Hello Gemunu, DJV - Deshapremi Janatha Viyaparaya Thank you again for this lengthy interview with Nanadana Weerarathna. I seriously doubt Nandana Weerarathna had any definitive inside knowledge about Vijaya Kumaratunga's assassination and the then JVP's alleged involvement in that assassination. I would say Nandana's assessment and conclusion of Vijaya's assassination is either incomplete or inaccurate. I am referring to the allegation that the JVP central committee which was lead by Wijeweera came to the decision to eliminate Vijaya Kumaratunga. No argument about Vijaya's politics being delusional, self serving as well as an opportunistic betrayal of country's independence by colluding with JR Jayawaradene and Indian intelligence services. Vijaya Kumaratunga's politics weren't likely to had created him a rosy ending to his life, particularly in relation to Vijaya's political leanings towards the end of 1980's. Vijaya had a dream of becoming the next president and his political gambling(which he lost) was a result of that. Kumaratunga was no angel as a politician and would have ended up as a far more polarizing and dangerous politician than JR or Premadasa, had he managed to become the president after JR. No argument about Wijeweera's JVP enjoying the elimination of Vijaya Kumaratunga, as long as they weren't pointed at as the assassins. However, being a highly intelligent political analyst and a theorist himself, it was highly unlikely Wijeweera was anywhere near as stupid as Pirabaharan to make such a bad decision. Pirabaharan had no qualms when it came to his revengeful need to eliminate Rajiv Gandhi which he actually executed without thinking long and hard about the political consequences of such an assassination. Wijeweera was not likely to make such a stupid decision to turn Vijaya Kumaratunga into a martyr/hero by making such a decision to eliminate him by assassinating him in the most brutal way while creating a nationwide dislike or hatred of the JVP by assassinating popular actor turned popular politician. The person who would have directly benefitted most from Vijaya's elimination was Premadasa and his mission to become the president after JR. Most people today have no clue how street smart Premadasa was and how cleverly he orchestrated his killings and terrorism to keep himself distant from the battlefield. Wieweera's JVP and the broader organization DJV would have repeatedly warned Vijaya Kumaratunga to step aside from his association with Indian Intelligence needs and his collusions with JR Jayawardene's insane political manipulations. However, you can make an argument about the broader organization of DJV going behind the JVP central committee or Wijeweera to plot their own assassination hit on Vijaya Kumaratunga. Nevertheless, the most likely outcome would've been Premadasa's involvement or the UNP and their foreign intelligence strategists would have orchestrated the hit on Vijaya Kumaratunga to remit the assassination to JVP's account to gain an upper hand for the UNP governments operation to eliminate the JVP and Deshapremi Janatha Viyaparaya. Premadasa's clan would have seen Vijaya Kumaratunga as a direct threat and would've wanted him eliminated, while the JR's UNP government was cleverly exploiting Vijaya Kumaratunga. In a nutshell, had Vijaya Kumaratunga survived and continued to contest in the presidential election in 1988, Premadasa's presidential dream would've been seriously threatened. Also, you are wrong about alleged stories of the JVP cadres habitually going into government army soldier's houses and killing the relatives, mothers, father, brothers etc. Many of such killings, if not all, were the craftily orchestrated pro-UNP government's assassination squad jobs to disrepute the JVP(කලු බලල්ලු, කහ බලල්ලු, etc). It was also a common during that time for ordinary criminals to remit their crimes of murder and theft to DJV or JVP's account. JR's and Premadasa's assassination squads committed their murders well orchestrated to put the blame on the DJV and the JVP. As you may know, UNP government of Premadasa succeeded that by 1988 where people started developing a measurable anger towards the JVP for the killings, believing all those killings were executed by the JVP. No arguments the irreversible mistakes by the DJV's military wing had contributed towards the dire outcome in the end for the JVP. It was not just JR's or Premadasa's government that did not want DJV or the JVP to succeed in their armed struggle. Had the JVP and DJV succeeded in toppling the JR or Premadasa government in 1987-89 uprising, it would have been pro-socialist government of the JVP. India and particularly the West also did not want that. India didn't want that because JVP's policies against Indian involvement of Sri Lankan politics weren't any help to India for the regional dominance. Another socialist state in South Asia is the last thing the West would've needed at that time while they were working hard to topple the Soviet Union and other socialist states. The terror the Premadasa government unleashed on the JVP was aided by foreign intelligence and military support. Particularly, Premadasa exploited his anti-Indian, anti-IPKF("Indian Peace Keeping Force") sentiment for his advantage to get help from Western foreign intelligence. The methods Premadasa's murder squads used were directly provided by Western intelligence Do you homework to find out how and where the Premadasa government acquired the ideas and help to launch the heinous and barbaric acts his murder squads committed to quell and eliminate the uprising of the JVP and the DJV. Nandana Weerarathna also should know these things.

Get him and Mrs Gamanayake speak about things that people dont know before they die cos everybody dies. 3. People accuse JVP for abandoning Mrs Wijeweera. She lives in a facility it seems. Yesterday one MP from Matara spoke about it in Parliament. Its their duty to look after her who did an enormous sacrifice looking after the growing family while her husband was all over the place. They should be grateful and think of her mental status. She saw her husband bieng arrested and killed. Left alone with children under house arrest. Can you imagine bringing up girls in a navy camp. How much has suffered

Hello Gemunu, No debate about the history of the 1987-89 JVP's broader organization of DJV would've committed their own heinous and senseless murders. This was the gamble Wijeweera took and lost, by transforming the highly disciplined JVP into the broader DJV by connecting and combining with other political organizations and general public outside the JVP who were collectively furious with the JR's government after the infamous 1987 "peace" treaty with Rajiv Gandhi's India. We know Wijeweera lost the military control of the JVP as well as DJV due to infiltration by the UNP government operatives as well as myriad communication difficulties of that era(same issue that affected the 1971 uprising). Wijeweera obviously was no good military strategist, nor was he anywhere near skilled at orchestrating and managing an armed uprising. However, the overestimation of the capacity and capabilities of the JVP and DJV as well as the critical underestimation and miscalculation of Premadasa's megalomaniacal mind that had largely contributed towards the massive carnage of youth and the demise of the 1987-89 uprising. Wijeweera would have noticed the potential carnage and pending loss of the uprising by 1988. Nandana claims the sexual hypocrisies as a key factor that contributed toward the demise and failure of both 1971 and 1987-1989 uprisings by the JVP to topple the oppressive governments of that era. No doubt that has contributed but it is a minor issue and a pigeonholed view of the whole saga. By sexual hypocrisies, Nandana was probably referring to the dependency of the Western cultural habits that has been integrated into the culture of Sri Lankans, particularly the Sinhala Buddhists. Yes, that was and issue and still is. However, personal weaknesses of Wijeweera and his colleagues as military strategists and campaigners was the key issue for the failure. In a nutshell, they weren't that well organized to face a government oppression engine, weren't up to scratch with their military strategies and intelligence operations. The JVP or the DJV weren't simply fighting JR's or Premadasa's government mass murderers. They were fighting the whole world of regressive politics of the West, in addition to Indian geopolitics of that era while the socialist block of the world was fast collapsing. The military wing of the JVP and the DJV made bad decisions during the worst period and paid the price with some hundred thousand youth lives. We have never recovered from that massive loss of irreversible gene pool loss. Compare the JVP decision to create the broader organization of DJV in 1987 with today's JVP's creation of the NPP. The dangers and problems that affected the DJV in 1987-1989 are still a reality in 2024. It was the frothing anger of the people in 1987 toward JR's action of kneeling in front of Rajiv Gandhi's India that created the DJV and it's the same mass public anger that elevated the NPP into popularity in 2022 and into popular government now. However, the DJV did not have the discipline or resistance to infiltration that the JVP had which massively contributed to the demise of both the JVP and DJV. Same or similar dangers and drawbacks also exist in this NPP government. The broader political movement of NPP may need a shake up in the future. Smooth and quick social-political transformations is a myth. We've never seen such outcomes in human history. NPP governments ups and downs are yet to be witnessed. Their mission to rebuild the country will not be a cakewalk. It will be an absolute steep uphill struggle that will demand super careful round the clock attention to detail and strategy. I know the JVP central committee within the NPP had to say things like their plans to rebuild the country within months or years for the political popularity purposes, particularly the times that lead to the recent elections. However, in reality, the real and long lasting political, economic, social and cultural progress will take a decade or two. Gain without some significant pain won't be a reality.

Further adding Gothama Budhdha never created Buddhist religion, his teaching was to explain and exit the physical world. Today a handful of people are re visiting true Buddhist teaching and practice the journey to Nibbana. This tiny island is the only place in the world (Not India at all) true Budhdhist teaching was preserved, preached and practiced. The land where Gothama was born. Not India.
