I had so much joy watching you appreciate Dionne's artistry in her peak years. She was untouchable from 1979-91. Whitney learned all her stage presence from Dionne. Whitney as a little girl would tour with Dionne, fly on her private jets with her during summers to catch her Vegas shows in the 70s, and watch her from the stage. Whitney rarely talked about those times though, probably because she didn't want to make it seem that Dionne influenced her more than her mom. (and totally understandable). Whitney learned to take her graceful bows, perfect mic control, stage banter etc from Dionne. In fact, during her 85-86 shows when she was just breaking through, her banter was very similar to Dionnes. And Whitney's early 80s shows were more sophisticated and polished a la Dionne - before she became a bit more gritty in the late 90s to 00's. I think Whitney would've loved to give Dionne more credit than she did in her acceptance speeches when she got her big awards, but her allegiance is to her mom, and Cissy is a proud woman too, and probably would've felt slighted if Whitney heaped too much praise on Dionne. They're a talented family, but also a competitive one, as are most musical dynasties like them.

There’s a reason Burt Bacharach made her a star and gave all his best songs to her before anyone else. Her stellar voice and control and her magisterial presence on stage. Luther Vandross also credited her as one of his favorite singers, if not his favorite, and I think you can hear a lot of her influence in him and his sound as well, from the silky smoothness of their voices, to the silky smooth, fast runs and vocal finesse. He also covered several of her songs, she did the original A House is Not A Home, and Anyone Who had A Heart, and there are many great videos of her performing those on here as well. They also did a song together called How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye, and there's a great performance of them doing that on here, with her in the red dress. Dionne, like Whitney, was vocally very contained in her recordings. On purpose. Even the studio recording for this song is tame by comparison. It just sells more records to hit it right down the middle. If you wanted the drama, you had to go see the show live. Always have something more in store for the live paying audience. Whitney followed the same pattern. Not everybody wants to hear vocal church gymnastics on a record that’s being played on radio 5X a day. No. You choose the inclusive version, that everyone can sing along to. That’s a hit record formulaic certainty. I feel when recording artists today riff their heads off on records, it’s just a sign of a poorly-written/arranged song and they’re attempting to compensate. To rescue it vocally, when the songwriter fell asleep on THEIR job. Leave songwriting and arranging to the professionals. That’s what they did in the old days.

It has been mentioned in the comments already, but Dionne Warwick was Whitney Houston's older cousin. Whitney's mother is gospel singer Cissy Houston. Cissy Houston is Dionne Warwick's aunt.

I see Whitney when it shows her from profile view. Similar eyes and nose.

Guess I don’t see skin tone! It never even enters my mind. So glad I think like that. Perhaps more people should. X

Really like your appreciation of Ms D. Please react to her version of Stevie Wonders’ song For Once in My Life.
