Cape Westwind was the 1st 8man instance a player would see in the game in the MSQ, and 2nd if they did all the guildhests while leveling. As expansions were released, low level rotations were replaced, and power creep set in it became a traditional prank to overhype the fight only for it to end in a ten second tank-n-spank. When Patch 6.1 came out, they replaced the ARR MSQ dungeons and this battle to be more consistent with modern FF14 design, and in the process embraced the meme to make this the hardest solo duty in ARR and agruably the entire game with mechanic patterns you would normally see in a level 81+ raid.

Yeah changes to the ARR dungeons where really needed. Personally Prea pissed me off sometimes as you could go AFK right after doing the elevator skips and because you are technically still in combat you couldnt be kicked.

I just did this today and holy smokes you're not joking. It takes just one mistake and you start over again from the beginning. Its that which makes it brutal and tiring.

Cape Westwind used to be a massive meme before its rework. It was a super easy fight that groups would burn down in like 30 seconds but it was also the first 8 man content in the MSQ. When people saw there was a new sprout everyone would hype up the fight like "i spent 5 hours on this fight" and "its ok if we wipe, this is a really hard fight" and also put down a bunch of markers for made-up mechanics, making sprouts thinking it was super hard. It was an unwritten rule in the community to never spoil this for new players and to also join in to convince them that it was super hard. Like a rite of passage for sprouts. A bunch of people got trolled by this. I think the most memorable one is Savix who got baited by his twitch chat into looking at a fake guide which looked super confusing. He has a KZbin video of the whole experience if you need react content :)

didnt used to be, it was fairly hard back in the day when it was current content, just like the hard mode primal fights. its only a joke because you had people walking in with 130 ilvl raid gear for a fight that was designed around having 40-49 ilvl gear. No boss is a challenge if you over gear it by nearly a multiple of three. then you factor in all the class/job changes over the years and several jobs getting entire reworks.

I'd never actually watched the remade version of this fight; they really gave Rhitatyn the fight he deserved. The ARR finale in general was super improved and I'm super glad to see people enjoying it now.

I really love the new Cape Westwind. A solo 4-phase fight. I still remember the old one. Cape Westwind was literally the shortest Trial ever. The cutscene was 5 times longer than the fight itself. I think the record was (in the server I'm in) 17.5 sec. Now? Now this whole fight actually gives you a real challenge. One of the best improvements they did for ARR.

i truly think that this fight has been my favorite moment in the entire story thus far (I'm in stb!). it's *brutal* and it really gives you the sense of how *dedicated* rhitahtyn is, and is a truly unexpected way to make the garleans real, actual PEOPLE and not just Bad Guys. and the mechanics tell the story SO WELL. his desperation at the end of it all, the way he holds on to you because he knows he barely even has one chance and he's already going to die no matter what. The way he makes you stare into his eyes as you try desperately to keep yourself alive, forcing you to confront every little reality of what you're doing, of what fighting like this MEANS. I think it's the first thing that made me cry in the game, and it SERIOUSLY messed up my whm WoL, who up to this point had a really powerful, optimistic "nobody HAS to die" kind of mentality.

i forgot until you got back to it but i think what really got me was how his men all came running back to try to kill you because they LOVED HIM. because he was SO GOOD to just the normal rank and file soldiers that they WILLINGLY came back and laid down their lives for HIM. not for the empire, not for any plans, but just for their commander that they loved and respected so much. And you have to stand there and kill them. You just don't have a choice. There is no correct answer in war. SOMEBODY has to die, the strongest person is the one who decides, and at the end of it all there are no moral decisions. It doesn't matter what he stands for or who he works for or how much people love him -- he's going to kill you unless you kill him first. You can't decide in the moment which one of you will have a better impact on the world. The only thing you get to decide is whether or not you want to *live.*

I recently replayed ARR not long ago and was amazed at just how much this part of the game has been improved. Reading about it is one thing, but seeing for myself was quite another. You already saw some big improvements when you did the Copperbell Mines and Toto-Rak dungeons.

I really like the redone Cape Westwind, it doubles down on Ritathyn's character and shows really well why his men were ready to lay down their lives for him. First time I did it, I failed too - he just refuses to die!

cape westwind was the biggest laugh-number ingame, but the rework is so great! played a second char through the whole story again and i enjoyed the reworks very much as well as the shortened arr quests (you are gonna enjoy too)!

A bit of advice since you're from WoW and I know we like some min-max. You don't need to go so far to dodge aoes as melees. The melee range in FF14 is huge, sometimes you can still keep uptime and dodge the aoes and when you can't you could just do gcd step out and in in between a gcd.

the original was pretty difficult back in the day but time nerfs all content through better gear, syncing, and job balancing. you would also have terrible gear by this point, but now you get a free set of mid tier job gear that you had to do multiple dungeons runs to acquire, for free just for finishing your final lv50 job quest in a reward coffer. it only became a joke later on in its lifespan.

I can't beat this damn quest after 1 year of trying. On the second phase I get wiped with full AOE combo attacks. I've tried Black Mage and Samurai and I feel like the only way is to max out as a paladin. Ruins the whole game in my case.
