There is a glitch that allows Pokémon to be put to sleep if they are recharging from Hyper Beam, even if they are already status'd. The cherry on top is, that the sleep move cannot even miss if those circumstances are fulfilled. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmOkmHSahtysfas Why the AI would even attempt to Lovely Kiss is another mystery.

BadCandyStudios in Gen 1, there is a glitch where if a Pokémon is recharging from using Hyper Beam, their current status condition can be overwritten by another one and gain that new status condition. Since Werster didn't kill Jynx with Hyper Beam, Aerodactyl had to recharge, and then Jynx used Lovely Kiss, which overwrites the toxic poison he had, and puts him to sleep, effectively guaranteeing Aerodactyl's death to ice beam the following turn

Well you could have let the Aerodactyl die but I'm not sure if Arcanine would be faster then Jynx and if Extremespeed was introduced yet in Gen1. I'm just assuming you didn't want to waste any time and wanted to switch out since Aerodactyl doesn't die to one Ice beam. P.S: That status change was interesting to see and I had no idea Gen1 had some weird rule to change status's like that.

To be fair, that's kind of on him. Even if he did get fucked by all the ranges and hacks, the time loss of letting Aerodactyl die to have a safe switch to Arcanine is pretty insignificant compared to the risk of Arcanine switching in on an ice beam and getting frozen, which is what happened. (For those who don't know, if you get frozen in gen 1, you cannot thaw out unless you get hit with a fire-type move which Jynx obviously doesn't have so Arcanine was useless now. Combined with the fact Aerodactyl was asleep and would get one-shot by ice beam, that switch meant a 10% chance at a guaranteed loss.)
