He had already lost the respect of his crew. Killing the mate of a disgraced Klingon. There probably couldn't be much more you could do that would sink your respect much lower. And I think people overlook one aspect of this scene. When Duras accepts the challenge, he makes a fist to be given his sword. But instead the crew member retrieves the blade and lowers it so he has to reach down to pull it from its sheath. Although I don't think there is anything technically written that considers this a sign of disrespect, but the combination of having to reach down and the look on Duras' face indicate he saw it as such. Not even worthy to be handed a weapon.

Interesting note, in Klingon culture it is traditional after a warrior is slain to look into their eyes and scream, signaling to the denizens of Sto'vo'kor that a honorable warrior is about to join their halls. It was a very specific right to challenge, which doesn't come easy, since only a direct subordinate has that authority otherwise. The fight in an official challenge cannot be delegated to another such as a bodyguard. It's a very specific Klingon law that allows for this. If Duras refused to acknowledge the challenge, Duras' subordinate would then have the right (and expectation - his next in line would kill him if he didn't) to challenge Duras for control for being a coward. Just clarifying that this isn't some kind of act of thuggery where it's an illegal fight. It's not.

This is such smart writing. Duras who had no qualms of hiring assassins to kill Worf's Cha'DIch now has been forced to defend this challenge or lose everything he has worked for due to the Ja'chuch in play cause he has lost respect from his crew which from Sins of the Father is something to be a noteworthy by Klingon law. He has no choice but to fight one on one with someone he knows is a Superior warrior. Such great use of lore

Problem #1 : Everyone knows that Duras murdered a defenseless female in cold blood, but somehow he is not accountable for anything aside from Worf dueling him. As the murder was on a Federation ship, being in a Federation prison for the rest of his life would be a greater punishment for Duras. Problem #2 : Why did K'Ehyler even let him in? And why didn't she call security? And why doesn't the Enterprise have sensors that notify sickbay and beam the patient over once anyone's lifesigns suddenly plunge? She was laying there stabbed and dying for half an hour, ON the Enterprise.
@kegginstructure
@kegginstructure 2 жыл бұрын
For problem 2, she wasn't wearing a ship's badge, which is I believe the focal point for such sensors. But the basic issue is, as always, computers do as they are told and DO NOT do as they are NOT told.
@YD-uq5fi
@YD-uq5fi 2 жыл бұрын
@@kegginstructure No. Non-starfleet civilians (such as children) on the Enterprise don't wear badges, but still can be detected in case of medical emergencies. They were also able to beam people without badges (like Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge) right onto the ship, with no badge. Plus, doesn't this very clip reveal that comm badge or not, they knew where Worf was (and that he was not on the Enterprise even though his Comm badge WAS)?

@@lostinthefuture9300 That was presumably some time ago and very many iterations of computer software/hardware changes. K'ehyler let him in because he was one of the candidates for leadership and she was the arbitrator. She was compelled to listen to him. As for why she didn't call security, it was a private meeting and she may have been too proud to ask for help.

@@malcontender6319 I heard somewhere that they’re designed to be such an odd shape because they’re a defensive weapon, and also made to be used by even a peasant way back in Kahless’ day (as it’s shape would lend well to threshing fields of whatever grain Klingons cultivate). It’s almost completely made to be able to catch blades and turn blows, exactly like Worf does, which in a way restrains a Klingon. It’s a fighting style, and a fighting weapon, made to force a Klingon to not fly into a fight blind and bloodthirsty. They have to use this unwieldy weapon, parry blows, and give themselves an opening to exploit.
