Les, Zambia became independent in1964 & not 1969. Not nit picking 😊 just correcting an old codger. Lovely talk Les. Brought back memories of all the crazy things that we did in Rhodesia

Can't wait for the next one. Thank you Bokkie for your service. When listening to your reminiscing it struck me again that people who hadn't grown up in Rhodesia would not understand how we get up to all types of mischief which anywhere else would probably be considered as terrible and deserving of punishment, yet that very seldom happened unless completely egregious and serious. I know we considered it not so,and indeed just normal exuberance and even if loaded into the Black Maria for a trip to a cell for a few hours , there were never hard feelings afterwards and we would drink together when next in town. Oh boy what a time it was!!! Cheers

You go to admire that generation of fine men, just listening to their thoughts of a by-gone era is very stimulating and nostalgic at the same time.

Brilliant interview - respectful of the military experiences but have not laughed so much in a long time at some of your humorous anecdotes. Look forward to your next expose, Bokke 😊

Thanks for the memories Les, you were so much a part of Enkeldoorn and the Stella’s,you are one of a kind. Many suppers with my folks and family, legendary Batman suits and your ‘twin exhaust’ Tons of humour in those hectic war days over beers in the Pub and the Body box…..you always made life lighter. Thanks to Hannes for this interview .

Great Chat, Thanks Les and John/Hannes. Brought back many memories as a fellow Ground Coverage Byo West. My late Brother in Law was in Romeo Troop SU around your time. He got mauled by a elephant cow, but survived. Mitt Anderson was his stick leader. You may recall the incident. As the sang after a contact Amane baba, Musandecheme, Kana daafa, ne Hondo. God Bless Guys.

And Les, in Selukwe, when you came to the Railway Block club one Friday night and said that the party was at Jennings’ house? When we all went to Jennings’ house, there was no party. You said later that thereafter Jennings wanted you killed and he sent you into the TTL alone for some weeks. And it wasn’t Ian who sent the beers out to the guardhouse at the gate - it was Janet.

Re your comment about what happened to black members afterwards, I remember being in camp near Mt Darwin in 74 with a few guys. We had a few beers, and one of the guys said to me, ‘Remember, we’re on your side - don’t let us down!’…..Who knows what happened to them. We had a guy in our stick, Const. Ndoro, I think. I noticed that his bushcraft was excellent. I asked him who taught him. He said, ‘Nobody - I taught myself.’ He said , ‘If they catch you, they shoot you. If they catch me, I’m fucked!’ I did hear though that he carried on in the ZRP.

Milne!! What about i) searching an SAA Boeing 707 after a bomb threat when still drunk after a night at Fife Ave. and sleeping on the floor of my room ii) when the new swimming pool at Fife Ave was being officially opened by Dispol you walked through the crowd just wearing a costume, goggles and flippers, past Dispol and walked straight into the pool iii) on our first COIN training trip in the bush you came across a huge python and, instead of using the silent 'snake' signal, you came running back shouting at the top of your voice, "F***ing snake!!!!!" (Thanks for arranging for me to stay with Jock & Fridelle when I went to the Falls for court.)

Thanks for sharing Bolkie. Just for the record, interaction between Brian Pitt and Herbert Shungu (Sectorial Commander) immediately preceded the incident involving the SAP members. BTW, love the inclusion in the intro of pic myself and Jim Ruddick at Vic Falls!
