'There's Always Something There To Remind Me' has one of my favorite Dionne moments! She's just nicely singing along and out of the blue comes a totally crazy vocal during the modulation. She had to sing some the hardest repetoire with all those Bacharach compositions, not just in terms of range but because of it's intricate melodies & unsual time signatures (Walk On By & DYKTW to San Jose are among the easier ones; I Say A Little Prayer & A House Is Not A Home are others by him, originally recorded by Dionne if I'm not mistaken). The woman is trained, precise and understands music very fundamentally. Thanks for doing such a long compilation of this Legend.

Dionne is one of the most technical singers. She was trained extensively by her mother, aunts, and uncles who were all amazing gospel singers. You should listen to her mother and aunts singing, playing organ, directing the choirs, at their home church in new jersey. Her family was to new jersey what the clarks and winans are to detroit. Theres a video of Dionne singing Operatic soprano in the early 60s with a gospel choir. And she was giving Cissy houston a run for her money.

YOUR reaction is MY reaction to discovering her 'earlier' career. She apparently smoked A LOT of cigarettes which damaged her lung capacity & range (same as Whitney). But you were SPOT on - Whitney in a clip I watched on YT said she would 'study' Dionne, Gladys & Streisand. So, you're right! Whitney is literally the BEST of ALL the greats! There's a clip of Gladys singing "So Sad The Song" and you will literally see how much Whitney picked up from GLADYS as well...

It's the clip of "So Sad the Song" with the 214K views (not the Top of the Pops version - that show made everyone lip sync apparently) -- but note the tender moments in the song, to the vibrato on the sustained belts and taking her time with the arrangement...ALL things that made Whitney performances, Gladys gives a masterclass on.

@@geminikid1617 However, Aretha regained her voice to a great degree. During the late 80s, Aretha's high notes were GONE! Many, including myself, thought her career was over! Somehow, during the late 90s, as can be heard in her songs "In The Morning" and in her Grammy performance of "Nessun Dorma," Aretha's range and power was ASTOUNDING and OUTSTANDING! I think the fact, that Aretha stopped smoking in 1993, was what restored her voice. I'm sorry that Dionne never quit smoking and I never understood why she was steadfast about not quitting and how she proudly would say, that she loves smoking, although, it was negatively impacting on her voice and health??!! Nonetheless, I love her singing and the fact, that she's living her life as she pleases.
