@@DenariusHaveNarius in the book, he was the one most like the Don only nobody except the Don knew it. In reverse, Michael was the only one who truly understood the Don. That is why their relationship was always stormy and why Michael was the one he didn’t want to go into the family business. Michael was quiet because Sonny was loud. Everyone thought Michael was the weakest brother. Effeminate. That’s why he was so quiet and calculating. The opposite of both sunny (who was loud and fierce) and Fredo (who was big and hulking in the book).

@@DenariusHaveNariusSometimes intelligence can look like psychopathic traits especially when you grow up in an environment where violence is common place and you are always under threat. It makes you detached and calculating because that’s best for survival. I know this because I grew up exactly like that. I was misdiagnosed as having psychopathic tendencies until I got a good therapist who gave me an IQ test and we worked on all the damage. It turns out I was a highly intelligent kid in a really bad place who became detached and calculatingly violent as a means of survival. Fast forward and now I’m a big softie.

I second that. This is a tricky movie with an often-confusing narrative and a LOT of people fail to catch the gist of conversations or actions on the first watch, but not these two! People are often left wondering what the whole Hagan-Pantangeli conversation was saying, because it's all subtextual. They were onto the real meaning immediately. I appreciate that sort of attention and THINKING as you watch. Movies too often try to get the audience to suspend thought--just watch and go WOW. This was refreshing.

Vito figured out that Fanucci was a fraud. He was no gangster. There's a deleted scene where Vito sees 3 teenage boys jump Fanucci and slash his throat, only to never have his gang come into the neighborhood to collect for him and dispose of the 3 teenagers who stabbed Fanucci. A real mafioso would've been avenged by his gang if he was attacked. Vito tested him in the cafe by seeing if he would take the $100 instead of $200 when Fanucci wanted a piece. Vito grew up in Sicily and lost his entire family to the mafia; he knows exactly how they operate. A real mafioso would not have accepted the $100. A real mafioso would've been insulted, beat the shit out of Vito, and ordered him to bring him $400 within 24 hours to make up for the disrespect he showed him by not bringing him the full $200 he originally demanded. When Fanucci accepted the $100, Vito had his answer: This guy is just a fake. Fanucci didn't belong to a gang. He was just a con man exploiting Italians' collective fears of the mafia, which they'd fled to America to escape. Vito now knew he could kill Fanucci without fear of retribution, and he knew it needed to be done because Fanucci was only preying on other poor Italians in the neighborhood. Something Vito wanted to correct after seeing him extort the struggling theater owner backstage with Genco

Speaking of the deleted scenes, my first experience of the trilogy was a VHS box set I bought, which told the story chronologically and included many of the deleted scenes (including Fanucci's neck injury). You both were spot on about Michael. Literally cold as a fish, heartless. Terrible Don, that’s what everyone thought Sonny would be, reckless and dangerous. You can’t be like that. But at least Sonny had a heart, Michael didn’t. Everyone feared Michael, but nobody loved or respected him, hence him being all alone at the end. Vito would be ashamed, because yes people feared Vito but everyone loved and respected Vito, even his enemies did. Vito only killed when necessary and would never kill his own family or hit his wife. It’s truly a shame Michael didn’t inherit more of his father’s traits.

@@ppuh6tfrz646 Successful? Hardly. Part of being successful is not being reckless. He Corleone family was never as powerful under Michael despite not having threats. He alienated everyone, why would anyone want to do business with such a cold, ruthless man? And a successful Don is respected by everyone, and it starts at home. A successful Don has a successful family. That’s all part of being a Don too, it’s not just about power, it’s respect. Nobody respected Michael and rightfully so. Just as an example, look how cold he was to Tom, who was more loyal to his father than anyone, “you’re out Tom”. So cold, people even in your own family will never step up and have your back if you’re ever helpless like everyone did for his father after Vito was shot. That’s also part of being a successful Don, if God forbid something happens to you, do you have support around you and under you? Michael being alone shows exactly how much support he has, and it’s his own doing. And don’t give me he was wronged, yes to a point he was, but he was a terrible husband to Kay, who I feel he never really loved. He simply just needed a wife and she fit the bill. He never even had the decency to tell Kay about Appolonia, who was the only person he ever seemed to truly love. Michael became a different person after she was blown up, the best part of him died along with Appolonia.

When young Vito came back for Don Ciccio, one of their friends (the one who introduce him) was Tomassino. Tomassino, much older obviously, helped Michael in Italy when he killed the police officer and Sollozo. If you remember, Tomassino walked always with a cane due to a limp. That limp was produced because of the shot on the knee when he was young, in that moment when Vito murdered Ciccio.

Thanks Ladies - One thing think is worth remembering when you mentioned after killing Don Fanucci that Vito went from kind of a "normal" life to gangster. His whole history is as an orphan who's family was killed by similar men and violence was a tool. He is unemotional and business-like, because he knows this is how it's done with people like this. It wasn't a heated reaction, it was methodical and calculated. The hit needed to look like a professional job, to make people think it was a competitor or other to throw people off and to make Clemenza fall in line. There was no future for Vito with Don Fanucci there and it was just like Sicily - If Vito didn't want to live under Fanucci's rule, it's an easy decision - It's just business...

If I'm correctly interpreting the attack on Frank (which can be disputed), Roth certainly ordered his associates to attack Frank and to tell him that it was Michael who ordered the hit, but Roth never intended to actually kill Frank - otherwise why mislead him into thinking Michael was behind the attack? I think Roth intended to stage either a rescue or some other way of making the hit fail, so that Frank would think Michael had betrayed him and would go over to Roth's side. What Roth couldn't foresee was the fortuitous arrival of the policeman just in time to save Frank, leaving Frank convinced that Michael had become his enemy, but making his new alliance now not with Roth but with the authorities, and offering to testify against Michael, which he would surely never otherwise have done. Do you think that's right?

Thanx Michael didn't want to go into the biz, but once he was kind of forced to by circumstances presented in the first movie, he completely lost his soul... I think Michael was in love with his Italian bride, but when she was murdered in the car bombing he just settled for Kay to be mother of his children. He lied incessantly to her, manipulated her, and when she "killed" one of his sons, he just washed his hands of her.

You have to consider the circumstances in Michaels life prior. Assassination attempt on his father. Other family members are either stupid or weak. If he don't do anything the enemies will end the family. So he didn't really had a choice. And after that they killed his brother, killed his wife, his sister hated him for killing the guy that set up Sonny, his other brother betrayed him, his wife hated him and got rid of his child. All this combined and there is no wonder that he slowly faded away in emotionless man. It is a defensive mechanism.

Roth is smart enough to know that Hyman Roth suspects that Michael knows he did it and wants to confuse Pantangali (who's not as clever as either one into turning on Michael.

Michael has a superior intelligence and Vito wished he could harness it so that he would become powerful in the "legitimate" world. During one of their last conversations with his father, Vito tells his son that "there wasn't enough time" as he knew much more work was to be done to prepare Michael. Michael has a lot of heart but his cold logic and intelligence always take over when his heart is broken - it is a matter of survival. On many instances, one can see that Michael is deeply hurt. In the Godfather 1, he is hurt by Fredo who takes sides against the family when he supports Moe Green; his way of dealing with it not to be hurt again is a cold threat: "Fredo, you are my older brother and I love you, but don't ever take sides against the family again". He loves his brother and tells him. The warning shows that he would not be able to bear being hurt again by Fredo given he is one of the closest and dearest person around him. See also in Cuba during the show how Michael's face turns sad in complete shock when he clearly understands that Fredo lied to him when he says that he knows Johnny Ola, while a few hours before he said he had never met him. Michael connects the dots quickly and understands that Fredo was instrumental in the attempt of murder. Add to that that Michael went through the savagery of WW2, saw his father victim of an attempt of murder on the verge of death, saw his wife Apolonia die in a car explosion aiming at killing him, and many other dramatic events, including in the end the abortion. Kay showed him that there was no taboo killing the most precious being: an innocent unborn baby, his son in this instance. That really ruined him. Apolonia was the kind of wife that Michael needed in his life to maintain balance while trying to get out of the mob life; instead he got Kay always pressuring him to get out when the task was nearly impossible. Michael was always caught between a rock and a hard place. Only his high intelligence allowed him not to crumble.

Nonsense. Michael Corleone is in many ways a sympathetic figure, but he wasn’t the loving man moved by necessity to do evil that you paint him here, not even in the book still less the films. In the film, his reaction to Fredo’s speaking up for Moe Green certainly didn’t appear to be emotionally hurt, rather it was coldly angry. In the films, he knowingly lied to Kay right from the start-he had no intention of seriously committing to legitimacy, and Kay had little if any basis for understanding how difficult that would be. To say nothing of how profoundly he lied to Kay about Appolonia…and that first marriage was one based *entirely* on passion and lust. Perhaps it could have become a partnership, but she was murdered before that could happen. In the book, Michael was truly an outsider to the Mafia. He made a choice to enter that world, to stand with his family. An understandable choice, but one he made eyes open. From that point on, he never made any significant effort to divest himself.

You two are very insightful about the Michael story. Michael is cold-blooded. Like his father, he’s very intelligent and discerning. But he lacks the warmth of his father Vito. The two parallel stories are even shot differently-the Vito story is visually warm. The Michael story is cold.

@@mattlawrence1932 Don Vito ruled with fear as well. But this is an interesting point that you argue. I don’t know if respect is the right word. I agree its part of Vito Corleone’s character. There’s this thing called “the favor economy”, and Vito was a master of it. The first movie starts off with it, does it not? Two supplicants ask the Godfather for favors. For the favor economy to work, there has to be respect and trust, backed up by fear. Michael works with a different model-loyalty is bought. With few exceptions, he can’t really trust the men working for him.

When you get to Part III, only watch the version titled "The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone" since it presents itself not as a sequel to The Godfather and The Godfather Part II but instead as an epilogue to a two part story the way Puzo and Coppola intended. See it and judge for yourself.

When you watch the next Godfather, please watch Godfather Coda. It is the improved Godfather III. The director, Francis Ford Coppola, made some changes in response to poor reviews by the critics and renamed it The Godfather CODA. Watch it, please. You will want to see what happens to everyone from Godfather II, even though it is not a classic like the first two were. It will answer questions you might have.

Vito actually orchestrated the death of the five families in the first film not Michael!!!! Michael just carred it out so Vito didn't have to break his oath to the other families thats why Vito stepped down from the throne & told Michael to wait till after he died so it would never tarnish his fathers name!!!! Also Y'all said that Michael is his father & brothers combined but its actually the complete other way around 💯 Each of the three sons has a different part of they're father in them but not the rest : *Sonny* has his fathers anger & violent temper *Fredo* has his fathers loving & understanding side & *Michael* has his fathers cunningness & patience Non of the three sons have everything that they're father had in spades & thats why everything went down in the end the way it did because all three sons lacked one or two parts of they're father in them💯👌 *Vito* ruled by respect & died with his family intact *Sonny* ruled by both respect & fear & that's why his power left the family broken & he got killed *Fredo* was too sensitive to rule by respect or fear & that's what ultimately got him killed *Michael* ruled by only fear because the lack of respect every one gave him in the beginning & he completely shattered the entire family with his power & that's why he lost everything in the end

Michael brought Frank’s brother, who is a boss in Italy. They knew Frank couldn’t betray the code of silence in front of his brother. That, or he feared they would’ve killed his brother. Also, in the Run the Jewels song “Legend has it” Killer Mike references both Godfather 1 and 2. “Your life can end like in Godfather 1. You get the gun as I christen my son” as well, “Mike in the jelly, won't snitch. I'll rent a room at the Ritz. I'll sip a fifth of the whisk. I'll smoke a dub in the tub. Then I will split both my wrists.”

I don't blame Michael for the way he was towards Kay. What she did, and why she did it and how she told him was disgusting. I couldn't stand her. Michael's brother had a hand in the assassination. I'm not saying he should kill him, I'm saying Fredo brought it on himself. This is the Mob. And that's how it was in this movie. It's not for us to understand because we dont think that way. I agree Michael doesn't have the warmth his Father did. But then again the bosses of the families tried to kill his Dad and Killed Sonny. And tried to kill him. Amd you have to be a certain type of person to be in the Mob. And I feel Michael had a heart that was hardened with time. Which is a shame and tragic. And tragic for all around him. As a Sicilian-American who was brought up in the Bronx, I can tell you that both this film and the earlier Godfather were both very believable. My family came up from the same Little Italy on the Lower East Side that so many Italian immigrants lived in like the Corleones. In fact, my grandfather was born in a town just a few miles away from Corleone--and that is what Sicily looked like.

Jyn and Ryl, you are judging Michael on some very difficult situations and choices that he has to make. -------- On the one hand it's wrong that Michael hit Kate but on the other hand she had an abortion without his knowledge or consulting him. ------ Fredo is complicit in trying to have Michael and his family killed yet Michael has no justification to kill his brother. ------ God forbid someone in your family tries to kill you, what would you think of them or try to do to them. ------ That's the true genius of the Godfather saga, in a normal family mistakes don't get you killed but as a member of the Corleone family they do and it forces you to make very difficult decision that test one's morality. -------- Hopefully, these are decision we will never have to make.
