~For JZX90s, be mindful of sizing when selecting your sub for this project
~Depth size of the Image Dynamics IDQ12 used in the video is 5.91" and it had just enough clearance with the rear glass angle
~The IDQ12's outside diameter is 316.40mm (12.46 in). The larger the diameter the closer the mounting screws will be to the rear glass

~I used Great Stuff foam. Just make sure you get the closed cell variant. The cells are pressed together so air and moisture can't get inside the foam unlike open cell which is flexible and soft
~Because so much air is moving you won't hear an audible difference if it's not 100% sealed but you want to separate the front from the rear as much as you can. When the front waves cancels out the back waves, speaker loading goes down as does SPL output
~Reinforcing/bracing the rear deck is generally done to prevent flex which is another killer of SPL output

Bruh... considering what tools you had, how tight that space is, how big that subwoofer and did I mention how tight that space is 👀, you did good bro! I did all my own shit and I've been down similar rabbit holes 😂. 👍🏽👍🏽

Good job sir. Im sure it sounds good. I think this is what's called an infinite baffle setup.

So this doesn't require a box correct?

Nice inspiring video. You could also have bought or made a subwoofer box and placed it in the trunk and just have an open hole in the rear deck for the bass sound to come up through. Ofcourse make a frame for the hole in the rear deck so it looks nice.

The whole point of building it this way is the trunk becomes the box

Nice job. How do you compare the amount of bass you get with this infinite baffle setup versus having one 12 inch sub in a sealed box?

Nothing beats infinite baffle. Don't fall for car audio places that only build boxes they are Nothing but rattle machines. This is a trunk IB but if you make the subs true IB you'll notice a huge difference as well as everyone else around your car using lower power.

Kenny my dude! Did you notice a pretty big difference in sound quality sealing the MDF with foam? The sub I threw in the factory location sounds super “meh” currently lol

Hard to say since just going from 8" to a 12" is a substantial difference in bass. Cone area is king in these types of setups but generally you want to seal the front from the back as much as you can before deciding you need to upgrade. The original 8" sounded crisp and clean but the 12" out performs it in both sound pressure level and sound quality

Do you like the idq in the rear deck? How many watts are you putting to it? Does it ever bottom out? Do you feel the bass and would you rather of bought an idmax or is the idq still that much better than your old 8” with better quality sound.
@JZXKenny
@JZXKenny Жыл бұрын
I love the idq! I did look at the idmax but the dimensions would've been nearly impossible to fit. The idq 12" just barely clears the angle of the glass when mounting. It's worlds better than the 8" I originally had. I'm currently running 350w RMS at 4 ohms on a Pioneer GM-9605 5 channel amp

@@JZXKenny isn’t the idq12 like 750 watts RMS? aren’t you heavily underpowering it?
@JZXKenny
@JZXKenny Жыл бұрын
@@Hunter-pk7ym that's for the 2ohm configuration, I have the 4ohm which is rated at 500rms

So you don’t have an amp for the sub? Just connected it to og wires?
@JZXKenny
@JZXKenny 2 жыл бұрын
There’s an aftermarket one under the passenger seat. This video is just showing that you can fit a 12 on the rear deck. I have another video on my channel that briefly covers the amp install when I first installed an 8”.

I did this in my Lexus IS with an 8" JL sub and it doesnt sound good at all. Rear deck Sub swap. Even got the Infinity Kappa Sub. To see if any difference. (Using an Alpine 500W Mono amp to run it). It still sounds horrible. Do you think the MDF is the make or break here? help? I used putty to avoid air leaks and rattle but the trunk just rattles... 🤦‍♂️ Did the exact same thing in my older Lexus GS430 with a 10" JL Free Air sub and it hit hard and clean. (Rear deck)

The mdf definitely helps in this case. The insulating foam is also closed cell so air can't escape. Goal is to seal off the trunk from the cabin as much as you can. otherwise the frequencies are bouncing back and canceling

Jeez if you had a simple Jigsaw you couldnt saved so much effort on the sub cutout hole, dont need a router for that

I did this about twenty years ago in my seventy seven cutlass Except I put two 12 in subwoofers And two 6×9s Had to put in about an inch and a 1/2 or 2 inches of wood. So My spare tire would still fit in the factory location underneath the speakers Then I added another half inch piece of plywould paint it and cover it with speaker Grill material so you couldn't see the speakers at all Also had to cover the bottom of the 6×9s With boxes so the subs would not blow them out
