bronze holds some real appeal.

I keep my solar G-shock in a watch case with transparent cover on the night stand. In the winter it loses power 2 times and you only see it when you put it on. It then has to sit a couple of days near the window at wich point I'm no longer in the mood for it so it goes back in the case. To be honest, for my 15'ish watches colection, changing bateries every 3 years is less of a hussle than solar. Is not bad to lubricate the seals every 3 years anyway.
