What I imagined while listening: The movie is based in an alternate universe where Nightmare Moon considered the elements of harmony and hid them from Celestia before her rebellion and then used a spell to seal her in the sun where her light would never shine again. Equestria learns to carry on without the sun or Celestia, and Nightmare Moon ensures future generations forget there was ever another princess... That is, until Celestia manages to break free. After about 1,000 years of imprisonment, she burns hotter than the sun, melting her chains and waking from her sleep. For the first time in a thousand years, the sun raises and ponies all over equestria leave their homes to stare at the sky in amazement. Nightmare Moon paces around her room trying to think of how it could be possible another being had enough power to raise the sun, until she feels a radiating heat behind her. As she turns around, she sees her sister landing on the balcony. Years of being sealed in the sun has turned her flowing mane into pure burning fire, and her eyes burn with hatred and sorrow. Ponies gather around to behold the sight of Celestia... Although most do not remember her legacy, and although her mane no longer flows soft inviting colors, they look upon her with great admiration. She is beautiful. Her sunlight is warm and comforting. They bask in her glory... And this only infuriates Nightmare Moon, witnessing her sister be adored more than her all over again just like always. The only difference is that Celestia now has the higher ground in terms of power...

That reminds me of a Solar Flare au animatic I saw. Except in it it was a reversal of what happened in the show, with Celestia being corrupted and Luna having to banish her. Only during the trip to the sun the corruption left Celestia after convinceing her Luna hated her. So when Celestia returned she was hell bent on vengence after burning alive in the sun for 1000 years.
