From the perspective of someone who isn't a huge Pink Floyd fan (respect them for their artistry, but haven't heard a song that blew me away and astonished me), after hearing both this version and the original, I felt that Nightwish took a very minimalist song and took it a couple of levels farther with the elements they've added (the additional deeper keyboard sounds, heavier guitar and bass rifts along with a more inticate -but not overbearing- guitar solo, more emphatic drum sounds, and the passionate vocals from Marco) while keeping all of the original elements of the song. No disrespect to either Pink Floyd or those who really like the original version better, but I can't say it resonated with me. If I had ever heard it on the radio, it would have sounded bland and missing something to me, and I would probably have skipped it not too far into the song (granted, this is coming from someone who mostly listens to things like Industrial, Alternative, Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Modern, New Wave, Grunge, and various types of Metal). Again, no disrespect just not as much of a fan of minimalist sounds like the original, so the NW version sounds more powerful to me by comparison.

No, the band was about to break up befroe they ever met Tarja's husband (Marcelo). They were in difficulties already back in the Wishmaster tour before came to South America. Tuomas couldn't stand Marcelo because of his own romantic interest on her. In addition the Tuomas-Tarja drama there was that boys wanted longer tours with more gigs, and both Tarja and her follower Anette just couldn't take as intense touring as the boys, and I suppse they didn't have so much hunger for success as the boys. So Tarja kept suggesting shorter tours and less concerts, and boys saw that as a major hindrance to the band's success. Marko wrote into his book, after Tarja suggested cutting off North America from the tour: "everyone were pissed limitlessly. The cancellation of American tour meant big hole in the touring earnings, and this happened right when the best album of the band was rising there. This meant losing the biggest market in the world" (Original Finnish quote: "Kaikkia vitutti ihan suunnattomasti. Tiesihän jenkkirundin peruuntuminen isoa lovea koko rundiporukan tienesteihin, ja tämä tapahtui juuri kun bändin paras levy oli nousussa siellä. Oltiin hukkaamassa maailman suurin markkina-alue") and: "C_nt, I burned my sleeves. I had been watching this acting out for so long, and when I was sleepy and not quite sober, I told that I quit. I couldn't take her unwillingness any more. Australia and Japan were new regions to the band, and it would have been idiotic to cut them off." Also in the open letter boys attacked Tarja saying that in the next world tour she would tour only two weeks at a time maximum. So there were definitely other issues than Marcelo's face.

@@Aurinkohirvi the impressive and elaborate live shows are one, if not the most important, USP of nightwish. I wonder how tarja would have covered the production and touring costs with "only two weeks at a time maximum" world tour snippets. Let me guess: not her problem?

@@CaffeineNightOwl The band did have pauses while touring the globe, sometimes they were on the road over a month, sometimes less than two weeks. Sure it would cut gigs some off, but it wouldn't be the end of it all. Tarja was suggesting cutting smaller gigs away anyway, and instead doing less but bigger ones. Which earned Tuomas claiming that she wanted more money from the gigs.

@Damien Maynard This migraine thing is total BS as far as I'm concerned. Is there a reference to this except people making speculations into facts? How can something cause so much torcher? As you probably know a migraine is not just a headache it is an assault on your whole body the pain is not only in your head but throughout the body, it affects your vision, your sense of smell, your hearing and of course your stomach. As someone who has dealt with migraines since I was twenty three (I am now in my fifty’s) I can tell you as excruciating and debilitating as they are it is possible to function and even work with them if you have the focus and drive to not let them control your life. Being a single parent and not ever wanting to go on disability you do what you have to do. There were nights where working my way through school in loud bars where they had live heavy metal bands I found myself many times in the bathrooms throwing up just to turn around to go back out onto the floor again. It does help if you have a Dr. who cares enough to take you seriously and will work with you on medications especially those made for pain, even though most of these medications just take the edge off so you can function. There is usually some type of trigger to get one going whether it be low pressure systems, hormones, allergic reactions certain foods to name a few. I read that Jukka was suffering with severe insomnia, which is why he had to quit drumming for Nightwish is a huge trigger for migraines. So speaking as someone who made it through all the nights of bartending/cocktailing and finishing school with a MSN (Master of Science in Nursing) while being diagnosed with chronic severe migraines I know it is possible to push your way through the pain and take care of business…especially when others are counting on you. Is it easy? No, it has been one of the most difficult things I have ever had to endure in my life and I know there are some people that can’t or don’t know how to get themselves through a bad migraine, we are all different. I can see Jukka as someone who would not let migraines or insomnia have so much power over his life, he would not give up on the things he loves the most…like Nightwish and that is probably why even though he could no longer endure drumming for them he still works for them as a manager.

In "The Siren" Marko is the lead singer and Tarja is more of a background singer. Even if not so many solo/leading roles, he has a big role in the band's vocals.

Yes, Marko have a great voice. For more of that you should hear their version of Phantom of the opera, with their first female lead singer, Tarja. Best version of Phantom of the opera... Also Marko sings in While Your Lips Are Still Red (Live at Wembley Arena), here you can also hear Troy Donockley with a guitar solo played with an EBow. (I would love to see your comments about those songs) Other great songs with Marko is The Islander (Live at Tampere). Then he sings together with Floor in Yours Is An Empty Hope - Live. Here you can also hear Floor growl. There are more songs he participate in, but the last song I will mention is the masterpiece The Poet And The Pendulum (OFFICIAL LIVE) where he also sings with Floor. Now this song is emotional for the Nightwish fans, Nightwish and Toumas in particular, since it is about Toumas feelings after they parted with their first female lead singer, Tarja. I believe I read that Toumas have said that he commits suicide in that song, so that he did not have to do it in real life. Therefore it is recommended to read about this story first. But that mentioned, the song is a masterpiece no matter if you know about the story behind it or not. You should not miss this song. It is considered one of the BIG Nightwish songs, together with Ghost Love Score and Greatest Show On Earth.

I was specifically waiting for YOUR reaction to this song. There's no doubt Pink Floyd is top shelf, and this, a great song. David Gilmour is actually a fan of this version, this tribute. Marko Hietala is a fantastic vocalist... singing w Nightwish, he is very restrained. With the band, his solo vocal songs are While Your Lips Are Still Red (live at Wembley), The Islander, live at Tampere, Phantom of the Opera, live End Of An Era 2005 (w Tarja), and Endlessness (lyric video). Now if you want to hear him SING...check out his 1st band, Tarot, song, Tides (live, Undead Indeed) is very good! And I recommend seeing him with The Northern Kings, song, Take On Me (yes, a.cover of the 80s pop song by Ah-Hah!). Emppu does not do flashy shredding. He is confident and capable, and he lays down exactly what the song needs. Great tapping technique and king of the Whammy bar!

I do consider David to be one of the best guitarist's in the world, and their songs are masterpieces. But, after hearing both versions, I prefer the Nightwish version. I'm sure other commenters have told you why the entire band was so emotional that night. It was very sad for them to be letting go of their original singer, someone the founding members had gone to school with. Also, I've heard that Jukka (the drummer) had a nasty headache. But, true professionals that they are, they still played the whole show with integrity and class. Thank you for taking the time to react to this.

I am one that liked the NW cover better than the original, even after seeing and hearing it performed live in the mid 90s. I won't deny the Gilmour lap steel solo hits a bit harder than Emppu's, but DAYUM, Emppu killed his own solo! He did well by not trying to mimic Gilmour, but to apply his own interpretation in his own style. But following Gilmour is a tough task, given he's regarded as one of the best of an era. My hat is off to Emppu for his worthy solo. My main preference for this rendition is purely on Marko's vocals. He gives me a feel for how the song would have been sung pre-breakup...with Gilmour handling the lower register, smoother melodic parts, and then Waters singing the higher chorus with his more shrill voice, "The grass was greener..." etc (think of how he sings the high parts in Hey You...) Here's the crux my argument that this is a better version though. The power of Marko's vocals is greater than either Gilmour or Waters is even capable of. It's not even close. Though Rogers could hit the high notes, he couldn't add the classical vibrato Marko brings, and to me, that's a total game changer. And Nightwish just added an edge to the song that I found more appealing than the purely melancholy tone PF created the song with. In the end, it's all a matter of opinion though, and you are certainly entitled to yours, which I will respect. :)

Awesome reaction, learned quite a few things..thank you again! And I always thought (assumed) they did that with the keyboard so they don't bump into the keys of the wrong keyboard especially when headbanging and so on.
@JWSoundworks23 жыл бұрын
I guess that could be the reason for it! You've got me wondering now. Although, I reckon it'd probably be more difficult to play it angled so not sure if it would help! Thanks for the kind comments, man. Appreciate it!

@@JWSoundworks2 The playing definitely is a good point, but with most keyboard players I know that do this, it is not their dominant keyboard and more the ones at the side and under the main one. Players like Joost from Ayreon, who also use loads of keyboards and is more calm in playing have them all set straight. (And I know from Kai that Tuomas is known to hit switches etc by accident and that they must improvise to his sudden change to "church organ" or so).
@JWSoundworks23 жыл бұрын
@@ARetiredPirate Yeah, what you're saying would make sense! I used to play with a 3 keyboard setup on stage with a cover band but I never headbanged, so the thought never occurred to me to do that (the stuff I was playing wasn't that exciting!) lol.
@ARetiredPirate3 жыл бұрын
@@JWSoundworks2 like I said, I am not sure about this and I hope that someone will correct me if I am wrong. It can also be this way because it isn't the dominant but more the support/rhythm ones that it is easier (faster) to play this way for a few keys and go back to the main(s). Anyway, keep up the great work in playing and also with the reactions...don't change a thing please! If need any help in picking songs that are worth it, don't hesitate to kick my chair....

Very Pink Floyd, very Nightwish, really good cover imo that honoured the original. Edit, and yes, David Gilmour is David Gilmour and can pour emotion through his guitar like noone else, still, I really listen to this or original based on how I feel, because both are very good albeit different.. Gilmour has the emotion but I do not think I heard double bass and march in the original. :)

As I understood it, David Gilmour liked this NW version so much that he either has it put on the official PF site or his personal Instagram; I've heard both mentioned.

@gredulous24443 жыл бұрын
It's not cover it's actually tribute (..and Night Wish call it tribute, not me). If I undestand it correctly then isn't the difference between a tribute and a cover that the cover is meant to sound as much like the original song as possible and the tribute gives artistic freedoms to make completely different kind of song, as long as the song is executed with good taste and respect? For most hardcore fans of some band, it’s probably very offensive that anyone even tries to make a cover or tribute version to any song of their favorite band, so they rate those versions 0/10 even before they even hear the song. But is it really a good idea to judge anything at all with that attitude?

I like the original for the obvious reasons. Unfortunately, what makes it such a good song does not make ones of those sings that you can just throw into a playlist and listen to at random; I mean you can, but it can be too much of a contrast to the songs that follow or precede it, and it sometimes takes away from the vibe. Or maybe it's just one of those songs that you have to be in the mood for. Either way that is why the Nightwish version gets a bit of a nod from me - it's more of a everyday listen. I do like and listen to both though
