Driving Downtown Streets - Wacker Drive - Chicago Illinois USA - Episode 20.
Starting Point: Wacker Drive & Jackson Boulevard - goo.gl/maps/jj... .
Wacker Drive is a major street in Chicago, Illinois, United States, running along the south side of the main branch and the east side of the south branch of the Chicago River. The street is a multilevel street. The vast majority of it is double-decked; the upper level intended for local traffic, and the lower level for through-traffic and trucks servicing buildings on the road (and originally a dock). It is sometimes cited as a precursor to the modern freeway, though when it was built the idea was that pleasure vehicles would use the upper level.
The upper level is normally known as Upper Wacker Drive and the lower level is Lower Wacker Drive. A short part has a third level, sometimes called Lower Lower Wacker Drive
History
The original double-decker road, replacing South Water and River Streets, was completed in 1926 at a cost of $8 million and named after Charles Wacker. The 1926 section stretched from Lake Street to Michigan Avenue, the latter of which was also rebuilt into a two-level road.
In 2001-2002, Wacker Drive was redesigned and reconstructed between Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street. The original upper deck was crumbling, and the entire roadway did not meet modern standards for road widths and clearances. Using a specially-developed "flat-slab, longitudinally post-tensioned, reinforced, high-performance concrete cast-in-place system", the new road deck was expected to have a lifespan of 75-100 years.[5] Walkways along the river were meant to make the drive more pedestrian-friendly, while restoration of historic limestone elements and reproduction lighting evoked the drive's original 1926 appearance. The 20-month, $200-million project was completed on time and within budget.[6]
In spring of 2010, work commenced on rebuilding the north-south section of Wacker, from Randolph Street to Congress Parkway, including the upper and lower levels. This is a continuation of the Revive Wacker Drive project started in 2001.
Wacker is the only street to intersect both State Street (the east-west center line) and Madison Street (the north-south center line), although Lake Shore Drive also crosses both dividing lines.
In April 2014, The American Council of Engineering Companies awarded the Wacker Drive and Congress Parkway Reconstruction project its Grand Conceptor Award. The project team was led by TranSystems and included roadway, bridge and tunnel improvement work. The project involved complex staging to keep 135,000 vehicles and 150,000 pedestrians moving through the construction zone each day.
In popular media
The 1980 film The Blues Brothers used Wacker Drive as a setting. Also Batman- The Dark Knight 2008.

I love Chicago and it's suburbs. To me it's even better than NY. Such a clean city for it's size. I used to stay at a Congress hotel and I loved the location as everything was within the walking distance. I loved visiting Chicago much more than any other US city. Will go back.

The brown line (above ground subway trains) are a uniquely Chicago thing. I love that defining trait of the city, among other things. I can always immediately identify Chicago if I see a picture of the streets of it anywhere.

Chicago city centre looks to be only office towers. Is there much residential in the city centre? Maybe that's why the footpaths seem so quiet during the day, don't have the local resident foot traffic.

The loop is all office towers, Anything north of the river would be more residentials. He didn't goto neighborhoods like Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, etc... which is all residential.

Downtown is the business center. Fairly quiet compared to say.. Manhattan. Except for summer time when it actually becomes quite lively and is really beautiful with the sun and lighting. The majority of bars and party spots are north of the river, where there's actually fucking parking. Well kinda. Even then most people take the train or uber out there

I've lived in both cities for an extended period of time, so I can help you with this question. General Layout Chicago feels way bigger than Toronto. Toronto has a very very very small downtown/business area compared to Chicago Loop. Not many tall buildings in Toronto as compared to Chicago and in general feels less metropolitan. The architecture in Toronto is really kind of ugly, a couple of mismatched office buildings downtown, combined with some ugly looking 60's apartment buildings and newer condominums randomly jutting out across the city. Chicago architecture is much more beautiful and the tall buildings in the loop look uniform, plus along the river during the summer is absolutely beautiful and along Lake Michigan there are a ton of beaches and a bike path, while Toronto lake front is incredibly ugly and filled with railway tracks. If you are looking for the big city/metropolitan feel, then Chicago is for you. +1 Chicago Economics: Economically, its hard to compare because Chicago is a major economic center of a very large country, while Toronto is a major economic center of a smaller country. I would say Chicago probably has more big companies headquartered there than Toronto, because it is part of the USA. But at the sametime, Chicago does feel like its not growing at all, while Toronto does have more growth economically. +1 Toronto Nightlife: If you are into nightlife, I would say Chicago is probably better. There are way more clubs and bars and you have all of river north to party in. Toronto has an entertainment district but it is literally one or two streets. +1 Chicago Crime: This is an important factor to talk about, Chicago is generally safe in the Loop and in the north (river north, Logan square, Lincoln park, etc.). South Chicago and West Chicago are not safe and this is where the bad reputation of Chicago for crime comes from. Most people never visit these places anyways so its unlikely you will experience crime. But Toronto is 99% safe wherever you go. There is a Jane and Finch neighborhood, but I've been there multiple times and it is pretty safe in general. +1 Toronto People: I would say Toronto is probably 25% white, 25% Indian, 25% Chinese, and 25% other minorities. Chicago is 30% white, 30% black, and 30% hispanic and 10% other minorities.
