The Rach 2nd Symphony is a total emotional experience of heart-wrenching themes and musical development! The instrumental perfection of the writing is historic and leads one to know that Rach was always a piano composer. This symphony is not done as much as it should because we are in a kind of anti-romantic stage of classical music performance. Instead of realizing that the Rachmaninoff repertory will never die because all of his compositions are so accessible to so many, so heartfelt to even those who are not hard-core classical music lover, and so dramatic in the development of its themes. I find so much good in this realization of the symphony for piano and orchestra. Of course, the piano takes much of the instrumental perfection away from the performance, but it has its own perfection. You can almost hear the voice of Rachmaninoff commenting on his wonderfully perfect symphony in the piano part!!! You cannot spoil perfection!!!!! This symphony needs to continue to live in our symphony concert repertoire. If it takes this "piano arrangement" to do this, so be it!!!

I've been a fan of Rachmaninoff for rather a lot of years, and discovered Anna Fedorova through KZbin about a year ago. But I hadn't heard of this work until tonight, when curiosity drove me to listen. I'm so glad I did. It is simply fascinating! Anna Fedorova showed her customary musical brilliance - she always seems able to deliver an abundance of talent, a healthy dose of charm, and pure musicality that puts her in the top echelons of her profession. And the orchestra were up to the challenge of a complex work that can hardly be described as one of the 'routine' or 'bread and butter' pieces with which they may be familiar. I once knew a gentleman called Warenburg, and it was that name, as much as anything, that caught my eye. He was someone quite different, I should add. This musicologist/composer has a rare talent of his own. He seemed able to get inside the mind of Rachmaninoff, and 'unpick' his beautiful 2nd symphony, and a few other pieces, it seems, almost as if he had become Rachmaninoff when he was creating the symphony, and working out the characteristic lines and harmonies that were his trademark. One can picture the master, slaving at his piano, trying this and that harmony; this and that sequence, until he 'distilled' just the right one when, with a satisfied flourish, perhaps, he would scribe it quickly on his manuscript, try it again just to be sure, and then complete the details: note length and pitch; chords and timing, before moving on to the next sequence. It was thus a masterclass, and worth every hour Mr Warenburg spent at the task. And it might even help us appreciate Rachmaninoff yet more, if that be possible...! Thank you Mr Warenburg, and thank you Miss Fedorova and KZbin!

As always, Anna's delivery is beautifully exquisite! As a musical piece, this is a very interesting "what if". To those who are dissing it, keep in mind that Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony hasn't be exiled to Never Never Land and there is no reason to be critical of this work. Do you know how many versions there are of Musorsky's Night On Bald Mountain? They are all fascinating! It's quite alright for virtuoso''s like these musicians to "explore" Rachmaninoff's original concept. Step back, take a deep breath and appreciate it for the sincere tribute it is! BRAVO!!!!!!!

It seems to be in fashion these days to make new arrangements of Rachmaninoff's music. The 2nd Elegique Piano Tro has been arranged as a piano concerto. The two suites for 2 pianos have been arranged for piano and orchestra and the Variations on a Theme of Corelli for piano solo have been arranged for orchestra sans piano. Resphigi with Rachmaninoff's blessing (and program notes) arranged 5 of the Etudes Tableau for symphony orchestra.

This piano arrangement by Warenberg is a great success and he has done indeed a lot of job! I have nothing more to add since the comments of “J J Townley Sometime-composer of Piano Concertos” are very well-aimed! I have literally my “brain washed” with this transcription so I can hardly tolerate the original version of the symphony but I do miss the second movement though. Technically the 5th concerto sounds as difficult as the 3rd one but Anna Fedorova’s interpretation is exquisite! Many many thanks for the link!

This is getting more popular than Rachmaninoff's 1st and 4th. Incredible that an arrangement of a symphony should attract no less than five major pianists eager to perform it in concert. Opening similar to the 3rd Concerto in that the main theme is played by unison notes an octave apart but it quickly departs into other territories. Warenberg must have done one hell of a job transcribing it judging by its popularity. It shows just how hungry people are for anything Rachmaninoff-piano-and-orchestra. It should also demonstrate to the music apparatchik running the industry that the public at large doesn't like all this atonal post modern stuff contemporary composers throw at them that gets one splashy premiere and then is completely forgotten. I hope they learn a lesson from this symphony cum concerto, but i doubt they will. Anna is brilliant as usual. I hope this gets as popular as her Rach 2nd Concerto. Thanks, Jacob for the link.
@JJTownley_Classical-Composer7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right, prof, it IS the purists dissing the concerto even though it is a 1st-class arrangement. Had it been done "on the cheap" then maybe she'd have a point w/ regard to the arrangement itself, but not in principle. Now just to digress slightly to make a point, I wrote a neo-romantic Piano Concerto No 2 in C Minor inspired by Rachmaninoff's own. Putting aside the fact mine in no way approaches the quality of Rachmaninoff's, I had one prominent conductor in the Southland who was kind enough to listen to it say, "Yes, it's beautiful and all, Mr Townley, but do we really need a Fifth Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto?" His point being, I suppose, that there is no room for a 5th Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto, even by Mr. Rachmaninoff himself.
@Gerhold1027 жыл бұрын
Ho-Ho! Two men being snobbish about people being snobbish about this transcription! It's as valid as any popular transcription is - good of Warenberg to do this labour of love. As to it being more popular than the 1st or 4th - well they remain largely undiscovered, lurking behind the monoliths of the two Concerti they 'bookend'. I listened to the 1st this evening - a Zimerman version - and was reminded again of just how luscious this is. The 4th is something entirely different. I'm not sure, if all these three were being played in three concert halls built around a town square, which I'd elect to listen to. Perhaps this - because it's nuances aren't clear to me yet and neither is its validity. But I'm not finickey about SVR - I'll 'consume' almost everything he composed.

Because it's a fake. There is no Rachmaninov 5th concerto. Rachmaninov barely was able to get the 4th one done. He had to use melodies he had composed in 1915 (or so) in Russia and one of his friends, a conductor named Igor Buketoff, said the orchestration was below his level.

It's almost as though Warenberg said to himself, "let's throw piano into No. 2 as a showpiece for Anna". There are many wonderful moments...but many that are just not meant for busy piano...especially the adagio, arguably the most beautiful fifteen minutes ever written, which lost the tearjerking emotion of No. 2. First time I heard this Warenberg thing. Not bad but I believe that Rachs 2ª symphony is a sufficiently great masterpiece in itself and any arrangements around it are just a waste of time. I'm not alone considering that Rachmaninoff was as great an orchestral composer than a pianist. All his symphonies and orchestral pieces (Isle of the dead and so on) are great pieces. He his known better by his piano compositions because he was perhaps the better (and the most expensive) pianist of his generation and the American hype helps a lot. Fedorova is great and fights her way along this mess bravely but I bet she lets go a sigh of relieve when finally gets to the end. I never enjoyed bizarre things like the "complete" 10th of Mahler or the 3rd of Elgar. Gives me the creeps.One of these days we will have to endure Mozart symphonies 42 to 50 made by some enthusiast.

@@josephcrespo8193 Dana was an Irish singer in the 1970's. In 1976 she had a hit with a song called "Never going to fall in love again" the melody of this song was based on the 2nd movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd symphony. Dana also had a Eurovision Song Contest hit with the song "All Kinds of Everything" in 1970. I believe her career has now changed more towards politics.

I owe Eric Carmen, because of those 2 songs ("All by myself" and "Never gonna fall in love again") he introduced me to the great Rachmaninoff.
