I picked up this engine along with 4 others and a 1968 bug from an estate sale 2 weeks ago. I tried to get it running on the back of the truck but it did not want to go. so lets see what was wrong and if it will run now. i

Back in the late 70's or early 80's, I lucked into a great deal on a perfectly straight mid-60's bug convertible that had not run in many years. I cleaned the points and carburetor and got it started and it "RAN ON ONE CYLINDER". I knew there had to be "little or no" compression on the other three cylinders, so I simply popped the spring clamps off the valve covers with my handy Snap-On gasket-scraper/pry-bar and freed the stuck valves with the same tool and then it was two, then three, then four. As each cylinder came back on line it would sputter and blow a cloud of rust colored smoke out the exhaust, but from that point forward it ran great.

That is a decent running engine. I also learned how to check the oil pressure in my bug, I have not hooked up any electrical so I don't have a dash light, but that is an easy way to get an idea of oil pressure. Thanks for that tip! Later -Ed

I had a job for a short time, converting VW engines to Airplane engines, we modded them a lot. We replaced the heads with special ones we milled, installed chevy lifters, electronic ignition (that we built), each cylinder had dual spark plugs. We installed total seal piston rings, and installed a super charger. Horse power went from 40 to 75. The company used to be called Home Built Aircraft Products International. HAPI engines. They may still be in business.

M773 Most aircraft piston engines are wet sump. Quite a few are carbureted as well. For aircraft use, a carburetor heat box would have to be utilized.
@Stepclimb5 жыл бұрын
M773 For a VW engine to be used in an aircraft, it will most likely not be an aerobatic aircraft since the power output is less than 100HP. Again, MOST piston aircraft flying today use horizontally opposed engines with wet sumps. I’m talking about Lycoming O-320, O-360, O-540 and their IO counterparts as well as the Continental IO-360, 520 and 550 variants are all wet sump engines. Pitch attitudes in normal, non aerobatic flight do not come close to unporting the oil pickup.

This engine moves around on the "test" stand even more than my diesel engine does. lol Air cooling is so important for these engines. The best flow comes from higher RPMS. Ironically the most heat comes from low rpm loads. Lots of people don't understand that you can't lug these engines and expect them to survive. When working an air cooled engine you must keep the rpms up. I know mustie knows this. Just tossing it out there for any new VW air cooled engine aficionados. My point is to make sure you guys educate your significant others that will drive one of these or they will blow up your engine. Ask me how I know. :)

I notice you like to torture your starters, especially motor cycle starters. I worked repairing starters and generators/alternators for about 20 years. The duty cycle of a Bosch starter is 1 to 2, one minute crank, two minutes rest. Motorcycle starters are about 1 to 1 as they can cool a bit faster. If you get them too hot, you melt the solder on the armature and toast the starter. You've been lucky so far.
@oldodger5 жыл бұрын

I have wondered about this in many vids of Mustie trying to get an engine started: the engine has gas, has air, has compression, and has spark, and yet won't start, or sometimes even pop, until it has been cranked many many times. So, what is changing in the cylinder(s) during the cranking that finally allows it to start?
@mustie16 жыл бұрын
the valves are seating (light rust) allowing the compression to come back up so then it will have enough to run,

Hi Mustie, big fan from the U.K, thanks for all your videos! I have a question for you if you wouldn’t mind... when you set up your 34 PICT 3 carbs, what are your go-to bypass screw and volume control screws adjustments for just getting an engine going? The majority of answers I have read seem to say 2 and 1/2 turns on each screw out to get started? Cheers! Jim

Time to rebuild that 60 hp engine. Now the 68 model had a 57 hp engine. The 60 hp came out in 1971. I built more of these engine than I could ever count. Back in the 70's you could get all the parts you need for $100 to $150 to build one of these engine. I still wish I had bought a 67 beetle with the 53 hp engine, but for some reason I didn't. Yes I'm kicking myself right now for not doing it. Today people want a lot of money for that model. The 67 model was the best one Volkswagen ever made.....Well after watching the whole video it looks like you can get more life out of that engine. That particular engine had a carburetor that never worked very well, even when you bought the car band new. Yes that carburetor sucked big time. I myself bought a band new 72 Super Beetle and that carburetor was ever that great. Tax and all I paid $2,291.00 for mine back in 1972.....

A little tidbit from my college VW wrenching days...if you have the original Bosch style plug wires, always tuck the air boot UNDER the tin rather than leaving it outside. That way the cooling air will force it to seal against the tin rather than blowing it off.
