I think this is the most beautiful choreo BTS has done, in my opinion. Black Swan (all the versions) is a close second, but Butterfly is so emotive and graceful.

Butterfly is about loving someone very very fragile. You want to love them ,help them but you are afraid that you could hurt them. You could push them over the edge. Remember Suga wrote this who had openly admitted to suffering severe depression, mental health problems in the past. Including suicidal ideation. This is one of several BTS songs that have really helped saved lives.💜 Shows persons sufferring that the people may not know what to say to them but this is how they feel. That you will hurt your loved ones if you leave.

Okay, I'm a book nerd, and I already knew about the lonely whale ,so when I found BTS and saw they had a song called whalien 52, I said, there is no way they wrote a song using that as a metaphor for not being heard and being lonely. No way. But yes. It's one of the main reasons why I dove further into them. Their lyrics were smart, and meant something. Here I am 6 years later. ARMY for life.

These three songs are a great representation of BTS. Butterfly is lovely on its own, but when you add the choreo, it just elevates it to something truly beautiful. It's a good one to sing along to as well. Whalen 52 shows how good they are at taking something random and turning it into a deep, meaningful message (134340, Whalien, Butterfly, Baepsae (Silver Spoon) , etc. - I second the suggestion that you react to DKDKTV's explanation video along with the song reaction. Clever, clever boys they are 😉). Lastly, Ma City is another one that is best heard live. They give such energy when they perform this, but with this song in particular they show how much they appreciate the band. The band really goes off on this one and it just makes for one big hype train for everyone present. Have a Merry Christmas, Pat!

Whalian 52 is about a certain whale that speaks at a different range than other whales in its species to hear so it’s lonely cause no other whales of its kind can’t hear it. They’re relating it to how they feel lonely in their career with their music

If you listen to (Take Two) Jhope Sings of How This Specific Whale Found it’s Mate ( By Saying in His Lyrics The Whale is No Longer Lonely ) love this Song 💜

Happy holidays, Pat! Oh, you reviewed some gems today. Someone already commented on Butterfly and its meaning. I do love that choreo. Whalien 52 is based on the true story of a whale found that sang in a different range from other whales (although I heard recently they found another whale that was in the same range). Anyway, this song led to ARMY or BTS being represented by a purple whale--we are able to hear each other in a world where maybe we felt unheard. Later in "Take Two" J-hope says something to the effect that the lonely whale has been heard. Poignant! And then "Ma City"--I love hearing the rap line boast about their hometowns. I totally crack up at Suga's line: honestly, there's nothing to brag about in Daegu! Then he concludes: the biggest brag is that I'm from there! Ha! I will never forget watching this performance in Busan at their last concert before enlistment. Jungkook and Jimin hail from Busan and they were hyped beyond belief. Thanks for your reaction!

Their B-sides are amazing as well...no skips when listening to their albums. Google the whale 🐋 with 52 hertz which they incorporated into their song...plus space (outer space, alien, galaxy etc) to create one of their beautiful masterpieces. 💜🎶

We hear them and share their song with others. =0) I love them using real whale song in this. Just beautiful. This song is actually inspired by a real whale called 52Hz whale. In recent yrs we got news that the whale finally found another whale that hears it's song so it's not alone no more. UwU. We celebrated on twt and madly shared tagged BTS. The guys know the whale found a friend at last. Hugs. -NY USA 2019 Army 💜 Karina Holst Hebsgaard said on 9/2021 Scientists have recorded a whale using a 52 MHz frequency. Whales usually use a frequency around 20-30 MHz. This one whale is an anomaly and probably can't communicate with other whales (they can't hear it) so it's an "alienated whale"/Whalien dubbed The Most Lonely Whale by the scientific community.  J-Hope speaks of his pain and hurt, as oil and water. Never to be mixed with each other, a layer on top of one another and separate. He chooses to swim to the surface to breathe and says, “But I always think, even if I sleep curled up like a shrimp now, that I must dream like a whale - the praise that will come one day will make me dance every day.” RM then speaks, “My mom said that the ocean is blue - she told me to raise my voice with all my strength to reach farther but what should I do? The place is too dark and full of whales that speak other languages.” Here, RM speaks of the unknown, using the deep ocean as a metaphor for the things he does not understand or speak. “I want to say I love you, a round that I sing alone. I run over the same music sheet - the ocean is too deep but I’m still unfortunate. No one will know even if I cry.” Whalien 52 is a perfect metaphor for the loneliness one feels growing up, never to be understood or heard. It is knowing that what you say is futile when your words are spoken but never understood by someone in the same frequency. It is a metaphor for the anxiety that comes with venturing into the unknown for the first time and wondering if your book will be ever read, your poems recited and your music memorised, wondering if you would ever be understood but living with the hope, you will.


 For many, Whalien 52 is a perfect metaphor for BTS’ own story - their story of how they rose, even when many thought differently. It is the story of how they waded between seas when the only thing they wanted to do was to perform. It is BTS speaking of their loneliness, as artists and as humans themselves. In a letter for ARMY, RM wrote, “Just like in Whalien 52, I was a lonely whale, but I didn’t realise you guys are the wide sea that hugged me while I’m breathing and swimming. Catch my hertz and willingly listen.” The story of the 52-Hertz whale also has had much criticism surrounding it. There has been talk of whether or not such a whale exists and if so, if it truly is alone. Perhaps, the 52-Hertz whale is an anomaly, perhaps it is a hybrid, perhaps there are many more of them. There is a possibility that the 52- Hertz is all alone but it is also entirely possible, it is heard and understood. In Whalien 52, a lyric goes, “An endless signal will reach someday everywhere, even to the other side of the earth.” Our songs will be heard, even if they are not understood. Our words will be understood, repeated, in this lonely void. Perhaps, we are not alone as we think we are. Perhaps, there are more of us.
