It is a given, in my experience. I'm 63, learned from my Maw-maw who had stacks of old Needlecraft and Workbasket magazines. If you were doing a shoe from the patterns that were in the early part of the 1900s you made your own soles. I remember being told that they used to sell pre-made leather soles in various sizes with the stitching holes pre-punched along the outsides in what my Maw-maw called the General Store, where you went to buy dry goods. These later morphed into 5&10 cent stores like Mott's, Anthony's, and TG&Y. I still have my leather punch and I keep a supply of leather from Tandy Corp. to use as shoe soles. All the information you never needed, lol.

Same here, I'm a bit older than you but I remember my grandma buying slipper soles at Ben Franklin's on the West Coast as late as the early 60s. They carried craft items that were long outdated by popular culture but were still used by the older ladies. Soles were still available into the 70s and yes they were pre-punched.

I'm 62 and my grandmother made all of us kids these types of slippers for Christmas. Her local store had all kinds of stuff for slippers. I loved to go there with her to get her supplies. She never bought anything pre-made, it was always handmade, even down to all the underwear, bras, nightgowns, pj's, socks, etc. It was great!

U did it right!! I was shouting at the tv! Im from the shoe making centre of the uk it must be part of living here, being able to see the shoe!, i can see the bit u made first is the front of the shoe, the strap bit goes around the back of the foot and joins back to the bit you crocheted first. Look at the picture, you can see the seam they sewed. When u cut that bit off a part of me went "noooooo!" 😂😂 i cant see any sole in the pattern, you just crocheted the upper!❤
@audreydeneui1928 ай бұрын
For some reason the parts of unfinished shoe uppers look absolutely nothing like the finished object, let alone something you'd wear. Having the sole, or instructions to make them, would have helped (use the heavier yarn to make the soles). I've also seen some slipper patterns (I don't remember what yarn company had them) where you attach the upper to a flip flop/ shower shoe sole.

You win the academy award for this category!! I can see the purchased sole being a given in that one. No such a thing as a "fail" , the bra cup is excellent! You did it right! you are supposed to join the back (heel) to the front. You fold it exactly in half. Yes, you will need to add a sole. It's really pretty! I would like to make it! I was like, OH NO DON"T CUT IT! lol
@michellelanier71318 ай бұрын
This pattern is almost identical to the slippers I made years ago. You started perfectly. The point you messed up at is when you cut your yarn. The narrow end was the toes. The flat edge would've ended up forming your heel. Row 4 was all around. 5th row was 11 sc (misprint was skip 1 on both sides of increase). Over time that forms the curve for your toes. I wish I had a picture of my slippers. My daughter has then I'll see if she'll take a pic for me to share. Mine doesn't have the frills. But they are nearly identical.

I LOVED this one. I was with you on the first attempt (the bra cup) and thought you were doing it right. I think your second attempt was the right one. I am pretty new at crochet and I absolutely adore vintage and 19th-century garments and accessories, so I have tried following several patterns from these old books, but they are always so perplexing, and I have always blamed myself for it. Seeing a person who is so good at crochet struggle to understand the pattern and try to break it apart logically piece by piece, the way I do every time, made it seem so pure and fun, this struggle to understand crochet patterns and reminded me that even getting confused and not being able to get the final product can be such a great time spent. Thank you for the video and you are truly a champion for figuring something out of this pattern! Thank you again for the wonderful video and best of luck in everything!

You're brave to just read and try. I always translate / re-write the pattern into a separate sheet of paper and if I encounter problems out comes the grid paper and the crochet symbols and I chart out the pattern. It does take time upfront to do this, but it saves time once I start crocheting because it takes out the guess work and eliminates errors (mostly 😉 )

Just stand it up by itself and then get or make a sole and add it to the "building" up there...!!! BUT you have to stand it up first and, making believe the working counter is where the sole is supposed to be, fold the pointed section on its own over your left hand where the increases are, and it will start making sense to you... Hope it helps...!!! (BTW, it is a small slipper that needs alterating "the bridge" between both ends...)...

The sole was the first portion that you crocheted, which is why it said “to size”. Generally my soles are a peanut shape that comes from the three in the same stitch at either end. It is a continuous “row” around the oval. At that point I do a single row of back loop only all the way around, which will make the next row stand up at a 90* angle easily. Then the sole is complete and you are working on the top/sides of the slipper. After a few rounds the decease portion happens at the U shape of the toe, however this got muddled because they did the strap “built in” style first. I am a grandma and have made tons of slippers and booties for my grandkids, including baby cowboy boots, baby Reebok’s, and baby Mary Janes-which are the very closest to this pattern. I have seen some patterns with a squared off heel, and I suspect this might be one. I would have to crochet along next time I watch it to figure that part out! I thought you gave it a real go. A+ for effort! At first I was thinking it was a slipper, but when it went off the rails I had doubts…then I thought a bonnet, then a bag, then it just became a big crochet monster in my head. I was so relieved to see it was a slipper all along!

I know this doesn't help for this project, but those antique yarns all had the same size wrappers, so an 8 fold (Worsted/Aran) would have been a shorter length than the 4 fold (Sport) yarn in skeins. That's why it asked for 3 skeins of the 8 fold. That would have been about the same amount as the sport weight in length. I've had some antique yarns in my stash over the years.
