Sudha Ragunathan is a popular Carnatic vocalist, playback singer and composer. She learned Carnatic music under Dr. ML Vasanthakumari in the gurukula style. She is the only Carnatic musician who has sung in United Nations after Bharat Ratna M S Subbulakshmi. She was awarded Kalaimamani (1994) by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Padma Shri (2004) and Padma Bhushan (2015) by the Government of India.

Sir, efforts is not also necessary. If an average person goes for anything with an interest, everything is possible for them, even if they are steady and regular. 75 percent they can win in everything for (non-bramins) very easily. No other group should discourage. The beauty of nagaswaram and thavil players playing the instrument ( they are extremely exceptional ) is a great example. Even the singers mostly do not know the exact meaning of tel. and sans. Songs and knowledge on TELUGU and sanskrit. Can she, Sudha write a song one number in TELUGU or in sanskriit? Veen bantha. But I think the point (I hope) she was trying to make was that it needs training & passion to learn & understand it , so it is difficult to reach all audiences like a film song. Some ppl like Sanjay Subramanuam sing Tamil songs a lot , which makes a huge difference too, to bring everyone to listen & appreciate & hopefully learnt. Just like Western classical is different from say a pop music album & only learnt by a few. But ppl like Illayaraja have helped the cause by introducing it in film music so that everyone can get a taste of it, but now a days even the film music has become more electronic.

My God these haters go at any length. This is like comparing any employee working in a software company is a software developer. It isn’t, right? Well over the years that “kurupitta janangal” have liked the complex structure and have formed affinity groups accordingly. But that doesn’t mean it is restricted to only certain community. You have completely misunderstood her. Neither Illayaraja nor ARR are doing Carnatic music kacheris. They mearly use a certain raga to compose . Some of the best movie songs are based on carnatic ragas. But Film music does not have a rigid structure like Carnatic music. A raga is based on swarams and a combination of these swaras leads to the ragam or melody.

Even today, just see Kerala, across communities are singing carnatic music at stage level and wonderfully. Classical art in any form even western classical is difficult . Eddhulla jathi enga vandhadhu.. jesudhas learnt it.. illayaraja learnt it.. most of the teachers those days were brahmins and they did teach to eager students... but currently there is only politics.
