Although a large ported box with a low tuning will sound similar with extra headroom in the bass extension, or just adding a pipe that treats the trunk as a slightly leaky ported box and have a 15Hz tuning. The low resonance won't cost you output up higher either compared to the same infinite baffle. Whilst you can use your trunk space, it will restrict the sound a bit.

Considering how friggin huge even the smallest sealed box is for these drivers, I'm not surprised at all this worked so good. I've done this before WAYYYYYY back and usually had really good results. You are basically using your trunk as a big sealed enclosure. The better you seal around the edges of the baffle. The louder it got. Double or tripling up on the baffle and counter sinking them will help in SQ. From what I've found is that an infinite baffle requires a ton of space to unload from. It may be worth testing a single 18 centered with space on both sides. If you could then move it back and forth in the trunk to help get a desired tuning. But then it would be basically free air. It's more practical to design in vans and SUVs.

@@666Necropsy The first time I tested a dipole sub with some super crappy 12" in a small room, I was instantly amazed because of the details. Even though the sub was totally busted. I kept thinking about it and ultimately got a car that had a trunk that was almost like made for having a sub in the middle. Did an install with good 12" sub and fell in love about the idea where there is no enclosures (for the bass at least). Then after years I got two 18" Electro-Voice DL18MT's, old 90's PA subs for cheap and just fitted them on a big board. I tested them outside, as I'd been dreaming of a sub bass capable small(ish) PA -system that doesn't make the neighbours or anyone living nearby mad (even at like multiple miles away). Nowadays I myself pretty much hate the overly high SPL -oriented cars blasting some single note bass songs nearby. So I can imagine how it would feel waking up or noticing a bumping bass when you're going to sleep that just keeps on playing forever (in your usual forest raves, from 10pm to like 6am+). For example one time we had just one simple big Peavey 2x18" PA sub enclosure and in the beginning of the night a few of my friends went close to the nearest house, more than a mile away (which also was behind a small hill) to check if the bass carries to there and when they got out of the car to listen, they said it sounded like there had been a party going in the nearby house. I've tested the two 18" in a large wooden building and they went nicely down to 20 something Hz. One time I took them to a DJ gig in a really old bar in a wooden building. There I had some problems with uneven bass as I didn't have enough time to EQ the system. I also had a pair of 15" "modern" car subs and they too sounded great outside WITHOUT an enclosure. And I bet the bass couldn't be heard after like 50 meters or so, but the first 10-20 were very nice. Inside an aparment they would shake the floor with Indigo Children (JLE Dub). When I had the system in my car, I noticed that on the outside, the bass seemed to attenuate on the sides of the car, which makes sense as it worked kinda like a dipole. So I think one can blast their music much louder with a free air/infinite baffle sub system than they can with any enclosure without messing with the people around.
@xguy7577 Жыл бұрын
Yo man, I really like all you do. This build brings some ideas to mind. I think a double baffle and brace could improve sturdiness. And just to protect the subs from things in the trunk; leave it open back, but add somewhat of a tunnel box only about 8 inch. Then add vibration deadening to the back side. Just some thoughts, I tinned to over think things.😅

What's even more amazing is that I can hear the SQ coming through the recording here. Yes, I have a very good sound system on my computer. Still, the clarity comes through the mic and everything. I drive an SUV so infinite baffle isn't really on the table for me, but I am envious for sure!

My first car was a 1978 Monte Carlo. This was in 1992 and I did my system like this. I removed the seat back and mounted two 15" subs in a panel that was sealed as best as possible between the cabin and trunk. Old school "surfboard" amp at 500 watts for the subs and another 250 watts for the mids,highs mounted in a nice flush mount rack right behind the the subs in the trunk. This was in high school. I did a killer upholstery job on the panel so anyone that sat in my back seat leaned against the 15's and waffle grills. The shit banged hard! My Motorola "brick" phone would bounce on the trunk lid. When I rolled up to school or a house party everyone knew I was coming. The car was also slammed with 15x8 reverse deep dish KMC spoons, fresh paint and crushed velour interior! My car would peel those reflectors off the road as I changed lanes. LOL.

The way it was explained to me by a sq guy back in the day is you want to seal every possible leak between the the cabin and the trunk in an infinite baffle so the waves from the front don’t interact with waves from the back, thicker the baffle the better…. the better the partition the better the sound and output. Pair of 18’s fill the seat hole nicely 👍
@pottsvision2607 Жыл бұрын
The sq guy was right - but you must also consider that the more cone area the more that 20cu ft or so trunk turns into a sealed box.... IB means the only back pressure is atmospheric pressure, "infinite" box size - in practical application this is, lets say, 10 cubic feet for an 8, 15 for a 12.. simply, a box so large the back pressure has little affect on the frequency response, so if the box was larger it wouldn't matter aka essentially achieve the "infinite".box/infinite baffle

It hit hard but he said he wasn't happy with its sound. I have heard 2 speakers in a box do as much as 8 in an open baffle. Good luck with everything.

you got more spl from the 5 - 6.5"s I certainly appreciate you testing this - I may consider even though the 6.5s were more impressive to me

I put that infinite baffle for the back seat of my MIG. When I fly at mach one with the sub facing me it is intense! I fly into the Bass at the speed of sound! Infinite Baffles are great with cockpits.

SQ is always my go to. SPL sometimes is just straight bass and doesnt appeal to me as much. If you get those sides sealed its pretty much perfect. Saved lots of space too.

With IB, The tradeoff from lower spl is larger bandwidth and incredible lows. Usually plays below 20hz.

This is how they use to do it back in the late 80's & 90"s. They use to bolt the board to the back plate opening or to the floor so it was locked in and tight.. Systems use to bump back in the day. Love this old school system!

I did this in a Saturn ion with two 15” kicker comps on 600W rms. It bumped real good for what it was and sounded great no matter what was playing. I had to spray foam the c pillars to seal off the cabin space. It got messy with the heat but made a huge difference.
@BudgetBassHead24 күн бұрын
I love that you sealed up the cabin. Nice work!

I did a few infinite baffle builds. I love how efficient and clean they sound. Big things to remember is cone surface are matters, either a lot of small speakers or large. Second is important your max watts on the sub will be lower.

Years back I installed a single 12" on a third gen Legacy sedan, that doesn't have flip down back seats. But it had two steel box section beams in the center and I used those to install a board with hole in the middle for the sub. I put some packing material between the board and the seat back, to reduce/eliminate resonances. The sub was installed behind the board so that there was pretty even contact between the board and the seat back foam. It played real nicely down to around 24 Hz. The Fs of the sub is claimed to be 25 Hz and it won't play much lower than that. I had about 800 W RMS for it, but I felt it would've liked more power. I do think that the restriction of air flow from the seat back creates sort of an air spring effect in front of the cone and gives the sub a bit better mechanical power handling and maybe even a bit better control... I did test it without the seat installed and it felt like I could max out the suspension. The best parts of the system were the bass notes that vibrated through the chassis of the car straight to your ass, even at lower volumes. And the fact that the sound didn't have the same kind of pressure that comes out of a ported box. It was super smooth and clear, unlike the certain "messiness" from a ported enclosure. I have super sensitive ears to sudden or radical pressure changes (mainly because of damage from an assault rifle blast), but I still like high volume, which may sound kinda odd, but with that system, I could blast it with great vibes for hours without getting fatigue on my ears, which is very common to happen with normal systems and ported subs. EDIT: And third part was that I only lost about 20mm of the height of the trunk space and the amount of a sub sticking out from the middle. I just put a pretty accurately fitting MDF board on the back, so that I can raise it up to get to the spare tire. There's plenty of room between the trunk floor (underside of the board) and the top of the spare tire. Only problem I faced was the erratic behaviour with the phase response. Not sure which component was the actual cause, but as I had the front doors playing down to around 35-40Hz, there were lots of spots where they cancelled each other out. A single track would play crazy good with such control that it was almost too good to be true (especially for the money spent) and then the next track would have pretty much nothing at certain bass frequencies. I had pretty serious DSP in it and also a DSP head unit and I tried to hone in the sub for endless hours, playing with delay and multiple phase settings (head unit 45° steps from -135° to 180°, amp 0-180° and the DSP +/-). At some point I thought I probably should make a beefier board for the sub and point it straight at the drivers head. Also the boot is not insulated in any way. Rather it's very free-air and dipole-like. That could also be the reason. Nowadays I have a bit better gear for measuring stuff so maybe I should try that. Now I have a monster SQ amp that I'm in process to get wired in. It should give 2 x 850 W in 2 ohm or 1700 W in 4 ohms bridged. I think I'd go for the 4 ohm load (2 ohm coils in series) as it should give a better damping factor.

would it not give a similar result if you just had these two in a sealed box the same cubic foot size of the trunk? just curious.

This is called a free air setup that was done a lot in the 90s generally the baffle would get sealed with great stuff, I had this same setup in 1996 with 2 12" pioneer impp on a punch 80, but you're basically using your trunk as a box as why you have a fairly low frequency, I personally like the sound even if output isn't the greatest it's smart if you want to save your trunk space.
@marcusbrown7128 Жыл бұрын
Exactly the way I would describe it. I pretty much had a similar set up 1992 in a 86 cutlass with some free air pioneer 12's powered by a autotech amp. The bass was deep, I could be heard 2 blocks away . This was old school.

Built something similar about 1990 for a NFL player. It was a SQ setup, but loud enough to satisfy his taste in music. When we were done you could put a quarter on the trunk and it would bounce three feet in the air. System had a Dennon head, audio control EQ and crossovers and a mish-mash of amps that I was never quite happy with. It sounded good, but we had some equipment failures, including some burned tweeters even though the tweeters were on a separate amplifier with electronic crossovers. It was only years later that I realized that all the burned to the point of failure tweeters were on one channel. A second channel has some burned coils but they still played. The other two tweeters, running on the same 4 channel amp never failed that I know of. We had one sub amp die horribly (replaced it with a Dennon if my memory serves). It was really good sound and other than the head unit, nothing was visible in the car. Still think about building myself something similar if I get a car but I think will last long enough to be worth the effort.

Its basically a sealed oversized box and im very suprised it works. Awesome!. Yea actually I have the EVLs 18s in a sealed box and people say im crazy for the sealed box but people also say it sounds really good and they hear me from blocks away. Mine plays every note except the lowest couple maybe. Its still plays super deep base. Sealed base is earthquake shake you base.

Oh you will enjoy that setup. Being a teenager in the 80s and 90s, I've heard some good IB setups. Some were horrible, but done properly, they can be smooth. Just wait till you get'em broke in. That bass is gonna get deeper and deeper. I had an IB setup in my bedroom using a large closet. You gotta be careful with cone excursion with that setup with that big of an amp. 8k of power on 1.2k of power handling. I enjoyed your video. ✌🏾

Sorry didn’t mean to take away from the build. It’s an awesome solution for us grown folks that like to bump but need the trunk space. Didn’t know if you knew about the wiring thing but just in case and that goes for series wiring and series/parallel as well.
