It's a 68. He had a built 2000cc engine in it that I'm getting. And he had dual 44mm single barrel solex carbs on it. Said back In the day it was fast. I'm in the Houston area too. So would be cool to get you to check it out. Lol

For those who didn’t catch it… you need to start the nut on the lower stud for the starter before you tighten the nut on the “D” head bolt, because the body of the starter is too close to the top of the stud, so you can’t get the nut on the stud unless you pull the starter off the stud a half inch or so…which you can’t do if you tighten the top bolt first.

Why I hate those T-style engine stands: They can tip over easily since they are not squared up to prevent tipping. Now you can add a piece of angle iron at the front with wheels to make it like an "H", making it harder to tip over. Also, those engine mounts are for VW Type 1,2, and 3 engines. What you paid for a new engine stand like that is about the same as a Jegs 80041 engine stand, which handles more engines including the Type 4. www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/80041/10002/-1 Also the high Zinc motor oil for break-in is a wise move. A lot og guys never realize that the "new" engine does need the zinc to coat the parts on first start up. Just my observations. Moe

question...does the jegs stand allow enough space to mount the starter housing he just made? It looks like the jegs standoffs are way to short to permit the sawed off bell housing to be bolted on.

FIRST of all... set the timing and dwell per specs. Gas in the water bottle doesn’t look good. Why not clear? You need a fuel intake hose safely run to fresh gasoline container. A filter between pump & carb will tell you when gas is flowing. You need power to electric shut-off jet & choke. Fill float chamber thru vent tube. Large industrial needle & plunger, a squirt of gas down the throat a couple times.There are specs in a Bentley of preliminary carb adj screw settings before you ever try to run an engine with unknown carburetor. Get all that right, it will start right up, fast idle & stay running. If engine internals are new, keep RPM up in 2000-2500 range for cam/lifters break-in. Let it get up to 150-180F a couple times then change oil & adjust valves after complete cool-down. We did this over 2000 times.

I noticed that you have the idle jet with the fuel shutoff solenoid on it. I couldn't tell if you had run power to that solenoid. That could be your idle problem if you didn't run a power wire to it.

For safety sake, and I cannot stress this enough, never use abrasive wheels on soft metals. (Aluminum, brass, magnesium, etc) Soft metals will clog the pores of the wheel and could cause it to break apart at high RPMs. And do not operate a grinder with the guard off. If the guard is in the way, you're using it wrong. The right tool for this would be a reciprocating saw or jigsaw. That being said, the use of an old trans case as an engine test stand is a great idea. It will save a lot of fabrication and take all of the guess work out.

Ok so i got my vw bench-tested! It starts ok and sounds strong! I have a can of gas attached to fuel lines. The engine dies within few seconds, seems like the carb is thirsty for fuel that I poured on top for initial fireup. Question: Is it ok if i rev the engine hard so the fuel pump can get primed and start sucking that gasoline? Or do u think its not a good idea to rev the engine as its pretty new for a rebuild? How do i keep running it for like 10 mins? 😊
@JWClassicVW
@JWClassicVW Жыл бұрын
Try elevating the fuel can above the pump... Definitely not ok to Rev a new engine.
@VolksStokes
@VolksStokes Жыл бұрын
@@JWClassicVW Aha! It was about to work with that but then i realized fuel lines leaking and when i disconnected the gas can, i saw a stream of fuel being released back into the can so that means we did create a fuel pressure!! Woohoo! Now i have to leak my wallet to buy more fuel lines
@VolksStokes
@VolksStokes Жыл бұрын
@@JWClassicVW Ok so i installed new fuel lines at carb and pump. Seems like these hoses are a lil bigger in diameter as they fit easily and i clamped it tight. Here is what happened: Fuel pump worked as the fuel got sucked into filter (felt heavy) and then engine ran for a lil longer as it got fuel supply. But i got nervous as i see white smoke from manifolds both ends front and rear, and light black smoke from muffler. I wonder if im burning any pistons in there or too much fuel dumped in? And then the real scary part: Fuel gushes down the carb. I had snugged the carb tight to manifold so im shocked to see fuel gushing down. Now im stubbed and wondering what went wrong

If you don’t mind telling me about wiring. I’ve never done this before and im afraid of short circuiting it. So the negative of battery (black wire - terminal) just gets connected to engine frame and acts like a ground? The positive/red terminal goes to the starter. Then black negative thick wire from starter goes to generator and a thin wire from same negative part of starter goes to coil. Question: where does the positive of coil goes to?
@JWClassicVW
@JWClassicVW 3 жыл бұрын
Hey what's going on brother... it is really simple actually. The only ground required is a clean ground connection to from the battery - to the engine case or the transmission housing I cut. The stater gets its ground through the transmission housing. The rest of the connections are battery +. From the battery + to the starter large nut... there are 2 either one works. Then a small jumper wire from the large nut to the solenoid spade lug connection, I split this connection with a push button as when applied the stater will engage. You'll also need a + feed to the + side of the coil. Off the coil + you'll also have a jumper to the carb idle solenoid and choke (if you have a single center mount carb). Coil - is only for the distributor green condenser wire. Additionally I ran an extra large + from the generator to the stater 2nd large nut for charging.

Hello - First time trying this and electrical stuff is not my strong suit. When running the cable from the starter to the generator - where do you attach it to on the generator? Also the red wire from the starter goes to the positive side of the coil, right? You didn't mention which one. Thanks.
@JWClassicVW
@JWClassicVW 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Lance, there is no need to hook up the generator really. As long as the battery is charged you should be good. So as far as what needs to be hooked up the starter needs a good power source from the battery, I used jumper cables. You'll also need to run a power to the positive side of the coil. For the starter solenoid you can use a push button like I did.
