Another fascinating interview. This sort of insight is priceless, even after decades of chatting with people about these various topics, Barry is mentioning things I was entirely unaware of. Keep it coming gents. 👍

Thank you so much Barry I was enthralled by your stories. My father was the Govt Quantity Surveyor for Matabeleland from the late 60's through to the end of the war and I used to love the school holidays when we could travel out into the rural areas and he interacted with the Intaf DC's and local chiefs. I was always taught by my father to respect all people and particularly the local tribes. I did a few Rhodesian School Exploration trips inyo the bush to study the different sciences and was always very impressed by the DC's that I had the privilege to spend time with. Pity the Rhodesian Govt did not pay more attention and fund the Internal Affairs a bit better. I am also aware of the Rhodesian Army just dumping many young city slicker white national servicemen into Guard Force with limited training and viŕtually no knowledge of the culture of the poor people placed into the keeps towards the end of the war

Barry - you have to write a book. This contemporary history would be of interest to so many people (including academics involved in the history and administration of former colonies). One of my favourite books is "To the banks of the Zambezi" by TV Bulpin. I look forward to your book, " Between the banks of the Zambezi & Limpopo", written by Barry Mulder.

Thankyou for these intriguing insights into the origins of our fledgling nation.. so much good faith, ultimately perverted by devious foreign interests. Just imagine what we could have achieved, minus the cursed self-interested politicians. I camped with my Dad at the confluence of the Sabi/Lunde, it was so wild the Eland and Kudu stood and looked at us. Supper was bream, and a duck cooked over the coals - delicious, even with a few No. 8 shot in it..

Fascinating again. My grandfather was in a similar role in South West Africa around 1920. There is quite a lot of overlap in the sorts of things they did to develop the areas.

The Portuguese kicked the Arabs out of LM about 1500. In 1552 and 1554 there were two Portugese shipwrecks a bit South of Durban. The area was busy with non African influences.
