no Vladdy extension equals no Shapiro/Atkins extensions IMO. they should have never bothered with Soto. I said the Blue Jays should have signed Vladdy the day after Tattis signed with the same contract.
@ryanb6281Күн бұрын
At this point they need to offer vladdy something like 14yr 500M. That works out to just under 36m a year. Vladdy is probably not getting more than that in free agency. If he rejects that then explore the possibility of trading him because you cant let him walk for nothing.
@duffyy1Күн бұрын
Agree with everything. Resign Vladdy and free agents will follow.
@lordbacon4972Күн бұрын
Vladdy is for sure not going to give Jays any home town discount. He had to go to arbitration for a measly $1M more or something like that. That kind of shit by Jays front office burns bridges and Jays have burned their bridge to Vladdy. Vladdy has every right to ask for whatever he wants and not settle for anything less. Vladdy does not owe Jays anything. I hope he gets a huge contract.

@@SINISTER_CONCEPTSAnd the point is anyone WOULD want to if they had a structured plan from the farm system development all the way to 5 years down the road. Soto knows Cohen will keep spending money to try to get back to the playoffs. The blue jays won’t spend and have no plan.
@SINISTER_CONCEPTSКүн бұрын
@ Soto was never going to Toronto you have to pay double tax there because he’s definitely not gonna live there .second he took Mets offer for money if Boston outbid Mets he would be a Red Sox if the marlins would have outbid Mets he would be a marlin. Mets don’t have a farm system like that, and if the spending was a thing he would have already either traded for vladdy and immediately extended him or signed polar bear already. Mets need pitching what’s gonna hurt them if they don’t sign a big bat to hit behind Soto he will be walked like Barry bonds , this coming from a Yankee fan I hate we lost him but we knew we weren’t going to be outbid by cohen.

To be honest the best move of the off season right now was the Yankees NOT signing Soto. They've gotten better in several areas and look like a better team today and they can still add pieces! If the Jays find they can't sign Vlad then they need to trade him ASAP and use the same strategy as the Yankees. Send Vlad to the Mets for Vientos and some prospects.

It wasn't an absolute make or break move, but the Orioles swooped in and snatched slugger Tyler O'Neill (31 homers this season) from the Blue Jays. He's better than any outfielder Toronto has, and as a native of Canada, he no doubt would have loved to have signed with the Jays. To add insult to injury, O's GM is typically slow as molasses methodical, but he was on it quick this time and got a quality player for three years at a relatively inexpensive price. Meanwhile, Toronto now will need to shell out big bucks to sign a power hitting outfielder like Anthony Santander or Teoscar Hernández if they're still around. Vlad and Bo are quality bats in the lineup, but there isn't a whole lot to build around them, though Andrés Giménez is a nice addition. I keep hearing how the Blue Jays are one of the favorites to sign Corbin Burnes. and I'm like, "How?" Maybe if it's just the money he's after, because this team can hardly be considered a serious playoff contender as it's now configured and I think that has to factor into his decision-making. As you state, Jim, it's imperative that they extend Vlad asap and hope they aren't too late to the finish line. There are just too many "what ifs" for Blue Jay fans to be very comfortable.
@paulvaughan35573 сағат бұрын
One can assume Vladdy was waiting to see what Ohtani and Soto were going to get. He may of never signed long term unless the jays dramatically overpaid to the market pre Ohtani. He will need a contract stating with a 5 now.
@Wo1fLarsenКүн бұрын
Why did they wait anyway? Once Ohtani didn't sign, they should've immediately extended Vlad. Gotta go to $440mil now.
@MussellRartinКүн бұрын
Lets be real, $450M isn't going to do it with Vlad being the top hitting FA in 2025. Has to start with a 5 for Vlad to even consider extending. And Shatkins isn't capable of getting a deal done. I still hate that everybody wants to trade Bo when 2 years ago everybody saying Bo should be a priority signing. This front office just incompetent af

@DrWestlakeКүн бұрын
In a totally impartial view, the best thing the Jays can do is let it ride with Bo Bichette, trade Guerrero to Seattle, who is desperate to do something big, and would probably overpay. People forget, the farm system in Toronto is horrible, and they should be reloading it. The worst thing the Jays are doing is letting their front office be in lame duck status with only one year left on their contract. They should give them a two year extension and see what they can do to sell off assets and hit a quick reset. Set a reasonable goal of at least 85 wins by 2026, and they'll give them an extension. Right now the only reason they are trying to resign Vlad and haven't traded him is because they are going to burn everything down to try and save their jobs. Objectively, even with Vlad, the Blue Jays are probably the 4th best team in the AL East and that doesn't make the playoffs. If I was Guerrero, I wouldn't sign with a team with so many holes, old players, expiring contracts, and no farm system to lean on. The guys I'm getting rid of are Bassitt, Gausman, Varsho, and Kirk. There are enough teams looking for catching help, that pulling a AAA piece for Kirk would be ideal. Maybe send Kirk and Varsho with some cash to the Braves for C Drake Baldwin, SP Hurston Waldrep, and OF Jarred Kelenic. The goal being to turn over the roster and trade down for years of control and younger players (Varsho to Kelenic and Kirk to Baldwin), add controllable starters (Waldrep), while adding money $11.8 to ATL; $2.3 to TOR; $9.5M savings). Bassitt and Gausman would be about saving money and getting young controllable players. IN the midseason, should Bichette return to form the choice would be to extend him, trade him, or keep him without extension, if a QO seems possible. Should Toronto shed most of those contracts, Burnes would be in play and let's not pretend it's not all about money. While Berrios is the whipping boy for the pitching staff, he's not bad and not crazy expensive for the next two seasons. Should Manoah return to form, Burnes, Berros, Manoah, Waldrep, and Bowden would be an okay rotation, leaving money to address other needs offensively. Though I still believe Vlad needs too go either way, he's going to be looking at $500M over 12-13 years, and that's more than the Blue Jays can afford with a farm system that is short on cheap supporting cast. The Mariners could afford to pay Julio and Vlad because their farm system is so deep, they can just dump expensive players for more prospects and trust in their development team. A luxury the Jays don't have.

@nunzi83Күн бұрын
What about a trade with the Mets for Bichette. Move Bo to second base or maybe see some time at 3rd. It’s not a big need for the Mets but I think Bo would do great in that lineup. Maybe send McNeil with some money to the jays along with a prospect etc. or send Marte with paying half of his remaining 20 million. McNeil might be better for the jays bc of control and most importantly the versatility.

Varsho is on Pace to have more WAR than Vladdy after 6 seasons...but he's gonna be shy due to his injury. (Value is value, but I get the discrepancies with WAR) We're not talking about a 9 WAR guy. We're talking about negative fielding value and the worst base running in the game. Impactful bad. If Vlad chases Soto to NY, then we don't want him. Forget what he may do, let's think about what he didn't do. Which was anything positive when we needed him. To be fair, he's only ever been the piece to add to a team, not the centerpiece..that's why this whole thing failed and the Jays tried so hard to get a legit superstar. We're not in a position to pay him for 40-50hrs only to remain desperate in the market for another guy who can actually hit 40+. That's terrible team building run on emotions, not logic. I like Vlad and my emotions are involved too. Of course I want him here, but it's very easy to understand why it's come to this.
@NotExplicableКүн бұрын
Fielding just gives you a chance to win, fielding doesn't mean you can win, Varsho also doesn't play most of the games staying healthy because playing elite defense isn't sustainable on the body, its why Springer got injured its why Varsho can't stay on the field, its why kiermaier is always hurt, even the kid Loperfido got hurt hitting head and missed games just when he started to hit better. Also the value on defense is diminished if you can't produce runs, you need anchors in your lineup that increases the value of other hitters Vladdy is carring that load for the most part and he's younger than Varsho and most of the aged prospects. Vladdy hitting makes the team hitting better, when Vladdy gets on base that puts pressure on pitchers to not give up the next hit to a Kirk and makes whomever the next hitters job more predictable. It also takes the stress off Varsho from hitting or falling into bad hitting mechanics because he has to produce and carry a load which frees Varsho up to focus on defense. You can't pay these dudes 15-20mil to pay defense and lose you won't make money and keep fans 5 tool players also get injured trying to do everything, Trout, Griffey, Acuna etc you catch pitch your value of player solely on being a 5-Tool perfect player falling from heaven, you need Big Papi and then Edwins to go far and hit everyday if no one believes in your product or ability to build in un-ideal situations to your philosophy what are you doing? The Jays had an ideal set-up for modern baseball and blew it you could of traded for Varsho for a bag of chips. The American media likes to undervalue our prospects to bait trade us just look at mlbs mock Vladdy trade lol Also even the box office value that Vladdy provides allows you to pay players. Vladdy vs Ohtani, Vladdy vs Cole, Vladdy vs Scherzer He gives you a chance to steal games against elite pitchers or relievers. He beat-up Cole on an impossible pitch inside off the plate, and hit two Homer's against Scherzer in a game while under 25 years of age. Generational talent that wants to stay rarely falls into your lap and finding Generational talent is rare because even if you trade for 1 doesn't mean that he will stay thus you lose twice and it sets back your franchise long-term unless you have an insane farm system even then its easier for places like San Diego with the climate and close proximity to Latin America to get international prospects players to come.
