This is why it is so important to watch performances in context instead of all of those "note by note" videos or just short clips. You've given Dionne major side eye in some of your reactions, but now you see she was a true beast.

I had so much joy watching you appreciate Dionne's artistry in her peak years. She was untouchable from 1979-91. Whitney learned all her stage presence from Dionne. Whitney as a little girl would tour with Dionne, fly on her private jets with her during summers to catch her Vegas shows in the 70s, and watch her from the stage. Whitney rarely talked about those times though, probably because she didn't want to make it seem that Dionne influenced her more than her mom. (and totally understandable). Whitney learned to take her graceful bows, perfect mic control, stage banter etc from Dionne. In fact, during her 85-86 shows when she was just breaking through, her banter was very similar to Dionnes. And Whitney's early 80s shows were more sophisticated and polished a la Dionne - before she became a bit more gritty in the late 90s to 00's. I think Whitney would've loved to give Dionne more credit than she did in her acceptance speeches when she got her big awards, but her allegiance is to her mom, and Cissy is a proud woman too, and probably would've felt slighted if Whitney heaped too much praise on Dionne. They're a talented family, but also a competitive one, as are most musical dynasties like them.

You are so on point with your statement. I felt the very same. Without Whitney really saying bc... you can tell deep down inside she wanted to shout Ms. Dionne's credits and influences so badly🙂😄

@@a4ur8 I agree. It took me a long time to get used to her lower tones, but now, it's so beautiful. Like Joni Mitchell, (who unlike Dionne, was once a soprano but in her later years got as deep as Dionne is now, Dionne's alto still has a richness and she knows how to maneuver vocally to compensate without destroying the song. Her musicianship is impeccable. All those years sight-reading Burt Bacharach's complex charts was the best training she could have gotten.

Damn stop comparing Dionne to Whitney - it’s the other way around. It always was. Dionne was a global sensation in the 60’s and then the 70’s. Twenty years before Whitney. There’s a reason Burt Bacharach made her a star and gave all his best songs to her before anyone else. Her stellar voice and control and her magisterial presence on stage. Everyone has emulated that ever since. Not least Whitney. I remember seeing Dionne at the London Palladium nearly fifty years ago, she was mesmerising.

Yes Dionne is a beast, and she has influenced many in the industry. Luther Vandross also credited her as one of his favorite singers, if not his favorite, and I think you can hear a lot of her influence in him and his sound as well, from the silky smoothness of their voices, to the silky smooth, fast runs and vocal finesse. He also covered several of her songs, she did the original A House is Not A Home, and Anyone Who had A Heart, and there are many great videos of her performing those on here as well. They also did a song together called How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye, and there's a great performance of them doing that on here, with her in the red dress. She also sang the original I say A Little Prayer for You, and there's a great video on here of her and Aretha doing that together.

Listen to her interpretation LIVE of All is Fair in Love. She is a true artist, one of the best voices in music hands down. And as Burt Bacharach used to say, she could take a song and make it seem so easy to sing. A league of her own.

Dionne, like Whitney, was vocally very contained in her recordings. On purpose. Even the studio recording for this song is tame by comparison. It just sells more records to hit it right down the middle. If you wanted the drama, you had to go see the show live. Always have something more in store for the live paying audience. Whitney followed the same pattern. Not everybody wants to hear vocal church gymnastics on a record that’s being played on radio 5X a day. No. You choose the inclusive version, that everyone can sing along to. That’s a hit record formulaic certainty. I feel when recording artists today riff their heads off on records, it’s just a sign of a poorly-written/arranged song and they’re attempting to compensate. To rescue it vocally, when the songwriter fell asleep on THEIR job. Leave songwriting and arranging to the professionals. That’s what they did in the old days.

Awesome and true statement. You have to do the great basics to sell the record and then turn into a full powerful elegant tasteful beast during your live performances!! Remember, I said "Elegant and tasteful. Whitney got that formula from Ms. Dionne for sure.

Dionne is one bad lady. Whitney got a lot of mannerisms from Dionne. Please do a reaction video to Dionne's live performance of Yours. She hit a very high note in that performance.

Her biggest and early hits like “Walk on By” were penned by Burt Bacharach. His arrangements were really tight and didn’t give her much room to showcase her vocals.

Hey I know it's an old video but I loved it yeah Warwick is one of the great if you look at her early years see resembles Whitney a lot same way that she was dressed all that she was her classy lady you should look at her like 1964 albums so you can hear the way she sang she sounds much lighter her voice was very very light obviously powerful but it was so young she was a great lady thanks for the video I enjoyed it very much keep up the good work

DAAAAAMN. Her power is awesome, and her upper notes sound so much like 80s Whitney, it's like her voice gets thinner a bit and they overlap. And the mannerisms make it clear Whitney took after her

Like you, I never knew much about her either because by the time we were alive her voice was really low (apparently she smoked all of her early life). When I heard her do "Alfie" I FINALLY recognized the influence she has on Whitney. Definitely check out Dionne singing "Alfie" in 1974. She takes her time with it and you can hear more of her range!

She has always been underrated. Nobody seems to pay respect to her accolades and never give real credit to that phenomenal voice she has. Sad!!! That's why we need to always do our research on our people. Ms. Dionne has tons of masterful hit records and live performances!!!

It has been mentioned in the comments already, but Dionne Warwick was Whitney Houston's older cousin. Whitney's mother is gospel singer Cissy Houston. Cissy Houston is Dionne Warwick's aunt.
