A few years ago, attempted a job my car. I screwed up. Took it to my mechanic and told him what I did and admitted I screwed up. He was thrilled, and said, “Thanks for telling me. Most people lie and make everything more difficult”. It’s humbling, but better than blaming “the other shop”.

@@61rampy65 I wish that was true. I had a cold-start engine miss and told the shop I'd swapped the O2 sensor 6 weeks earlier. 2 weeks and $1200 later (and finding nothing) he got around to testing the O2 sensor. O'Reilly's said the O2 sensor was Bosche (and charged accordingly) but it turned out to be Chinesium. It worked for a month. Fortunately the shop discounted the $1400 bill to $1000, for a $200 repair.

Back in 1989 the navy had me at Treasure Island in San Francisco . With nothing to do I wondered around and found a civilian working on a car. It was a 1928 Packard Limo. He told me he knew a guy who attended an auction of abandoned/lost train car haulers and bid on two unseen as not allowed to look inside. He won the 2 rail cars and when he looked inside, both were full capacity of 1957 Chevy Bel Airs, keys and paperwork in the glove compartment straight from the factory. Only miles were from the factory to the rail car.

Back in the mid 90's, my mother had her 86 Suzuki Samauri repaired after an accident. The body shop claimed the rear axle was bent and had the axle replaced. However, the shop that did the work neglected to fill the axle with gear oil. It wasn't discovered until after it had been driven home about 10 miles and my mother had me do a once-over on it to make sure everything was good. Also found most of the spring mount bolts loose.

Back in the early 90s, I got a 1980 Volkswagen Dasher - essentially a 4 door wagon version of a rabbit; had a little diesel engine. It needed new CV joints. Chilton Manual to the rescue!! I got it done; took it to the nearby shop to get the front end aligned. Mech said I'd done a great job! There are a few (not this many!) bad jobs done by "another shop". Case in point: many many years ago a friend of ours had his oil changed at the dealership where he bought the car. They failed to put the oil filler cap back on (left the metal cap sitting on the radiator) and then slammed the hood down. Customer didn't appreciate the new look of his hood, and the dealership got to fix it free of charge. But most of these are just brother-in-law Biff in his backyard with his "I can make it fit" philosophy.

One of my first jobs, back in the early 70s, was gas jockey at a small gas station with one mechanic who was a very recent high school grad. In hindsight, it was "another shop" based on the talent, or lack there of, that one mechanic possessed. He had a "left over parts" drawer that quickly filled to overflowing. And he he was fond of disabling warning lights.

A Bentley. With a moldy interior. What kind of person has the “savoir faire” to want a Bentley, but doesn’t mind MOLD?! EDIT: I used “savior faire” sort of wrongly; it’s closer to “social grace”. But I meant “swank” or “swagger”. You know... “rizz”, unless that’s already obsolete! Lol!

I had a body shop install a counterfeit radiator assembly on my Jetta and return the vehicle with AC inop and coolant gushing from the car. I wasn't about to give those clowns a chance to break some more stuff so I took it to a competent indie Euro specialist mechanical shop. Even though the front of the car was all smashed up and leaking coolant after the wreck, the AC actually still worked when I dropped it off at the body shop. I'm just glad there was no frame damage because the body shop definitely would have botched that repair. There were also some fisheyes in the paint, the sign of a shop that can't even properly do the work they specialize in. Unfortunately I couldn't sue them because they were already in bankruptcy by the time I went to file. The body shop no longer exists so at least I can take some comfort from that.

My first car was a 1968 Pontiac LeMans. I drove the livin' hell outta that car and at one point, a hydraulic lifter was not functioning correct and it was chewing-up the push-rods. I was poor, -work three part-time jobs and barely made $100-150 per week. A cheap solution was to have a handful of 'used but good' push-rods in my toolbox, and a modified rocker-arm to have a washer welded to 'deepen the cup' to receive the top end of the push-rod... when the engine started misfiring too badly, pop the valve cover off (it had a neoprene-rubber gasket so it came off/on easily enough) and slip-out the worn push-rod and drop in a new one, re-tighten the rocker arm and replace the valve cover and we're good to go (for a few more hundred miles.) I drove this thing to Colorado and back twice (from New York) until a mechanically-inclined friend told me to just pull the hydraulic lifter out (replace it) -which I did. It was 'flared' a bit on the bottom end where it contacts the camshaft so a bit of flat-filing was done (with a few clean cloths strategically placed to catch the filing shavings, got the lifter out, dropped new one in, replaced everything and it ran for a few thousand more miles until ...the transmission crossbeam was discovered to be eroded and had holes so sold the car to my best friend and we entered the car in the Demolition Derby at the County Fair that year... he got 'black flagged' quick when the gas-tank fell off the car(!!) but it was a fun car, gave me 4 or 5 years of use. Good friggin' times!!!
